A century-old secret hot spring - Marukoma Onsen Ryokan @ Lake Shikotsu, Hokkaido — traveler post in Chitose

A century-old secret hot spring - Marukoma Onsen Ryokan @ Lake Shikotsu, Hokkaido

1⃣️Address-Sapporo, Hokkaido/Chitose Airport Suburbs, Lake Shikotsu 2⃣️Environment-5/5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Located in a corner of Lake Shikotsu, it is quiet and private, surrounded by mountains and facing the lake view 3⃣️Facilities-4/5🌟🌟🌟🌟 A century-old hotel with an antique style. It is basically complete, but you need to pay attention to dinner. 4⃣️Features-5/5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 A century-old secret hot spring, an open-air bath with a full view of the snow and lake, and a perfect Japanese flavor 5⃣️Value for money - 5/5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 $600 per person including breakfast, needless to say! 👉🏻Rating – 5/5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Lake Shikotsu is a very scenic spot near Sapporo or Chitose in Hokkaido. The famous "Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival" is held in winter, and there are also many hot spring hotels around Lake Shikotsu. The most special accommodation option is the century-old secret hot spring "Marukoma Onsen Ryokan". The word "secret" speaks for itself! The best feature is that you can sit in the "first row of lake views" in the snow and soak in the open-air nude hot spring. You will feel as if you are soaking in the hot spring together with Lake Shikotsu. It is an unparalleled enjoyment! However, Marukoma is not located in the Shikotsu Lake Onsen area, but is a 15-minute drive away. However, the hotel has a shuttle bus, and during the Shikotsu Lake Hyōto Festival, Marukoma Onsen Ryokan will also arrange a shuttle bus, so there is no need to worry too much. For me, traveling is about avoiding the crowds, going to a hot spring setting with the best view, and enjoying the vacation! At the bus stop on the Shikotsu Lake side, there will be a bus from Marukoma Onsen Ryokan to pick you up. If the schedule doesn't match, you can also ask the tourist center/enthusiastic people to call a taxi. Because Lake Shikotsu belongs to Chitose City, it is relatively close to New Chitose Airport, so you can arrange accommodation on the first or last night of your trip. Looking out from the room, you can see the unbeatable beauty of Lake Shikotsu. Be sure to choose a room on the lake side, and the price difference is less than a hundred yuan! But remember to book early, good things are scarce. If you cannot make a reservation, the restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake. In addition, you can walk out of the small door next to the hotel to the private courtyard and lake dock to enjoy the scenery. Especially in winter, you must go out to take pictures and play in the snow. The scene is so beautiful. The sight of Lake Shikotsu covered with snow in winter is so beautiful! The other side of the courtyard is actually where the open-air bath is located, but the shelter is quite good, so there is no need to worry about exposure, and basically no one comes close because the snow is too deep! As for hot spring bathing, it goes without saying that it is a must-try. The open-air bath is really in the first row of the lake view. It really feels like you are soaking in Lake Shikotsu, blending into it. It's a wonderful feeling that is hard to describe. It's like soaking in the lake and enjoying the beautiful scenery, with hot springs gushing out below, so you won't feel cold and it's safe. All the accompanying pictures were taken on-site in the winter of 2023. I am really amazed at how there can be such a great hot spring environment and such an unbeatable scenery. This trip to Hokkaido was right, and we chose such a great century-old secret hot spring Marukoma Onsen Hotel, which is definitely worth a visit! 》It should be noted that this hotel has a toilet but no separate bathroom. However, everyone takes a shower after soaking in the hot spring so it doesn’t matter haha! But you need to pay attention to dinner. Usually in winter, you may have to make dinner reservations several months in advance. If you can't make a reservation, remember to eat at the hot spring street and then take the shuttle bus back, otherwise you can only buy frozen fried rice and pizza at the hotel. But I personally tasted it and it was actually quite delicious. The hotel thoughtfully provided several microwave ovens, probably because they were afraid that everyone would have nothing to eat, haha! #Japanese Hotel #Hokkaido #Lake Shikotsu #Travel

Hokkaido in Autumn: Japan’s Red and Golden Wonderland 🍁 — traveler post in Chitose

