Must-see Attractions

Datong is rich in both cultural depth and historical significance, offering a range of attractions from the ancient Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery to the modern Fantawild Adventure theme park, all set against a backdrop of serene natural landscapes and historic sites.

Yungang Grottoes stand out as a monumental example of early Chinese Buddhist cave art, blending artistic traditions from across Asia. With a heritage spanning over 1,500 years, its 252 caves hold approximately 51,000 statues that showcase a range from solemn Buddhas to lively celestial figures, reflecting both the religious and cultural dynamism of the era. These grottoes not only highlight cultural syncretism but also exhibit the Northern Wei dynasty's dedication to Buddhism and its use of art to consolidate power.

The Hanging Monastery in Datong is a marvel of medieval architecture, ingeniously integrated into a cliff around 50 meters high. The temple's uniqueness lies in its structure, supported by crossbeams slotted into the rock face, which has endured for over 1,500 years. It's culturally rich, housing elements from Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism under one roof, making it an extraordinary site for both spiritual and architectural enthusiasts. Recognized for its striking position and innovative design, the temple offers visitors stunning scenery and a peek into ancient Chinese philosophies.

Datong Ancient City is celebrated for its extensive history and cultural depth. Visitors can explore monumental sites like the Nine-Dragon Wall, Drum Tower, Huayan Monastery, and Shanhua Temple. These attractions, together with the well-preserved Ming dynasty city walls, tell the story of Datong's significance as a historical and cultural center in northern China.

Hengshan Mountain is revered as a serene sacred site, offering a blend of spiritual and aesthetic experiences with its over 100 peaks and historic temples. It features the Hanging Monastery, a unique structure symbolizing cultural syncretism. This less-commercialized sacred mountain is a haven for both pilgrims and nature enthusiasts seeking introspection and scenic beauty in all four seasons.

Located in Datong's Yudong New District, Datong Fantawild Adventure is a high-tech theme park that features an "oriental magical land" and an "Asian Sci-fi Wonder". It is recognized for its innovative use of technology and interactive entertainment that integrates local culture. As the first of its kind in the Fantawild theme park series, it plays a crucial role in enhancing the cultural and technological appeal of Datong, propelling both local culture and the high-end service industry forward.

2-day autumn family trip to Datong Ancient City | Staying at Luxe Solace designer homestay

Brought the kids to Datong Ancient City for autumn break. After comparing many homestays, we finally chose Luxe Solace (Datong Ancient City Southeast Yi branch). The entire trip was relaxed, and our family had a very comfortable stay✨ 📍Homestay location: Located within the Southeast Yi historical and cultural district of Datong Ancient City. Right outside are the creative shops and alleys of Southeast Yi. You can walk to the South City Wall, and Huayan Temple, Daiwang Mansion, and the Drum Tower are all nearby, making it very convenient to visit ancient city attractions. It is friendly for families traveling by car; the homestay has a private parking lot, so you don't have to squeeze into public parking spaces outside the ancient city, making it much easier to handle luggage🚗. 🏡The overall style is a new Chinese-style designer courtyard with its own patio. Light and shadows fall on the blue brick eaves, and many corners in the courtyard are perfect for photos📸. The homestay is hidden in a lively district, offering a quiet retreat amidst the bustle. During the day, we explored ancient architecture, and returning to the small courtyard, it instantly became quiet, so we didn't have to worry about nighttime noise affecting the children's rest. The rooms are spacious, facilities are brand new, minibar drinks are free, and they even prepare welcome fruit upon check-in. The details are very thoughtful. 🍜Breakfast features local flavors, including freshly made knife-cut noodles and lamb offal soup, so there's no need to get up early to find breakfast. The butler responds promptly, and you can ask about any travel questions. The service is gentle and unobtrusive. 🗓2-day family itinerary reference Day 1: Arrive at the ancient city in the afternoon and check in. First, take a slow stroll through the Southeast Yi district and check out the creative shops. In the evening, climb the South City Wall to watch the autumn sunset and experience the ancient city at dusk. In the evening, go near the Drum Tower to taste Datong snacks; you can try Hunyuan jelly noodles and shaomai. Day 2: Visit Huayan Temple in the morning, take the kids to see the Liao and Jin dynasty architecture and colored sculptures, and experience the charm of ancient buildings. Return to the courtyard in the afternoon for a short rest, walk around and take photos in the courtyard, then pack up and head home. 💡Family travel tips 1. There is a significant temperature difference between day and night in Datong during the autumn break, and it's cool in the morning and evening, so remember to prepare a thin jacket for the children🧥. 2. The ancient city has many stone-paved roads, so prioritize soft-soled, non-slip shoes for the kids. 3. It is recommended to book Huayan Temple and the Ancient City Wall online in advance to reduce waiting time on-site. 4. Rooms are in high demand during holidays, so try to book your homestay in advance if you plan to travel. A slow autumn break in Pingcheng—step out into the hustle and bustle of the ancient city, and return to the courtyard to enjoy a quiet retreat. It's perfect for a short family vacation🍁

