2 days and 1 night: I found the living history of Northwest China in Wuwei — traveler post in Jining

2 days and 1 night: I found the living history of Northwest China in Wuwei

Wuwei, located at the eastern end of the Hexi Corridor, was historically known as Liangzhou. It was named to honor the military might and prestige of the Han Dynasty. This is the place where the symbol of China's tourism was unearthed. It is home to royal grottoes that predate the Mogao Caves. It holds a stone tablet that cracked the code of the Western Xia script. It was the site of a historic alliance that changed the map of China. With 5 major national historical and cultural sites, over 100 protected cultural sites at various levels, and tens of thousands of precious artifacts, this small northwestern city contains a condensed history of half of China. · 👉🏻 Itinerary 1️⃣ Day 1: Haizang Temple (no admission fee) — Wuwei Museum (no reservation required, swipe ID card) — Beiguan Market (dining) — Leitai Han Tomb (site where the Bronze Galloping Horse was unearthed) — South City Gate Tower 2️⃣ Day 2: Kumarajiva Temple (no admission fee) — Dayun Temple — Wuwei City Wall Ruins Square — Wuwei Confucian Temple — Western Xia Museum Don't be intimidated by the number of stops each day; because every attraction is very close by, you can just rent an e-bike in Wuwei city. The only exception is Haizang Temple, which is north of the city center. · — Some personal favorite attractions 1️⃣ Wuwei Museum: If you enjoy grottoes or Han culture, you must visit this museum. It not only has many bronze artifacts but also features a special exhibition on the Tiantishan Grottoes and replicas from the Jinta Temple Grottoes. No reservation is needed; just swipe your ID card to enter. 2️⃣ Dayun Temple: A Tang Dynasty bell that has resonated through Liangzhou for 1,300 years. The "Morning Bell at Dayun Temple," one of the eight famous sights of Liangzhou in the Qing Dynasty, refers to this place. Inside the temple is a Tang Dynasty alloy bronze bell—the only original artifact that has survived a thousand years of earthquakes and wars. You can also climb the bell tower for a bird's-eye view of the Wuwei cityscape for an admission fee of just 10 yuan. 3️⃣ Wuwei Confucian Temple: First built in the second year of the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty, it is over 500 years old. Known as the crown of Longyou academies, it is ranked alongside the Confucius Temple in Qufu and the Jianshui Confucian Temple as one of the three major Confucius temples in China. The 44 giant plaques hanging under the eaves of the Guiji Hall in the Wenchang Palace are particularly stunning, though I personally find the 40 yuan admission fee a bit pricey. 4️⃣ Wuwei South Gate Tower: A landmark of Wuwei. It lights up at night for a beautiful view, and you can climb it for free during the day. Inside, there is a Five Liang Culture Museum. While most items are replicas, it is very helpful for understanding the Five Liang culture and the history of the Hexi Corridor. · . About transportation: I arrived at Wuwei Station, which is close to the city center and attractions. About food: Wuwei barbecue, "three-piece set" (San Tao Che), sweet embryo (Tian Pei Zi), and apricot skin tea. If you have time, I recommend browsing the local Xinle Supermarket; it has many snacks and delicious foods. · — I am Baiyang, and my guides for the Hexi Corridor are being updated continuously❗

Jianshui hides a 700-year-old Confucian sanctuary! The largest Confucius temple in the south is stunning

