The Seafood Club is a vibrant and intricately prepared seafood medley that is a staple in Dalian home cooking. It features a mix of luxurious ingredients such as shark fins, rehydrated sea cucumbers, shrimp, cooked chicken, fish, rehydrated tendons, and abalone. Historically, it has been the highlight dish at festive wedding celebrations in the area.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal time to visit Dalian is from May to September. During this period, the weather is mild and comfortable, making it ideal for enjoying the city's outdoor attractions, such as its beautiful beaches and coastal parks. This time frame also coincides with several popular events, including the Dalian Chinese Scholar Tree Blossom Affairs and the Dalian International Fashion Festival. However, it is worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so it can be crowded.

Useful Guide

The official language in Dalian is Mandarin Chinese. However, the local dialect known as Dalian-hua is also prevalent, which might pose comprehension challenges for travelers. Translation and interpretation services in the city are not extensively detailed, but English is increasingly spoken, albeit not widely understood. For effective communication, tourists are advised to learn basic Mandarin phrases and use translation apps. Simple gestures and visual aids like maps can also facilitate smoother interactions in Dalian.

WeChat: A versatile app integrating messaging, social media, and digital wallet functionalities, essential for communication and daily transactions.

Alipay: Widely used for payments, this app allows easy QR code transactions and access to public transportation without a Chinese phone number.

MetroMan: Helps in navigating the metro systems of major cities in China, assisting with route planning and cost calculation.

Baidu Maps: Provides accurate navigation and location services across China, surpassing Google Maps in local usage and reliability.

WAYGO: A convenient translation app that translates Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text into English without the need for an internet connection, useful for understanding signs and menus.

Mobile data packages for tourists in China are available through local carriers such as China Mobile and Unicom. China Mobile offers prepaid data SIM cards with unlimited text messages and calls within China, and high-speed connections, sometimes even 5G. Unicom provides SIM cards with data packs that include unlimited music applications, and both do not require long-term contracts. Prices for eSIMs with unlimited data start at just $6 for China.

Public WiFi in China is widely available in places like airports, restaurants, coffee shops, and malls. However, connecting to these networks often requires a Chinese phone number for text verification, which can be a challenge for travelers without a local SIM card. Global WiFi devices like Skyroam can be a convenient alternative, offering the ability to connect multiple devices and requiring no additional setup upon arrival in China.

Dalian experiences a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with oceanic features. Winters are cold, windy, and dry, while summers are warm, humid, and rainy. The city enjoys four distinct seasons with an average annual temperature of around 10°C. Precipitation is concentrated in the summer months, with 60-70% of the annual rainfall occurring during this period.

For travelers, it is advisable to wear layers during spring and autumn, with jackets and sweaters recommended. Summers call for light clothing such as T-shirts, shorts, and skirts, but always carry an umbrella or rainwear for evening showers. In winter, heavy jackets, gloves, and warm shoes are essential due to the cold north winds.

Be prepared for occasional dust in spring, which can cause breathing problems and eye irritation. During July to early October, typhoons may affect the area, so it's important to monitor weather forecasts and take necessary precautions.

In Dalian, mobile payments, bank cards, and cash are the primary payment methods for foreign tourists.

Mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used, and visitors can set these up with a bank card, although obtaining a card for short visits can be challenging. Major credit and debit cards such as UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, JCB, and American Express are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions. For cash transactions, "change wallets" with small-denomination notes are available, and ATMs support withdrawals with international bank cards.

When using ATMs, be mindful of potential transaction fees, and note that by June 30, more merchants and all major banks' ATMs in Dalian will support foreign card transactions.

Dalian Xinghai counter-style Japanese dining | I just love their sea urchin!!!