3 days in Datong: Is a guide at Yungang worth it? — traveler post in Datong

3 days in Datong: Is a guide at Yungang worth it?

How to do Datong in late October? This 3-day itinerary connects the Yungang Grottoes, Ancient City Wall, and Hanging Temple. At CNY 1,000–1,500 per person, it’s perfect for those who love ancient architecture and grotto art and want to avoid the crowds~👋 First, the verdict: I highly recommend hiring a guide at the Yungang Grottoes! A CNY 200 tour clearly explains the history and sculptural styles of the main caves, whereas it's easy to just skim through on your own😅 I've tried both, and the differences are below👇 🌟 Why late October is worth visiting After Frost Descent, Datong is 14°C during the day and 1°C in the morning/evening, making it a very dry and comfortable time of year. The air at Yungang is clear this week, and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, the sunlight slants into the front chambers of Caves 9 and 10, creating incredible depth! The birch forests around Mount Heng have passed their peak, with fallen leaves covering the stone steps, making for perfect photo opportunities🍂 Tourist numbers drop significantly after the National Day holiday. There are no lines at Yungang within the first half hour of opening, and the Ancient City Wall cycling path is wide open🚴 In another two weeks, there's a chance of early snow in the northern frontier❄️ 📍 Quick trip overview Target audience: Ancient architecture and grotto enthusiasts / photographers / those looking for an in-depth experience Recommended duration: 3 days, 2 nights | Physical intensity: Moderate (grotto trails + city wall cycling) Cost per person: CNY 1,000–1,500 (excluding round-trip transportation) 🗺️ 3-day itinerary breakdown Day 1️⃣ Grottoes main route | Morning: Yungang Grottoes (register for a guide at 9:00 AM opening) → Caves 5 & 6; Afternoon: Caves 9–13 → Yungang Museum (admission included); Evening: Return to the ancient city Day 2️⃣ Ancient city day | Morning: Shanhua Temple (free) → Huayan Temple (the Bhagavat Sutra Repository is worth extra time); Afternoon: Datong Ancient City Wall (free, rent a bike to ride around); Evening: Dinner at Fenglinge Day 3️⃣ Mount Heng route | Morning: Hanging Temple (go right at 8:00 AM opening) → Mount Heng; Afternoon: Datong Museum (free); Evening: Departure 🍜 Hidden gem eats (where locals go) ① Fenglinge on Gulou East Street: Hundred-flower shaomai, CNY 90 per person. A time-honored restaurant where locals often host guests ② Dongfang Xiaomian in the city center: Sliced noodles, CNY 20 per person. Choose your own toppings; you won't get tired of eating this every day ③ Xiaoxifu Liangfen on Heyang Street: Hunyuan jelly noodles, CNY 15 per person. A jelly noodle stall loved by locals ⚠️ Pitfalls I encountered ① The first time I visited Yungang on my own, I only remembered the Great Buddha after walking through over 20 caves🤦 After hiring a guide, I finally understood what Cave 6 was about ② Yungang guides are divided into standard and expert levels. I didn't clarify this the first time; make sure to confirm the route for the CNY 200 option in advance ③ The Hanging Temple has limited spots for climbing up. I went in the afternoon the first time and they were sold out; I recommend arriving before 8:00 AM ④ Mount Heng is 3 km from the Hanging Temple. I tried to walk there the first time, but ended up having to take a detour and ride the shuttle bus. Buying a combined ticket saves time ⑤ Renting a bike on the ancient city wall requires a deposit. I didn't have enough cash the first time and spent half an hour dealing with it; I recommend having digital payment ready ⑥ In late October, Datong is 1°C in the morning/evening. I only wore a sweater the first time and froze on the city wall. A thick coat is a must! 💰 Cost breakdown (per person) Tickets CNY 347 (Yungang + Huayan Temple + Hanging Temple + climbing + Mount Heng) | Guide CNY 200/tour | Chartered car CNY 200–300/day | Accommodation CNY 150–320/night | Meals CNY 35–80/meal | 3-day total CNY 1,000–1,500 💡 Practical tips 🚌 Transportation: Yungang Grottoes are 16 km west of the city center, accessible by bus line 3. Chartering a car to Hunyuan is more time-efficient 🏨 Accommodation: Stay inside the ancient city to be within walking distance of Shanhua Temple and Huayan Temple 🧥 Clothing: In late October, it's 14°C during the day and 1°C in the morning/evening. Bring a light down jacket + windbreaker 📸 Photography: Cave 20 Great Buddha at Yungang is well-lit in the morning; the ancient city wall has very clear outlines at sunset 📝 Booking: Register for a Yungang guide at the guide desk upon entering the park. Hanging Temple climbing spots are sold out once they're gone for the day 🙋 I'd love to hear your choice Would you pay CNY 200 for a guide at Yungang, or would you rather explore at your own pace? Let me know in the comments~ I'm also sharing the photos I took of the Yungang Great Buddha; the sunlight hitting the grottoes was truly breathtaking. It's also a special experience for couples to visit the grottoes together. I also saw many exquisite artifacts in the museum🏺