Don't just stroll the old streets and eat grilled tofu when visiting Jianshui Ancient Town! This Jianshui Confucius Temple, hidden in the heart of the old town, is the true top-tier treasure of Southern Yunnan's cultural heritage. Founded in the Yuan Dynasty, with over 700 years of history, it is the largest Confucius temple in Southern China. The ancient architecture is well-preserved, there are few tourists, and the red walls and ancient cypress trees are filled with a profound sense of history. 🏛️ Over 700 years of Southern Yunnan's Confucian roots Jianshui Confucius Temple was founded in the 22nd year of the Zhiyuan reign of the Yuan Dynasty (1285 AD) and has a history of over 740 years. After more than 50 expansions and renovations across the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it eventually formed a grand layout covering 114 mu. Its current scale, architectural standards, and state of preservation are second only to the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, and the Beijing Confucius Temple, ranking third in the country and first in the south. The entire temple was built strictly according to the regulations of the Qufu Confucius Temple. It faces south, spreads symmetrically along the north-south central axis, and features six courtyards that progress layer by layer. With over 30 buildings, including one pond, two halls, three pavilions, and eight archways, it is arranged in a staggered yet orderly fashion. Its rigorous design and magnificent scale make it the core landmark for the inheritance of Confucian culture in Southern Yunnan. ✨ Unique highlights of this ancient architectural treasure ▪️Oval Pan Pond (Xuehai): One of a kind among Confucius temples nationwide! Most standard temple ponds are semi-circular, but the Pan Pond at Jianshui Confucius Temple is a rare oval shape. It covers a vast area and is the largest of its kind among Confucius temples in China. The water surface is wide and clear, reflecting the red walls and ancient cypress trees. The Sile Pavilion in the center of the pond is hidden in the shadows of the trees. "Xuehai Wenlan" has been the first of the ten scenic spots of Jianshui since ancient times, offering unique charm on both sunny and cloudy days. ▪️Dacheng Hall (Hall of the First Teacher): The core main hall of the temple. The entire hall is supported by 28 giant pillars, 22 of which are carved from single blocks of bluestone. The most stunning features are the two coiled dragon stone pillars in front of the hall, which use relief and openwork carving techniques. The dragon patterns are vigorous and swirling, representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship in the entire temple. The 22 carved screen doors on the front are filled with patterns of flowers, birds, and auspicious beasts, with exquisite details. ▪️Ancient Steles and Cypress Forest: The temple preserves over 90 stone steles from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, recording the temple's renovations, local education, and imperial examination history. Inside the courtyard, ancient cypress trees tower into the sky, many of which are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The shade blocks out the sun, making a stroll through the area quiet and solemn. 📸 Visiting tips The morning light is soft, making it the best time to photograph the architectural light and shadows. For outfits, light-colored or "New Chinese" style clothing is recommended, as it pairs perfectly with the red walls and ancient cypress trees. The atmosphere of the Confucius Temple is solemn and respectful, so please keep your voice low while visiting. After finishing, you can stop by the nearby Xuezheng Examination Hall to fully understand the history of the imperial examination in Southern Yunnan in one trip. 🎫 Practical information ▫️Admission: 40 CNY for adults; half-price for students and seniors with valid ID. You can also purchase a combined ticket for the ancient town for better value ▫️Opening hours: 8:00 AM–6:30 PM; last entry at 6:30 PM ▫️Location: Lin'an Road, Jianshui Ancient Town; a 10-minute walk from the center of the ancient town ▫️Recommended duration: 1.5–2 hours Don't rush. Take your time walking among the red walls and ancient cypress trees to feel the 700 years of cultural heritage. This is the most meaningful way to experience Jianshui Ancient Town.

Jining Fenghuangtai Botanical Garden | Spider lily photo spot, catch the last of September's autumn red — traveler post in Jining

Jining Fenghuangtai Botanical Garden | Spider lily photo spot, catch the last of September's autumn red

🌺 The spider lilies are in full bloom, miss them and you'll have to wait another year In the shade under Fenghuang Pavilion, patches of spider lilies are quietly blooming. Mostly red, with some yellow, pink, and white, they bring a cool and soothing vibe. The red lycoris radiata are especially striking against the greenery, and any photo you take will look like a stunning autumn shot. 📍 Specific location: In the shade around the high platform of Fenghuang Pavilion. Fenghuang Pavilion is the highest point in the park, and the antique-style flying eaves make for great photos. Enter from the South Gate and head toward the center of the park to find it. · -- 🚌 Transportation & basic info Bus: Routes 33, 86, and 38 all go directly there. The stop is right at the entrance, and it only costs 1 yuan. Search for "Fenghuangtai Botanical Garden" on your navigation app; driving is also convenient, with 300 to 500 parking spaces available. Admission: Free, open all day (6:00 AM–6:30 PM) Address: Guanghe West Road, Rencheng District, Jining City (west side of the intersection of West Outer Ring Road/National Highway 105 and Guanghe West Road) · -- 📸 Photography tips Spider lilies are short, so I recommend crouching or taking low-angle shots with the flying eaves of Fenghuang Pavilion in the background for a full traditional aesthetic. The flower fields are concentrated in the shade around Fenghuang Pavilion; the colors actually look more translucent in the diffused light of a cloudy day. The light is soft and not harsh from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, which is perfect for portraits. · -- ⚠️ Important reminder The entire spider lily plant is toxic and contains lycorine. Ingestion can cause vomiting and spasms, and those with allergies may have a reaction if they touch it. Please only view them from a distance; do not pick or touch them. Visitors with children should be especially careful to supervise them. · -- "The spider lily blooms for a thousand years and falls for a thousand years; the flowers and leaves never meet." The lycoris radiata blooms around the Autumn Equinox, hence the name "other shore flower," and its flower language is "eternal longing." September is its most beautiful season, so find some free time to visit Fenghuangtai for an autumn rendezvous 🌺

