Biei travel guide and discussion

Sense of place: Many travelers describe Biei as a calm, photogenic hill town of rolling fields and wide skies, often paired with nearby Furano on a relaxed day route from Sapporo or Asahikawa. The pace is unhurried and the scenery—farmland, solitary trees and distant peaks—invites slow walks and frequent photo stops. Nature icons: Blue Pond (Aoiike) and Shirahige Waterfall are repeatedly named as Biei’s signature sights, with turquoise water, standing tree trunks and, in winter, striking ice contrasts. Most visitors view Shirahige from the Blue River Bridge and combine both spots in a short, easy outing. Flower hills & scenic drives: Shikisai-no-oka draws crowds for its sweeping, rainbow-like flower bands against the Tokachidake range, and many suggest the on-site tractor tour to cover the vast grounds. Midday gets busy (parking too), so arriving at opening or near sunset improves both light and experience; a summer entry/parking fee applies. Patchwork Road vibe: A common highlight is meandering Biei’s gentle “Patchwork” hills by car or bike, where iconic lone trees and golden fields are about light and mood more than a single viewpoint. Sunrise or late-afternoon glow is frequently praised for cleaner compositions and fewer people. Season & timing: July is the nearby Furano lavender peak, while August still offers flowers (including cosmos) and comfortable, cooler weather than Japan’s main cities. In winter Biei turns into a quiet white world—bring proper layers, and if you don’t drive on snow, many recommend day tours or buses. Getting around: A typical route is JR Sapporo → Asahikawa (about 1.5 hours) → Biei (about 35 minutes), then Dohoku Bus to Blue Pond/Shirahige; the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is often suggested for multi-city hops. Self-drive offers the most flexibility around the hills, with winter driving best left to those experienced with snow tires.

Hokkaido’s most surreal photo spot, and its blue colour is all science, not photoshop — traveler post in Biei

Hokkaido’s most surreal photo spot, and its blue colour is all science, not photoshop

Blue Pond (青い池, Aoiike), one of Biei’s most photographed landmarks, sits tucked along the scenic drive through central Hokkaido, just a short 90-metre stroll from this iconic directional sign. This vivid, milky blue pond wasn’t formed naturally; it was created accidentally after a volcanic eruption, when mineral-laden groundwater mixes in the still water, producing that dreamy, otherworldly turquoise hue. The look changes dramatically depending on the weather, sunlight and season. On bright sunny days, the striking blue really pops. On cloudy or misty mornings, it can appear duller, more grey. Autumn is absolutely magical here, as the surrounding birch trees blaze with golden and burnt-orange foliage, framing the cool blue water for that viral postcard shot. Bare, half-submerged tree trunks poke out from the pond, adding the signature ethereal vibe everyone chases. It’s a quick stop, perfect for road trippers. The viewing area is easy to reach, with a gentle short walking path, no tough hiking required. There are wooden fences to keep visitors back, so you can’t walk right down to the water’s edge. It gets busy during peak autumn and summer seasons, so arrive early if you want to beat crowds and capture clean photos. A lot of people zip through Biei’s farm scenery and save this as the grand finale. It’s a short but unforgettable detour on the Furano-Biei-Asahikawa loop. Don’t expect a long activity — this one is all about the photos and that quiet, surreal atmosphere. If the light hits just right, you’ll understand exactly why this spot is Hokkaido-famous. #bieibluepond #biei #hokkaido #furano

Hokkaido First-Timer Route Builder: Sapporo + Otaru + Furano–Biei — or Go East? — traveler post in Biei

Hokkaido First-Timer Route Builder: Sapporo + Otaru + Furano–Biei — or Go East?