A slow-paced guide to Fahua Temple in Datong | Capture the white pagoda, red walls, and architectural details in one go — traveler post in Datong

A slow-paced guide to Fahua Temple in Datong | Capture the white pagoda, red walls, and architectural details in one go

Datong is truly an underrated ancient city. I included Fahua Temple in my walking route through the old town this time, and it unexpectedly became my favorite stop. Fahua Temple isn't as crowded as the temples on Mount Wutai. The red walls, yellow tiles, white pagoda, and ancient architectural details are perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially for those who enjoy quiet photography and soaking in the atmosphere of an ancient city. The highlights of the visit start with the white pagoda. The pagoda itself is very distinctive. Looking at it from near the central axis of the temple, the contrast between the red walls and the blue sky makes for a great photo. Next are the details of the wooden structures; the dougong brackets, eaves, and painted beams and columns are all worth a closer look. I recommend going in the morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and there are fewer people. My favorite part was the quiet corners within the temple grounds, where tree shadows fall on the red walls, giving every snapshot the profound feel of a northern ancient city. I've compiled a few practical photo spots: first, a long shot from in front of the mountain gate, which captures the layers of the architecture and the white pagoda—perfect for a cover photo. Second, a shot using the red walls as leading lines; standing near the central axis and looking back at the white pagoda gives the image more depth. Third, close-ups of the wooden architectural details, perfect for capturing dougong brackets, wind chimes, and eaves. Fourth, the corners with red walls and tree shadows, which are great for portraits and atmospheric shots. If you want to capture a night-time feel, the warm evening light is also beautiful, but be sure to check the opening hours. Tips to avoid pitfalls: Don't treat Fahua Temple as a "check-in and rush" attraction; it's better suited for a slow stroll. Please stay quiet while taking photos so as not to disturb those praying or visiting. If photography is allowed inside the halls, try not to use a flash. Be careful not to climb over barriers in the red wall areas. I recommend combining this with other attractions like the Datong Ancient City Wall and the Nine Dragon Wall for a one-day itinerary to save time. On this trip to Datong, Fahua Temple felt more like an urban secret spot where you can really slow down. If you also love ancient architecture, white pagodas, and the play of light and shadow on red walls, consider adding it to your Datong travel list.