When visiting Xinghai in Dalian for food, you must head to this sushi bar Japanese restaurant! For an immersive experience, be sure to book a seat at the sushi bar in advance to witness the chef hand-pressing the sushi, maximizing both the atmosphere and the sense of occasion. 🍣 Chef's Selection 8-Piece Nigiri Sushi The chef prepares it on the spot, precisely controlling the temperature and acidity of the vinegared rice. Each of the 8 types of seafood has its own unique flavor; the fish is fresh and tender, and the rice is perfectly balanced. Take a bite and experience the pure, fresh sweetness of the ingredients themselves. 🧡 Salmon Roe and Sea Urchin Rice Bowl Who can resist a bowl full of golden sea urchin rice! Fresh sea urchin is shucked to order and piled on top, creamy and smooth, topped with popping salmon roe. Mix it all together and take a bite; the creamy sweetness of the sea urchin blends with the crisp, bursting roe. The flavors of the ocean layer upon layer—it's intoxicatingly fresh. ✨ "Three-Mouth" Dalian Purple Sea Urchin Hand-Pressed Sushi Our signature ace dish! We use local Dalian purple sea urchin, with a thick layer covering the sushi. Without unnecessary seasoning, it maximizes the unique, rich, and sweet flavor of the purple sea urchin. A must-order for sea urchin lovers! 🚢 Yingmu Chef's Selection 10-Kind Sashimi Platter Carefully selected seasonal deep-sea catch of the day, with 10 types of sashimi gathered on one platter. Expertly sliced and served fresh. The scampi is sweet and firm, the tuna is rich and tender, and the various white fish are refreshing and crisp. The shrimp and shellfish are fresh and layered in flavor. The ice locks in the original taste of the ocean, offering a pure, lingering sweetness. Elegantly plated, it's a premium choice for any banquet. An established Japanese restaurant that has been deeply rooted in Dalian for many years. Ingredients are selected daily, and they are generous with their portions. Take my advice! If you're visiting Dalian, set aside a day for Lüshun. — traveler post in Dalian

Take my advice! If you're visiting Dalian, set aside a day for Lüshun.

If you're traveling to Dalian, you must set aside one day for Lushun. Lushun and Dalian are the "twin brothers" mentioned in Wen Yiduo's "Song of the Seven Sons" 👬. The Lushun in the poem has now become the Lushunkou District of Dalian. 🚇 How to get to Lushun? It's super convenient! Take Dalian Metro Line 12 directly to "Lushun Station." You can take a taxi to various attractions right from the exit. Transportation is not a problem at all. 📃 Highly recommended: get off halfway at "Tahewan Station" to take a look 👀. This is a sea-view themed station 🌊. Enjoy the sea breeze, take some photos, and then get back on the train to "Lushun Station." 🚩 One-day itinerary recommendation: Lushun Prison Site of the Russo-Japanese War > Taiyanggou Historical and Cultural District > Lushun Museum > Lushun Old Railway Station (exterior view only) > Baiyu Mountain 🕯️ Lushun Prison Site of the Russo-Japanese War This is a witness to a heavy chapter in modern Chinese history. The prison site is well-preserved. Walking inside, you can truly feel the solemnity and oppression of history. It's suitable for a quiet visit; remember to maintain a sense of reverence. 🍂 Taiyanggou Historical and Cultural District The area preserves 353 century-old buildings from the Russo-Japanese colonial period, including national-level cultural heritage sites like the Lushun Museum, the former site of the Kwantung Army Headquarters, and the Sino-Soviet Friendship Tower. It's especially beautiful for a stroll in autumn. 🏛️ Lushun Museum A national first-grade museum with a rich collection, and the building itself is worth seeing. If you want to understand the past of Lushun and Dalian, you must come here. It's free to enter, but remember to book in advance! 🚂 Lushun Old Railway Station (exterior view only) An important stop in the history of railways in Northeast China, with an exterior that feels very vintage. Although you can only view it from the outside, that sense of old-time atmosphere is truly irreplaceable, and it's great for photos. ⛰️ Baiyu Mountain One of Lushun's city landmarks. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Lushunkou. With the mountains and sea connected, you can take in the entire port and city area. If you go in the evening, you can also see a very gentle sunset. Lushun is not the kind of place where you "check in and leave." It's better suited for walking slowly, listening slowly, and feeling slowly. When you come to Dalian, don't just go to the beach. Set aside one day for Lushunkou District, and you will see a deeper side of this city 💙