🧭 HOKKAIDO IS NOT ONE COMPACT DESTINATION Sapporo and Otaru form an easy western corridor. Furano–Biei requires another regional transfer and a separate local-access plan. Eastern Hokkaido is farther again—and usually deserves its own route. So the first decision should not be: “How many famous places can I fit?” It should be: STAY WEST — OR GO EAST? This guide uses full usable route days. International arrival and departure days sit outside the advertised duration. 5️⃣ 5 USABLE DAYS — STAY WEST Use Sapporo as your only accommodation base. A strong route includes: · 2–3 Sapporo days · 1 Otaru day trip · 1 flexible western day · 0 hotel changes 🚆 Otaru is usually easier as a day trip. Leave your luggage in Sapporo, use the rail corridor and return to the city’s wider dining and transport options. An Otaru overnight earns inclusion only when it supports: · a meaningful early or late activity · substantially slower local exploration · an onward western route · an accommodation-led stay Use the remaining flexible day for one clear purpose: · more Sapporo depth · a practical onsen or nature excursion · a gateway-aligned extension Do not add Furano–Biei automatically. ✅ Five days are strongest when the route stays in Western Hokkaido. 7️⃣ 7 USABLE DAYS — ADD CENTRAL HOKKAIDO A green-season route can use: Sapporo + Otaru → Asahikawa or Furano–Biei Allow: · 3 western days · 1 regional transfer · 3 central days · 2 principal accommodation bases · 1 hotel change 🌿 Central Hokkaido needs real local time. Reaching Biei or Furano Station is not the same as reaching the countryside. Local sightseeing may still require: · rail plus local connections · a current sightseeing bus · an organised tour · taxi · suitable-season self-drive 🏨 ASAHIKAWA OR FURANO? Choose ASAHIKAWA for easier operations. It is generally stronger for: · non-drivers · rail and airport access · broader accommodation supply · dining · late arrivals Choose FURANO for proximity. It may be stronger for: · suitable green-season self-drivers · earlier countryside starts · rural immersion · resort-led stays Check the exact Furano property carefully. Furano Station, the town centre, Kitanomine and resort areas do not have identical access, shuttles, parking or dining. ✈️ Returning to New Chitose Airport inside the same seven usable days normally costs one central day. A CTS–AKJ open jaw may protect more local time—but only when current flights and ground links support the complete journey. ❄️ 7 WINTER DAYS — REBUILD THE ROUTE Do not reuse the green-season road plan and simply replace flowers with snow. Keep: · Sapporo · Otaru · 1 weather-flex day Before adding another base, verify the full transport chain: · Can you reach the hotel with luggage? · Can you move locally without a weak seasonal link? · Can you reach the final airport safely? When the chain is weak, remain Sapporo-based or use organised transport. For travellers without meaningful snow- and ice-driving experience, the stronger default is: · rail · airport bus · current sightseeing bus · organised tour · private transfer where justified ⚠️ A valid licence confirms legal eligibility. It does not confirm winter-driving competence. 9️⃣ 9 USABLE DAYS — CHOOSE ONE ROUTE PHILOSOPHY Nine days do not make the whole island compact. Choose either: 1. Deeper Western and Central Hokkaido 2. One focused Eastern Hokkaido corridor 🌾 OPTION A — DEEPER WEST AND CENTRAL Use two principal bases: · Sapporo · Asahikawa or Furano Give Biei and Furano their own time instead of turning them into one rushed checklist. Protect one day for: · weather · a seasonal activity · slower countryside touring · the final airport A third base should be added only when it earns at least two nights and creates a genuinely distinct experience. Tomamu should not become a compulsory connector. ✅ More days should reduce pressure—not create more checkouts. 