Don't just focus on the plank roads when visiting Maijishan; the clay sculptures are the real stars. — traveler post in Datong

Don't just focus on the plank roads when visiting Maijishan; the clay sculptures are the real stars.

When people think of Maijishan, most first recall the plank roads hanging on the cliff face. It's only when you actually go up that you realize the real highlights are the clay sculptures inside the grottoes. This place is different from many other grottoes; the statues are primarily made of clay, which is why it's known as the "Oriental Sculpture Gallery." Here is a breakdown of how to handle attraction tickets, shuttle buses, guided tours, sightseeing, dining, and accommodation. Maijishan is located in the Maiji District of Tianshui, over 40 km from the city center—about an hour's drive, or accessible by direct bus. The grottoes were excavated early on, with foundations laid during the Later Qin dynasty of the Sixteen Kingdoms period. Over the next thousand-plus years, various dynasties added to them. There are currently over 190 existing grottoes, with Buddhist niches embedded layer upon layer into the mountainside. In 2014, it was listed as a World Heritage site as part of the "Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor." Tianshui gets cold once winter sets in, and it's even colder on the mountain. "Maiji Misty Rain" is a classic Tianshui scene; after the rain, clouds and mist wrap around the mountain, making the scenery particularly stunning. You reach the grotto clusters via the plank roads on the cliff face, which are divided into several levels and numbered as you ascend. The plank roads are narrow and steep with dense steps. You also have to climb a section of stone stairs from the entrance gate to the grottoes, which takes about 20 minutes of walking and stopping. If you have bad knees, hold onto the railings and move slowly. The statues to look for are the clay sculptures: from the slender figures of the Northern Wei to the rounded ones of the Sui and Tang dynasties, you can see how the faces and clothing folds changed across dynasties. Grotto 133, commonly known as the Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, is packed with tiny Buddha statues. The Upper Seven Buddha Pavilion, also called Sanhua Pavilion, is massive; standing before it, you'll feel so awestruck you won't dare speak loudly. The clay sculptures at Maijishan are different from those elsewhere. The mountain is made of conglomerate rock, which is relatively soft and not suitable for direct carving on the cliff face. Instead, artisans used wooden frames for support, shaped them with clay, and then painted them, building them up layer by layer. That's why most of the surviving works are clay sculptures, with very three-dimensional faces and clothing folds. If you look closely at the numbered signs, you can distinguish the styles of different dynasties—the earlier ones tend to be slender, while the later ones are fuller. They share the same lineage as those in Dunhuang and Yungang. Tianshui's snacks are affordable, so save some room for them. "Guagua" is made from buckwheat, topped with chili oil, and has a chewy texture. "Ranran" and "Laolao" are other ways to eat buckwheat noodles. Malatang is a local specialty here, fragrant with red chili oil. Jiangshui noodles are refreshing, and a hot bowl is comforting in cold weather. For a full meal, there are many restaurants around the Fuxi Temple in the city center. Don't just grab a quick bite at the scenic area entrance; it's pricey and the portions are small. It's more cost-effective to head back to the city center. Staying in the city center is more convenient, with plenty of hotels and dining options. If you want to be closer and catch the morning mist, there are also guesthouses and hot spring hotels at the foot of Maijishan and in the Jiezi Hot Spring area—soaking in a hot spring in winter is a great way to relieve fatigue. It gets crowded on weekends, so enter the scenic area early to avoid lines. There's a short walk from the foot of the mountain to the entrance, so staying nearby means you won't have to rush in the morning. If you have extra time, you can check out the surrounding areas. The Fuxi Temple in Tianshui city is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. Yuquan Temple and Nanguo Temple are also in the city, perfect for a half-day trip. To the south is Xianren Cliff, where the mountain scenery shares the same lineage as Maijishan. All in all, the attraction tickets and shuttle bus fees aren't expensive. Staying in the city is more cost-effective than staying near the scenic area, and dining is also more affordable in the city. A few reminders: The plank roads have weight and capacity limits, and some individual grottoes may be closed in rotation for protection. Whether you can enter depends on the situation that day. Plank road access and ticket prices may change throughout the year, so follow the instructions on the on-site notices when you arrive. In winter, the mountain roads may have thin ice, so wear non-slip shoes and bring gloves and a hat. The murals and clay sculptures in the grottoes are fragile and sensitive to moisture, so don't touch them. Occasionally, people at the entrance may try to sell low-priced chartered cars or offer to buy tickets for you; clarify whether these include attraction tickets and shuttle bus fees to avoid being scammed for the sake of convenience. Taking a guided tour is much more informative than wandering around on your own. Guided tours are scheduled by session, and times vary by season; check the daily schedule at the service desk for details. One last thing before you leave: You use the same plank road to go up and down. When it's crowded, stay to one side and don't push. Don't stop in the middle of the path to take photos, as others need to pass. The clay sculptures cannot withstand camera lights, so turn off your flash when taking photos. If you want a quieter experience, visit on a weekday.