The top-tier Japanese restaurant in Dalian Xinghai! I never get tired of it, no matter how often I go 😭 — traveler post in Dalian

The top-tier Japanese restaurant in Dalian Xinghai! I never get tired of it, no matter how often I go 😭

Seriously! I never get tired of eating at this Japanese restaurant, Yingmu Qianhe!! A hidden gem of a Japanese restaurant in a prime spot at Xinghai Square. A 7-story standalone Japanese-style building with a stunning, direct view of the Cross-Sea Bridge. Authentic Japanese kappo craftsmanship—a bowl of sea urchin rice that captures the fresh essence of Dalian.✨ Their "Three-Mouth" Sea Urchin Hand-Pressed Sushi I order it every time I come. One bite is full of fresh sweetness—soft, sticky, and refreshing. It’s truly satisfying in just one bite; I never get tired of it.🤤 The main event has to be the fresh sea urchin rice!! Golden horse dung sea urchin, shucked to order. A golden layer piled high. Creamy and sweet upon the first bite, with absolutely no fishy taste. Pure, natural flavor straight from the ocean.💛 The freshness is off the charts!! Perfect for romantic dates, get-togethers with friends, family reunions, or high-end business dinners. After the meal, take a stroll through Xinghai Square to enjoy the sea breeze. A one-stop destination for Dalian's sea views, delicious food, and a sense of occasion. When coming to Xinghai for Japanese food, Yingmu Qianhe Xinghai Branch is the top choice.

The Ultimate Dalian Xinghai Square Guide! Just Follow These Steps — traveler post in Dalian

The Ultimate Dalian Xinghai Square Guide! Just Follow These Steps

I just visited Dalian's Xinghai Square with friends last week, and it was so much better than I expected✨. It truly lives up to its reputation as Dalian's landmark urban living room. Feeling the Bohai Sea breeze while watching seagulls fly over the giant book sculpture was incredibly healing. I've compiled all the practical information here, so if it's your first time visiting, just follow this guide. First, let me clarify the core photo spots in the square so you don't waste time wandering around: 1. The Giant Book Sculpture⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is the curved relief wall in the center of the square, which records Dalian's urban history. Taking photos from the top of the book looks amazing. Shooting silhouettes against the sunset in the evening creates a perfect atmosphere. Many locals also come here to walk and bring their kids. If you want to take photos without crowds, come early. 2. The Centennial City Sculpture Footprints⭐⭐⭐⭐ Located on the walkway right in front of the book sculpture, it features 1,000 pairs of footprints from Dalian citizens of different ages, representing a timeline from 1899 to 1999. It's very meaningful, so remember to look down and find them—don't miss it. 3. Feeding Seagulls by the Sea⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ There is a waterfront platform on the seaside of the square. There are plenty of seagulls in August. You can buy a bag of seagull food nearby for CNY 10. When throwing it, hold your hand high; the bold seagulls will snatch it right from your hand, making for great photos. Remember not to feed them bread you brought yourself, as it's bad for their digestion. 4. Cross-Sea Bridge Viewing Point⭐⭐⭐⭐ The viewing platform at the southwest corner of the square is the perfect spot to see the Xinghai Bay Bridge. During the day, the bridge lying across the sea is spectacular. At night, after the lights turn on, the blue and purple light strings reflect off the water, making for beautiful photos. If you have enough time, you can also stroll through the nearby Xinghai Park, which has an old-fashioned Ferris wheel and sea-based amusement rides. Alternatively, take a walk along Binhai Road; the coastal scenery along the way is stunning. There's no need to rush between attractions—just taking your time is very relaxing. 📍Address: Xinghai Square, Shahekou District, Dalian. Take Metro Line 1 to Xinghai Square Station, exit from Exit A, and walk for 5 minutes. You won't need to go out of your way. ⚠️ Practical Tips: The square is huge, and it takes about 1.5 hours to walk the whole thing, so I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. It's windy by the sea, so even if you visit in summer, I suggest bringing a light jacket, as it cools down quickly in the evening. For parking, you can use the underground parking lot at the square; it costs CNY 10 per hour and is more convenient than temporary roadside parking. If it's your first time in Dalian, I highly recommend making Xinghai Square your first stop. When you're feeling the sea breeze and looking out at the ocean, you'll understand why so many people love this coastal city🌊. DalianTravelGuide XinghaiBayBridge DalianFamilyTrip