This ancient village replicates the style of the Spring and Autumn period, where bluestone paths and black-tiled eaves create a picturesque scene at every turn. You can stroll along the "Analects Trail" engraved with famous quotes from sages, or visit the intangible cultural heritage workshops to experience Lujin weaving or Analects rubbing—perfect for an educational trip with children. You might even encounter NPCs dressed in Hanfu on the street for interactive poetry recitations, where you can win small cultural souvenirs. The sense of immersion is incredible. When night falls, the fish lantern parade winds through the streets. The water-based live performance, light show, and molten iron fireworks filling the sky perfectly capture the romance of "a night of dancing fish and dragons." We recommend arriving in the afternoon to enjoy both the day and night views. Transportation: Navigate to "Nishan Tourist Center." Parking is free. The entrance is shared with the Nishan Sacred Land, and you can purchase joint tickets to visit both attractions.

Qufu's Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and Kong Family Mansion

The ticket price is a bit pricey, and there are too many tricycle drivers soliciting passengers and offering tour guide services along the roadside and at the scenic area entrance. The streets are deserted and dark at night, and many shops are closed during the day. You can go to the Confucius Temple entrance before 8 am to watch the opening ceremony, then visit the Confucius Mansion, and then return to the Confucius Temple to wait for the 11 am sacrificial ceremony. In the afternoon, go to the Confucius Cemetery. However, it's best to have a reliable guide to understand the history inside. In summary: It's worth staying overnight if you're passing by, but not worth making a special trip from outside the province.

Nishan Sacred Land

Nestled amidst mountains and water, Nishan offers stunning autumn scenery via a scenic shuttle bus along winding mountain roads, or you can walk to the park. Gazing at the intermittently appearing Laozi statue, visitors can follow performances at different times by scanning a QR code. The park also features the University Hall, allowing visitors to soak in its cultural atmosphere. The nighttime scenery and light show are breathtaking, with the "Golden Sound and Jade Resonance" performance being particularly creative. Note: Individual visitors must take the free shuttle bus from the visitor center to enter the park.

Nishan Cultural Tourism Resort

The hotel is located within the scenic area and has its own parking lot. On our first day, they gave us snacks and drinks, and when we left, they gave us a souvenir—a copy of the Analects of Confucius. The hotel was very clean and tidy, and they upgraded our room for free. Overall, it exceeded our expectations and is a great place to stay when visiting the Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, and Confucius Cemetery.

Confucius Temple

The official guide, Mr. Li, was excellent and definitely a plus for our experience at the Confucius Temple! Because it was past the summer holidays, there weren't many tourists, which made it a really pleasant experience. Mr. Li spoke softly and gently, making the explanations very comfortable, and the content was rich and interactive. Highly recommended!

Confucius Museum

Having traveled extensively and visited numerous museums, this was my first time hiring a guided tour. Today, there weren't many people in my group; I was the only one, meaning the guide was essentially providing a one-on-one explanation. Our guide, Wang Xuemei, didn't slack off just because she was only serving one person. Instead, she spoke calmly and patiently, without rushing me. She not only explained the origins and stories of the artifacts but also incorporated current online trends, answering my questions along the way. The guided tour lasted nearly 2.5 hours, truly excellent value for money. It gave me a much deeper understanding of Confucius and Confucianism. Thank you! A must-see!

Shuipo Liangshan Scenic Area

Having seen Yang Zhi Selling His Knife, Cleverly Seizing the Birthday Gifts, Wu Song Fighting the Tiger, and the Real and Fake Li Kui, the overall experience was quite good. The only slight regret was that it didn't feel like a deep dive into the story. The staff at the scenic area were very polite and enthusiastic, and there weren't too many tourists, which was acceptable.

Kong Family Mansion

They're all imitation ancient buildings, one large courtyard, overly commercialized. The back garden is alright, but the Confucius Mansion in the Three Confucius Sites area isn't good value for money. It's not as nice as the Confucius Temple.

Nishan Luyuan Village Scenic Area

Although it's a man-made ancient town, it's truly beautiful, especially when the lights are on. The daytime "One Breeze" performance and the evening "Lu Yuan Celebrates a Bountiful Year" show are both spectacular. The downside is the guokui (a type of flatbread) I bought on the intangible cultural heritage street—the beef and preserved vegetable flavors were basically just two pieces of dough with almost no filling, and they weren't cheap either. Be careful when buying from there.