Datong | Kyoto's strictest mother!! — traveler post in Datong

Datong | Kyoto's strictest mother!!

Everyone says you have to go to Kyoto to see Tang Dynasty architecture. But!! Datong's Huayan Temple is the real "mother" of them all! 🤯 This massive Liao Dynasty temple faces east. The Mahavira Hall is nine bays wide with a single-eave hip roof; its grandeur is simply overwhelming 💥 As soon as you enter, you're struck by the solemnity— like a stern, unsmiling mother who has stood guard for a thousand years, exuding a commanding, "boss-like" aura 😎 The "Heavenly Palace Pavilion" in the Bogaojiaozang Hall is absolutely incredible! It's the only surviving Liao Dynasty wooden wall cabinet in China. With its massive dougong brackets and deep, overhanging eaves, it's a perfect remnant of the Tang style. Standing in front of it is truly goosebump-inducing ✨ 🏷️ Key takeaway! Kyoto's Tang-style structures are indeed beautiful, but they are refined, "restored" versions. Huayan Temple's bones, however, are authentic, original Liao Dynasty structures! They are older and more authentic than any Tang-style architecture currently in Kyoto 📜 Want to see Tang Dynasty architecture? There's no need to run off to Kyoto. This "strict mother" in Datong has been waiting for you right here, waiting for you to understand the thousand-year-old pride and stubbornness written in her dougong brackets 🥹 📸 Photo tips: Huayan Temple is absolutely stunning on a sunny day! Looking at the mountain scenery from the lake by the green golf course, the distant mountains and the temple's upturned eaves create a perfect composition. Every shot has a cinematic quality 🎬

Visit Huanglong Prefecture! A one-day trip to Nong'an to explore Jilin's thousand-year Liao-Jin history — traveler post in Datong

Visit Huanglong Prefecture! A one-day trip to Nong'an to explore Jilin's thousand-year Liao-Jin history

One-day Liao-Jin historical and cultural tour in Nong'an near Changchun | A study tour to the thousand-year-old Huanglong Prefecture and a visit to the ancient Liao Dynasty pagoda Starting from Changchun, the top choice for a one-day cultural study tour is the Nong'an Liao-Jin history and culture route. This is the ancient Huanglong Prefecture, the core area of Jilin's Liao-Jin culture. The entire route is rich in historical sites, suitable for history enthusiasts and student study tours. The core highlight is the Nong'an Liao Pagoda, where you can experience Liao Dynasty architectural aesthetics up close and immerse yourself in the Liao-Jin era of Northeast China. Itinerary locations: Nong'an Liao Pagoda (Nong'an Ancient Pagoda), Liao-Jin Culture Museum, Huanglong Prefecture Ancient City Ruins Depart from Changchun by car in the early morning for a drive of about 1 hour. The first stop is the Nong'an Liao Pagoda. This octagonal, 13-story, dense-eave solid brick pagoda has weathered a thousand years, its blue brick body bearing the mottled traces of time. Climb the viewing platform to photograph the panoramic view of the ancient pagoda; the details of the pagoda's niches, dougong (bracket sets), and brick carvings are worth a close look. There are information boards in the park, or you can hire a guide to learn about the architectural features of the Liao Dynasty and the historical stories of Huanglong Prefecture, making it perfect for study tours. For lunch, dine at a local specialty restaurant in Nong'an County. We recommend Northeast home-style dishes such as sweet and sour pork (guobaorou), pork with sauerkraut, farmhouse vegetable platter with dipping sauce, and mixed grain rice. The ingredients are fresh, the dishes are prepared to standard, the flavors are authentic, and the portions are generous—perfect for resting and refueling. In the afternoon, head to the Liao-Jin Culture Museum, which displays precious artifacts from the Liao and Jin periods, including pottery, bronze ware, and rubbings of Khitan script. The exhibition hall has soft lighting and a quiet, solemn atmosphere. Follow the exhibits to understand the Khitan people, the Liao-Jin wars, and the historical changes of Huanglong Prefecture. Study groups can take notes here; please do not use flash when taking photos. The last stop is the Huanglong Prefecture Ancient City Ruins. On the vast Northeast Plain, the remaining rammed-earth city walls stand quietly in the vast wilderness. Standing on the ruins, imagine the prosperity of the ancient city and feel the vicissitudes of history. It is perfect for taking atmospheric documentary-style photos. ⏰ Travel tips: Driving is recommended. The Liao Pagoda park and ruins are free to visit. The museum is closed on Mondays; please confirm opening hours before you go. Guide services are charged separately. The outdoor ruins area is exposed, so take precautions against sun and wind. Study groups can book group tours in advance. 💰 Cost reference: ¥120/person (excluding guide fees; mainly for dining; no mandatory admission fees)