🏞️ OPTION B — KUSHIRO, LAKE AKAN AND THE EASTERN LAKES Use two bases by default: · Kushiro · Lake Akan Kushiro works as the airport and rail gateway and provides access to Kushiro Marsh. Lake Akan provides: · an onsen stay · lake atmosphere · slower inland time · a stronger base for eastern touring Add another base around Mashu or Kussharo only when: · the northern lakes are a principal priority · the extra stay receives at least two nights · it meaningfully reduces backtracking Do not build a chain of one-night eastern hotels. Keep one touring day movable because road, weather and sightseeing conditions can change. 🌊 OPTION C — ABASHIRI AND SHIRETOKO Use: · Abashiri for airport and transport access · Utoro for Shiretoko When Shiretoko is the priority, use at least 3 nights in Utoro. That normally protects: · arrival · 2 full local days · departure Keep one local day movable for: · weather · changed park access · cancelled nature activities · poor visibility · safety restrictions Shiretoko should not be treated as an effortless Abashiri day trip. 🧩 CAN BOTH EASTERN CORRIDORS FIT? 10 usable days are the advanced minimum for serious consideration. Even then, the route requires: · selective omissions · suitable transport · practical airport direction · fewer one-night stays · weather resilience 11 or more days are stronger for combining: · Shiretoko · Mashu and Kussharo · Lake Akan · Kushiro Ten days make the wider route more possible. They do not automatically make it relaxed. 🚆 RAIL, TOUR, CAR OR DOMESTIC FLIGHT? Hokkaido is not one rail trip or one road trip. Use RAIL for major corridors such as: · New Chitose Airport–Sapporo · Sapporo–Otaru · Sapporo–Asahikawa Use ORGANISED TRANSPORT or SELECTIVE SELF-DRIVE for dispersed areas such as: · Furano–Biei · the eastern lakes · nature access beyond the main gateway ✈️ Compare flight and rail hotel to hotel. A short domestic flight still includes: · airport access · check-in · baggage · ground transport · rental-car collection where required · hotel arrival Use a domestic flight only when the complete journey protects meaningful local time. 🛫 CHOOSE THE ROUTE BEFORE THE AIRPORT WESTERN HOKKAIDO Use CTS for: · Sapporo · Otaru · western return routes CENTRAL HOKKAIDO AKJ may support Asahikawa and Biei when current flights and ground links work. SOUTHEASTERN HOKKAIDO Use KUH for: · Kushiro · Lake Akan · the southeastern lakes corridor NORTHEASTERN HOKKAIDO Use MMB for: · Abashiri · Shiretoko An eastern open jaw can help, but it does not mean flying directly between MMB and KUH. It means arriving through one gateway, travelling overland through the selected region and departing through another. Confirm: · actual flights · current ground transport · rental collection and return · one-way rental terms · operating hours · weather buffer · onward connections 🍃 THE SEASON CHANGES THE ROUTE GREEN SEASON Strongest for: · Furano–Biei · lakes · countryside · wider rural access 🍂 AUTUMN AND TRANSITION PERIODS Allow for: · shorter daylight · changing foliage · early snow · reduced seasonal access ❄️ WINTER Build around: · cities · onsen · organised transport · realistic weather recovery Flowers, foliage, snow, drift ice and wildlife are natural and seasonal. None should be guaranteed. ✅ THE SIMPLEST DECISION 5 usable days: STAY WEST Use Sapporo and Otaru. 7 usable days: ADD CENTRAL HOKKAIDO Use Sapporo plus Asahikawa or Furano–Biei. 9 usable days: GO DEEPER IN THE WEST AND CENTRE — OR CHOOSE ONE EASTERN CORRIDOR Wider eastern route: 10 days — advanced 11+ days — more resilient The best first Hokkaido trip is not the route that crosses the most of the island. It is the route that gives one region enough real time. 📌 Save this before turning Hokkaido into a transfer map. #HokkaidoTravel #HokkaidoItinerary #Sapporo #Otaru #Furano #Biei #Asahikawa #Kushiro #LakeAkan #Abashiri #Shiretoko #JapanTravel #HokkaidoRoadTrip #TripMoments #JnATravelMoments

𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙃𝙤𝙠𝙠𝙖𝙞𝙙𝙤: Farm Tomita is the trendiest flower garden right now.

I just returned from Hokkaido and wanted to share an update from this must-visit lavender garden! 🪻 Located in Nakafurano, Farm Tomita is Japan’s oldest and most iconic lavender farm, dating back to 1958. The highlight is the "Irodori no Hatake" (Rainbow Field), where vibrant rows of lavender alternate with other colorful flowers against the backdrop of Mount Tokachi. It’s breathtakingly beautiful. The peak blooming period is from late June to early August. 📍 Getting there: About a 3-hour drive from Sapporo. 🎟️ Admission: Free entry and free parking; no reservation required. 🍦 Must-try: Lavender ice cream (450 yen) and farm-fresh melon (590 yen). They are incredibly sweet and juicy—absolutely unforgettable! *Photo taken on July 1st. The flowers are currently in full bloom!

The 4 Seasons of Hokkaido: When to Go and What to Expect. — traveler post in Biei

The 4 Seasons of Hokkaido: When to Go and What to Expect.

If you are talking about year-round destinations in Japan, Hokkaido is always at the top of the list. No matter when you visit, it offers a distinctly unique charm. Spring is filled with cherry blossoms that bloom later than in other regions. Summer brings cool breezes and endless flower fields. Autumn paints the mountains in golden hues, while Winter transforms the island into a snowy wonderland many dream of. If you're wondering when is the best time to visit Hokkaido, let's explore the magic of each season so you can pick the perfect time for your travel style. 🇯🇵✨ ⸻ 🌸 Spring (April – May) The season of late-blooming cherry blossoms. While the sakura season has already ended in many Japanese cities, Hokkaido is just starting to turn pink. Famous spots like Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Shrine, and Odori Park are filled with fully bloomed cherry blossom trees. The weather is cool and breezy—perfect for a comfortable stroll without the heat. This is also a time when it's less crowded compared to winter. You can take your time exploring the city, snapping photos, or enjoying a relaxing picnic under the cherry trees. If you want to experience Japan in a vibrant atmosphere with nice, cool weather, this season is exactly what you're looking for. 🌸 Highlights · Late-blooming cherry blossoms · Cool and comfortable weather · Fewer tourists ⸻ 🌿 Summer (June – August) Escape the heat and dive into lavender fields. While the rest of Japan is sweltering, Hokkaido remains a paradise for those who love cool weather. With an average temperature of around 18–26°C, it's ideal for scenic drives, enjoying nature, and spending the whole day outdoors. The most famous landmark is Farm Tomita, home to endless fields of vibrant purple lavender. You'll also find the Blue Pond, a uniquely striking bright blue lake, and the town of Biei, featuring rolling hills, scenic roads, and picturesque countryside views. For nature lovers, summer in Hokkaido might just be the most beautiful time of the year. 💜 Highlights · Lavender fields · Colorful flower fields · Blue Pond · Scenic countryside drives ⸻ 🍁 Autumn (September – October) Nature's warmest palette. As the temperature drops, Hokkaido quickly transforms into a vibrant canvas of red, orange, and yellow. A top favorite spot is Jozankei, an onsen town nestled in a valley, surrounded by gorgeous fall foliage and a stream flowing right through the center. In Sapporo itself, Nakajima Park and the Hokkaido University campus are equally stunning spots to catch the autumn leaves. If you're after a bird's-eye view of the city, take the ropeway up Mt. Moiwa in the late afternoon. You'll get to enjoy both the autumn colors and a sweeping view of Sapporo at the same time. Wrapping up the day with a soak in a hot spring amidst the crisp, cool air makes this the season many people fall deeply in love with. 🍂 Highlights · Fall foliage · Onsen towns · Mountain views · Crisp, cool weather ⸻ ❄️ Winter (November – February) The snowy wonderland everyone dreams of. When winter arrives, Hokkaido turns into a white world covered in soft, powdery snow. The absolute showstopper is the Sapporo Snow Festival, a world-class snow sculpture event held every year. For a romantic vibe, stop by Otaru. Take a stroll along the snow-covered canal, beautifully illuminated by warm lights at night. Ski enthusiasts absolutely cannot miss Niseko, a ski resort widely recognized for having some of the highest quality powder snow in the world. And of course, soaking in an outdoor onsen in the freezing cold at Jozankei Onsen is an unmissable experience. ☃️ Highlights · Snow festivals · Skiing · Snowy towns · Onsen · Winter illuminations ⸻ ✨ So, which season is right for you? If you love flowers and vibrant vibes, choose Spring. If you want cool weather, lavender fields, and lush greenery, choose Summer. If you're captivated by the colors of fall foliage and soaking in onsens, choose Autumn. But if your ultimate dream is walking through the snow, skiing, and checking out winter festivals, then Winter in Hokkaido is what you've been waiting for. No matter which season you choose, Hokkaido has its own unique charm and guarantees a totally different experience every time you visit. It's one of the few destinations in Japan where the atmosphere completely shifts across all four seasons, making you want to go back again and again. 🍁🌸🌿❄️

