Buriram 🏛️🌋⚽
A southern Isaan province renowned for its Khmer castles, ancient volcanoes, and sports. According to provincial data from 2026, key tourist attractions include Phanom Rung, Muang Tam, and Khao Angkhan.
📍 5 Must-Visit Places
1. Phanom Rung Historical Park 🏛️ — The most important landmark in Buriram, this Hindu temple of the Shaiva sect is located on top of an extinct volcano. The temple was built and expanded in several periods, with its flourishing era around the 17th Buddhist century. It is notable for its Naga walkway, Naga bridge, and highly detailed stone carvings.
2. Muang Tam Temple 🏛️🌿 — Located approximately 8 km from Phanom Rung, this Hindu religious site is around 1,000 years old, showing influences from the Khmer Khlang and Bapuan styles. Its highlights include the group of prangs (towers), an L-shaped water basin, and stone Nagas with clearly visible details. The best places to combine a trip with Phanom Rung are:
3. Khao Kradong National Park 🌋🌳 — An extinct volcano crater near the city. At the top is Phra Suphatrabopit Temple and a viewpoint overlooking Buriram. You can walk around the crater and learn about the volcanic landscape, one of the province's unique features.
4. Chang Arena & Buriram Castle ⚽🏁 — Buriram's sports zone. Chang Arena is the home stadium of Buriram United, while Buriram Castle is located between the football stadium and Chang International Circuit. It has restaurants and walking areas, making it a good place to visit after Khao Kradong as it's in the same area.
5. Wat Khao Angkhan 🙏🌋 — A temple on an extinct volcano near the Phanom Rung route. Its highlight is the religious building which blends architectural styles from various eras and its peaceful atmosphere. A perfect stop after visiting the castles, as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has designated Wat Khao Angkhan as one of Buriram's important check-in points.
🗓️ Compact 2-day, 1-night itinerary:
DAY 1: Khao Kradong → Chang Arena → Buriram Castle → Explore the city
DAY 2: Phanom Rung → Prasat Muang Tam → Wat Khao Angkhan
If this is your first time in Buriram, the Phanom Rung + Muang Tam route is a must-see. They are close together and offer the clearest glimpse into the Khmer civilization of the area.
Buriram's charm lies in its extreme contrasts — explore a nearly thousand-year-old stone castle in the morning, climb an ancient volcano in the afternoon, and end the evening in a sports city all in one province! 🏛️🌋⚽