Shanhua Temple, Datong | I cried when I locked eyes with a bodhisattva from 900 years ago — traveler post in Datong

Shanhua Temple, Datong | I cried when I locked eyes with a bodhisattva from 900 years ago

Before I went to Datong, everyone told me to visit Huayan Temple. But when I stood inside Shanhua Temple's Mahavira Hall and locked eyes with that auspicious goddess, I suddenly understood that some encounters really do depend on fate. Her name is Dajixiang Gongde Tian. Liang Sicheng called her "a rare masterpiece" She stands on the east side of the Mahavira Hall, eyes lowered, lips slightly upturned. It's not that lofty, superior kind of compassion; she feels more like a neighborly sister—gentle, calm, with a hint of something left unsaid. Standing before her, I suddenly felt tearful. Nine hundred years ago, Jin-dynasty craftsmen, with a handful of clay and a few strokes of paint, carved the word "compassion" into her brows and eyes. She has witnessed the iron cavalry and weapons of the Liao and Jin, the booming incense of the Ming and Qing, war and peace, and generation after generation kneeling, making vows, crying, and leaving. Yet she has always stood there, quietly, neither sorrowful nor joyful. At that moment I finally understood why so many people make a special trip to Datong just to see her for a moment. Besides her, there are three hidden gems here · the cutest Four Heavenly Kings: the western Heavenly King, Guangmu, at the shanmen has his hands wrapped by a green dragon and an adorably dopey expression. Netizens have nicknamed him "the eye-catching king," and he even has his own merch. Unlike those fierce, wide-eyed heavenly kings, he looks like the exhausted worker's mouthpiece—melancholic and cute at the same time · lotus-shaped diagonal dougong: the bracket sets under the eaves of the Hall of the Three Saints spread out like a blooming lotus, layer upon layer. When Liang Sicheng saw it, he wrote, "a great dougong, and eaves of far-reaching depth." It's a Jin-dynasty craftsman's showpiece and a marvel of engineering and aesthetics · Zhu Bian stele: Southern Song envoy Zhu Bian was detained by the Jin state for 16 years and wrote this inscription in the temple. The inscription holds his longing for his homeland, his integrity, and his restraint. More than 800 years later, the characters are still clear, and each word reads like it bleeds Practical information · address: No. 6 Nansi Street, Pingcheng District, Datong, Shanxi · admission: CNY 50 in peak season (Apr 1–Oct 31), CNY 40 in low season (Nov 1–Mar 31) · opening hours: 8:30 AM–5:30 PM (closed at 5:00 PM in low season) · suggested route: Five-Dragon Wall → shanmen (Hall of the Heavenly Kings) → Hall of the Three Saints → Puxian Pavilion → Mahavira Hall · best time: 10–11 AM, when the east-side window frames of the Mahavira Hall cast a halo over the statue, making it breathtaking If you come to Datong, don't just visit the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple. Spend two hours at Shanhua Temple, lock eyes with the auspicious goddess for a while, and listen to the wind as it passes through the halls—you'll understand what it means to see "a thousand years in a single glance."