It's time to visit Hokkaido! Here's how to enjoy a 2-day trip along the route!

► Equivalent to Northeast China Apart from Okinawa Island in Kyushu, most of Japan's tourist resources are concentrated in Hokkaido and Honshu. Honshu is the largest island in Japan, stretching a long distance from north to south. The well-known Kanto and Kansai regions are located on Honshu. Hokkaido is the northernmost island, with a latitude similar to Harbin and Jilin City in China. ► How to explore the route ▪ Sapporo - Furano City - Nakafurano Town - Bibaushi - Biei 1. Nakafurano "Saori no Ka" Cross a field opposite Nakafurano Station, then turn onto a small path and slowly climb up. At the end of the woods is the destination! Along the way, you'll see cute little flowers and plants grown by local residents. When you reach the lavender garden, it’s a sea of purple. 2. Tomita Farm Composed of several flower fields, the most famous being the colorful flower field, which looks like a luxurious flower carpet visible even from the moon, stretching straight toward the pine forest on the other side of the flower field! 3. Town-Run Lavender Garden In summer, this is a flower field; in winter, it becomes Nakafurano’s ski resort! The word "Nakafurano" is spelled out in flowers in the middle. ► Bibaushi and Biei Recommended route: Shikisai no Oka - Kanno Farm - Seven Star Tree - Parent-Child Tree - Northwest Hill Observatory Park - Ken & Mary Tree - Philosophy Tree - Flower Hill - Patchwork Road ► Suggested visit duration: 2-3 days ► Transportation: JR trains and buses; routes can be checked on the official website

Asahiyama Zoo

We also walked till closing time for this attraction, being our first full day in Hokkaido. The seals, penguins and polar bear were so close to us till we could see them very upclose. Not forgetting the hippo enclosure which was very unique with de waters and they seem to be enjoying swimming inside. The children’s playground was a pleasant surprise for the kids to take a break from walking. Too bad we missed the petting and feeding area.

Tree of Ken and Mary

From a distance, this tall poplar tree stands tall and independent on the vast hills of Biei, forming a typical northern landscape painting. There is also a B&B nearby that provides simple meals, and it is very pleasant to rest here on the way.

Christmas tree

A solitary Christmas tree🎄. While others may be "lonely gourmets," this one is a "lonely Christmas tree"🎄. This solitary pine tree🌲 has attracted many tourists to take photos. The sight of a single tree, standing alone, is incredibly moving, making one want to hold it close and cherish it.

Seven Stars Tree

A tall cypress tree stands on the hills of Biei, with the blue sky and white clouds around it, a natural beauty. We started our return journey from the Seven Stars Tree and took another road, which required us to pass a sharp bend. The downhill was very pleasant and the scenery was unbeatable.