Avoid the crowds! Hidden gems at Xinghai Square — traveler post in Dalian

Avoid the crowds! Hidden gems at Xinghai Square

I used to think Xinghai Square was just about the crowded giant footprints and fountains. After exploring for 3 hours, I discovered that the hidden spots tucked away in the corners are a whole different world🌊 You don't have to fight for photo spots with other tourists; it's incredibly relaxing to just enjoy the sea breeze, zone out, and take photos. As a Dalian landmark, Xinghai Square was actually built on reclaimed land and is larger than two Tiananmen Squares combined. Most tourists congregate around the central Centennial City Sculpture and the musical fountain. In reality, the corners of the square near the west side and the sea are the leisure spots locals actually frequent—they're less crowded, beautiful, and offer a direct, panoramic view of the cross-sea bridge. I've put together a list of a few hidden gems I've personally checked out. They're easy to visit one after another without getting tired: ⭐ West Wing Breakwater Boardwalk: A 10-minute walk west from the Centennial City Sculpture. The boardwalk extends toward the sea, offering an unobstructed view of the Xinghai Bay Bridge. In the afternoon, when the sun hits at an angle, the sea sparkles like scattered gold. You can take photos without any strangers in the background. Leaning against the railing, feeling the sea breeze, and listening to the waves hitting the rocks is incredibly healing. ⭐ Grassy slope behind the Shell Museum: Few people head this way. The gentle, grassy slope faces the square's carousel, with the silhouette of the cross-sea bridge in the distance. It's a fantastic spot for a picnic or watching the sunset. You can even get a full view of the fountain show without having to squeeze into the crowd in front of it. ⭐ Abandoned old pier on the east side: Located near the yacht harbor, there's a preserved section of the old pier boardwalk. The rusty iron railings and old lighthouse have a distinct retro vibe, making it perfect for moody photos or street photography. You might occasionally run into locals fishing; chat with them, and you might hear some great old stories about Dalian. ⭐ Rocky area below the seaside viewing platform: At low tide, you can walk out onto the rocks toward the sea. You can find small crabs and hermit crabs. It's wonderfully cool to wade in the water during the summer, and much more comfortable than crowding onto the beach. ⚠️ A few practical tips: None of these spots require an extra ticket; you can find them by walking along the edge of the square without needing to detour through the central tourist area. If you want to watch the sunset, I recommend the West Wing boardwalk. When the cross-sea bridge lights up in the evening, the combination of the sunset glow and the string of lights is incredibly photogenic. It's windier by the sea than in the city, so even on a sunny day, I recommend bringing a light jacket. Wear comfortable shoes so you won't get tired walking on the boardwalk. The rocky area is only accessible at low tide. Check the tide times before you go, and be careful not to walk too far out to avoid getting trapped by the rising tide. I originally thought Xinghai Square was just a standard tourist trap, but I never expected it to hide so many quiet little corners. There's no need to rush; just wandering around slowly for an afternoon is the true essence of Dalian's coastal romance✨ Next time you visit, don't just crowd into the fountain area—these hidden gems are definitely worth exploring.