Yungang Grottoes

First, let's talk about the attractions. Our Shanxi tour started in Ruicheng and traveled north for seven days before arriving in Datong. Trusting the government's rigorous selection process, the Yungang Grottoes were indeed the most expensive and best! We met our enthusiastic tour guide, Liu Jing, who provided a professional two-hour explanation, giving us a deeper understanding of the history of the Northern Wei Dynasty! Afterwards, she even sent us many precious old photos of the grottoes – so thoughtful!

Yingxian Wooden Pagoda

Highly recommended! This 970-year-old wooden pagoda, built entirely of wood without nails, has stood majestically for centuries, a true marvel. It's easily accessible by direct shuttle bus from Datong Ancient City and Datong South Railway Station.

Xuankong Temple

Amazing hanging temple on the outskirts of Datong City, you can see it from down for just 15 yuan or (if you are lucky) you can get the entrance to climb the stairs for an extra 100 yuan. Mandatory shuttle buses from the Visitor Center to the site costs 20 yuan roundtrip.

Huayan Temple

It's beautiful! The painted decorations in Shanxi are truly unique; it feels like you're surrounded by immortals. Huayan Temple has the largest existing chiwen (mythical beast ornament), and the all-copper underground palace is also astonishing. Definitely worth a visit!

Datong Ancient City

It's definitely worth a visit. Huayan Temple in Datong Ancient City was built during the Liao, Jin, and Northern Wei dynasties. The architecture is magnificent and simple, and it's remarkably well-preserved. The Buddha statues inside are solemn and dignified, with vivid depictions. The murals, though hundreds of years old, remain remarkably vibrant. We are grateful to the people of Datong for protecting them so well.

Shanhua Temple

Shanhua Temple, located in the ancient city of Datong, Shanxi Province, is commonly known as the South Temple. It was among the first batch of national protected sites. Originally built during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt by Master Yuanman during the Jin Dynasty. It was named Shanhua Temple during the Zhengtong era of the Ming Dynasty. It retains four original Liao and Jin Dynasty buildings: the Liao Dynasty Mahavira Hall (with the Jin Dynasty Twenty-Four Deities painted sculptures inside, which are masterpieces of Liao and Jin sculpture, especially the auspicious goddess), the Jin Dynasty Heavenly King Hall (the largest Jin Dynasty hip-roofed mountain gate in China), the Three Saints Hall (famous for its magnificent sloping arches and Jin Dynasty vermilion tablet), and the Puxian Pavilion. The whole temple faces south and has a complete layout. It is the best-preserved Liao and Jin Dynasty temple complex in China and was highly praised by Liang Sicheng. There are also remnants of the Ming Dynasty Five Dragon Wall in front of the temple.

Heng Shan Mountain

The Hengshan shuttle bus from the east city wall of Datong Ancient City is very convenient. It departs on time, the seats are clean, and it goes directly to the Hengshan Visitor Center, saving you the hassle of transferring. It's good value for money, and choosing it for your trip to Hengshan is worry-free 👍 and they are very responsible.

Dai Wang Fu·Daming Baixi Garden

Definitely worth a visit! You can enter the park anytime within three days. There are shows, various games, NPC interactions, and most importantly, the iron flower performance is truly spectacular! The performers in the park are all very friendly!

朔风万里朔风万里

Nine-Dragon Wall

One of the three major Nine-Dragon Walls, it's definitely worth a visit. The venue is rather small; it's actually only one side, so you can see the whole thing from the outside. However, there are explanations inside, so if you want to learn about the history, it's worth going in.

Datong Ancient City Wall

During the Spring Festival, the lantern festival and traditional song and dance performances were impressive and charming, and the crowds were quite large, making it very lively. There were also float parades, allowing you to see the performers up close. The ancient city wall is very long, and if you like walking, you can walk and practice on it.