Hokkaido in Autumn: Japan’s Red and Golden Wonderland 🍁

Hokkaido surprised me with how wild and spacious it felt compared with Japan’s busy cities. In autumn, the mountains turn shades of red, orange, and gold, while cool mountain air makes every walk feel refreshing. If you love nature and colorful scenery, this northern island deserves a place on your travel list. I’d start at Daisetsuzan National Park, one of Japan’s earliest places to see autumn colors. The mountain trails are beautiful, especially when the foliage spreads across the slopes. For an easier scenic experience, take the Asahidake Ropeway and admire the changing landscape from above. Next, head to Jozankei Onsen, where colorful forests surround the river and a relaxing hot spring feels perfect after a chilly day outdoors. Nearby, Hoheikyo Dam offers impressive views of autumn foliage reflected in the reservoir. For a different atmosphere, visit Shikotsu Toya National Park and enjoy the volcanic scenery around Lake Toya. I’d also make time for Lake Shikotsu, known for its clear water and forested shoreline, and Noboribetsu’s Jigokudani (Hell Valley), where steaming volcanic vents create a dramatic contrast with the surrounding autumn colors. My tip? Visit from late September through October, depending on the area and altitude. Pack layers, bring comfortable walking shoes, and leave room in your schedule for spontaneous photo stops. Hokkaido’s autumn landscapes are worth exploring slowly. #fallcolors #hokkaido #japan

[Hokkaido/Chitose] Japan’s Clearest Waters! A Scenic Drive and Activity Guide to the Healing Wonders of Lake Shikotsu.

Just a 40-minute drive from New Chitose Airport! I visited Lake Shikotsu, a stunning caldera lake that boasts some of the clearest water in all of Hokkaido. With its crystal-clear surface—known as "Shikotsu Blue"—and lush natural surroundings, it’s the ultimate healing destination to refresh your mind and body. 🌊 ① Scenic Views & Waterside Walks ・Yamasen Railway Bridge: This bright red bridge spanning the Chitose River offers a breathtaking contrast against the blue water and green foliage—the perfect photo spot! ・Waterside Activities: Watching people canoe and kayak on the river is mesmerizing; the water is so clear you can see right to the bottom. 🐟 ② Lake Shikotsu Visitor Center & Underwater Discovery The Lake Shikotsu Visitor Center, built with warm wooden interiors, is a fun place to learn about the area’s nature and history. In the aquarium section, you can get a close-up look at Kokanee salmon (locally called "Chip"), a specialty of the lake, as they swim gracefully! 🍦 ③ Deliciously Rich Soft-Serve Ice Cream by the Lake During my walk, I stopped for a soft-serve ice cream in a stylish black cone! Made with rich, fresh Hokkaido milk, the sweetness and creamy texture were incredible—especially enjoyed with the cool breeze coming off the lake. It was a real treat! 💡 Why You Should Visit ・Excellent access from New Chitose Airport—perfect for the start or end of your Hokkaido trip! ・Breathtakingly clear waters famously called "Shikotsu Blue." ・A full day of fun featuring nature walks, activities, a visitor center, and local treats. Be sure to add this to your Hokkaido driving itinerary!✨ 📍 Spot Info ・Name: Lake Shikotsu (Shikotsuko) ・Address: Shikotsuko Onsen, Chitose, Hokkaido ・Access: Approx. 40 mins by car from New Chitose Airport / Approx. 45 mins by bus from JR Chitose Station.

New Chitose Airport Onsen

Hokkaido is the only airport where airplanes land without sea. It's about 1/3 the size of Incheon Airport, but most of the shopping and food are on the domestic side, so if you haven't tried Hokkaido ramen while traveling, there's duty-free food. And there's also Uniqlo, but it's cheaper because of the exchange rate? It's even cheaper because it's duty-free, so it's a good idea to stop by.^^

Chitose Salmon Aquarium

The aquarium is well worth visiting. It is very large and you can see many rare tropical fish that are rarely seen. All the fish are divided into different areas. Each area has a dedicated guide and introduction. It is really an eye-opener.

Shikotsu-Tōya National Park

Shikotsu-Toya National Park is quite large. I came here in spring, and it should be more beautiful in the winter snow season. According to the introduction, Shikotsu-Toya National Park has Shikotsu Lake, Toya Lake, etc. There are Chinese brochures in the visitor center, and the circular automatic guide can also select Chinese. There are also paintings introducing various birds throughout the year. I also encountered a children's painting exhibition jointly organized by the Chitose Ministry of the Environment and Kao

Northern Horse Park

The Northland Horse Farm Theme Park is also a very interesting place. The entire horse farm is a very large space. The theme park has many parent-child projects, including some unique equestrian performances. You can watch regular equestrian performances and horse riding competitions.