If you're vacationing in Dalian, you must spend at least one night at the Four Seasons Hotel Dalian. As the first Four Seasons in Northeast China, it is truly the pinnacle of luxury hotels. Dalian Haichang Oriental Water City

I came here because of its reputation, and the environment is indeed very nice. It's quite close to the beach and has parking. There are many European-style buildings inside, some are restaurants, some are creative shops, some are photography studios, and there are also banks, theaters, art galleries, etc. If you just want to see the scenery, a stroll around would take one or two hours, depending heavily on the weather; good sunshine makes for great photos. The creative shops are also worth browsing. It's a very relaxing place, but I didn't have time to visit anything else. Judging from the overall design, the night view should be amazing. If you want to take a small boat, just let them know in advance, otherwise the driver won't point out the camera location, and the photos won't be good.

Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park

I went during the National Day holiday this year, and there were definitely more activities and more people than when I went in winter. It wasn't as deserted as I expected. I'll definitely go when it's more crowded next time, it'll be so lively! Haha.

Dalian Forest Zoo

Dalian Zoo is a lot of fun! There are many small animals inside. You'll need a good day to see everything. I suggest bringing some food; there are restaurants inside the park that aren't too expensive, including fast food chains like burgers and Mixue Ice Cream. If your child is very young, you'll need a stroller, otherwise the zoo is quite large and it will be tiring for both the child and the parent. Overall, it was a great trip, and I had a very happy one.

Dalian Sunasia Ocean World

The show was quite entertaining, but overall it was geared towards young children, making it more suitable for elementary school students and younger. Adults might find it a bit boring. The overall tour flow was quite good, as it's a one-way street and you can see everything, but the variety of animals wasn't that extensive, with many overlapping species. The animals in the Galaxy Pavilion and the Polar Pavilion were similar, just with different decor.

Xinghaiwan Scenic Area

Xinghai Bay has become a family paradise! Dad took the child to fly a kite, and mom and grandma took a walk in the square. My brother and I found a milk tea shop and watched the figures of our family. When the lights came on in the evening, the whole family sat on the steps and watched the night view of the bridge. The child leaned on the old man's arms, feeling so warm that he didn't want to leave.

Bangchui Island

Bangchui Island in Dalian was once a summer resort, but now only clear waters and strange rocks remain; the tide embraces the golden sands, the forests are filled with birdsong, and a leisurely stroll is like entering a painting. Climbing the wooden boardwalk on the mountainside offers even more beautiful views.

Xinghai Square

Xinghai Square truly lives up to its reputation as a Dalian landmark, offering a grand and expansive view overlooking the entire azure bay. The giant century-old city sculpture and flocks of white doves are particularly distinctive, making for a delightful evening stroll with the sea breeze. In the distance, the cross-sea bridge and Lotus Hill are framed together, creating a perfect backdrop for photos. The square's spacious walkways are ideal for cycling or leisurely walks, and the sunset paints the sea with breathtaking colors. With comprehensive amenities nearby and a variety of restaurants and attractions, it offers excellent value for money and is a popular destination for both tourists and locals – a must-visit in Dalian.

Dalian Haichang Discoveryland Theme Park

The Ferris wheel isn't great at night, but it's quite nice during the day. It's an old amusement park; the roller coaster and Cobra ride seats are peeling. The Ferris wheel and drop tower, which opened 26 years ago, are pretty good. The Hollywood Theater is also quite nice. The evening shows and fireworks are spectacular.

Fisherman's Wharf

Dalian Fisherman's Wharf covers an area of nearly 60,000 square meters and boasts a 1,768-meter-long coastline. Natural beaches are located on its west and southeast corners, while a 280-meter-long pier stretches along its south side. The concept of Fisherman's Wharf originates from Europe and America, representing a nostalgic European-style leisure and a unique port city culture. The wharf is a comprehensive and distinctive themed commercial area integrating sightseeing, entertainment, culture, dining, shopping, and vacationing.

Dalian Golden Pebble Beach National Tourism Resort

It's definitely worth experiencing the feeling of being between the mountains and the sea. The scenic area is well-designed, with boardwalks, stone steps, and karst caves formed over hundreds of millions of years. You can also get close to the sea and feed seagulls on the beach. There are several rest areas, and the prices are reasonable for a scenic area.
