Brief Guide

Shenyang, the capital and largest city of Liaoning Province, gives visitors an impression of great change and modernizing resilience. As the former base of the Imperial City Wall, Shenyang bore witness to the rise of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The last four hundred years have left the people of Shenyang with a royal palace, two imperial tombs and numerous royal architectural remains. The colonnades of The Shenyang Palace Museum resemble Beijing’s Forbidden City and still give voice to the secret history of the court. Every brick in Marshal Zhang’s Mansion depicts the history of the Warlord Era. The 9.18 Historical Museum tells the story of the pain of that humiliation (also known as the Manchurian Invasion). Shengjing, as it was once known, now has more of a modern feeling. It is a major industrial center and transportation hub for Northeast Asia. The bustle and neon of Zhongjie Street, the lofty television towers, and the lively Liu Laogen Grand Stage all bear witness to the ever-changing nature of Shenyang.

Food Guide

The culinary delights of Shenyang blend Northeastern flavors, featuring dishes from ancient royal cuisine like Xueyi Dousha, to popular street food including fried chicken ribs, smoked meat pancakes, and Da La Pi. Each dish showcases the unique local flair and the city’s rich cultural heritage, offering an enticing and aromatic gastronomic experience.

A popular dish from the Qing Dynasty's royal feasts, these delicacies consist of a supple, airy egg white coating encasing a sweet bean paste. Continuously tossed in the pan, they are transformed into round, cotton-like morsels. Best served hot and dipped in white sugar, their tender, fluffy texture is reminiscent of a traditional Chinese soufflé.

The locally renowned sweet-flavored fried chicken is a must-try delicacy. The chicken racks, marinated in a secret blend of spices, are deep-fried to a perfect golden brown, undergoing a magnificent transformation. The slight hint of spice and rich oiliness make it irresistibly delicious, especially when accompanied by a chilled beer.

In Shenyang, the Jilin smoked pork flatbread is a celebrated northern-style snack. The pork undergoes boiling before being smoked, then it’s sliced thickly and served with a deep crimson hue that gleams enticingly, accompanied by a delightful smoky scent. It’s encased within a freshly baked flatbread that’s crispy on the exterior and soft inside, made with pig fat and flour, creating a robust and savory delight.

Beloved in Northeast China, this noodle salad is celebrated for its delightful chewiness and refreshing flavor. Traditionally, the dish uses cassava starch noodles, which are cooked, chilled, and sliced into strips. These supple noodles are tossed with bean sprouts, cucumber shreds, wood ear mushrooms, and cilantro. To dress the salad, a blend of minced garlic, aromatic vinegar, salt, and sesame oil is used. The final result is a chewy, crisp, and flavorful dish that's irresistibly simple and tasty.

The Ultimate Guide to Hiking Laopingtuo in Benxi | The "Little Altay" of Liaoning: Alpine Meadows + Layered Mountains, Plus a One-Day Itinerary with Cold Spring Location: Benxi Manchu — traveler post in Shenyang

The Ultimate Guide to Hiking Laopingtuo in Benxi | The "Little Altay" of Liaoning: Alpine Meadows + Layered Mountains, Plus a One-Day Itinerary with Cold Spring Location: Benxi Manchu

The Ultimate Guide to Hiking Laopingtuo in Benxi | The "Little Altay" of Liaoning: Alpine Meadows + Layered Mountains, Plus a One-Day Itinerary with Cold Spring 📍Location: Yuanjiabuzi Village, Caohezhang Town, Benxi Manchu Autonomous County 🎫Admission: Free | 🅿️Parking: Free parking in open spaces in the village near the trailhead ⛰️Elevation: The main peak, Ertuo, is approximately 1,009 meters high ⏱Duration: Classic loop is 10–12 km with a cumulative elevation gain of 600–700 meters; takes 5–6 hours including photo stops and breaks; moderate-intensity wild trail ✅Attraction Overview Laopingtuo is known by outdoor enthusiasts as the "Little Altay of Liaoning." It is an untouched, wild mountain range that is part of the Changbai Mountains. It is not a commercialized scenic area, so there are no man-made steps, shops, or signage. The entire route traverses dense forests and mountain streams. Upon reaching the summit, you will encounter a series of alpine meadows known as Yituo (First Hump), Ertuo (Second Hump), and Santuo (Third Hump). Standing on the ridge, you get a 360° panoramic view of rolling mountains stretching into the distance, often with cattle and horses grazing leisurely on the meadows. There are wildflowers on the slopes in spring and lush green grass in midsummer. The best time to visit is from late September to mid-October, when the autumn colors are at their peak—the colorful forests paired with golden meadows make for incredible photos. 🚗Transportation Guide Self-driving (Highly recommended) Navigation search: Benxi Laopingtuo (Yuanjiabuzi Village) · From Shenyang: About a 2-hour drive · From Benxi Xiaoshi: About 40 minutes The final stretch is a rural mountain road with many curves; please slow down when passing other vehicles. Private cars cannot drive all the way to the meadows. For those with lower stamina, you can contact local villagers to take a pickup truck to the first meadow for 20 yuan/person, which significantly reduces the climbing distance (optional). Public transportation is not available, so it is not recommended. 🗺Hiking Route Planning (Classic loop, no backtracking) 1. Meet at the parking lot in Yuanjiabuzi Village, organize your gear, and enter the mountain along the dirt road in the valley. The path follows a stream through a mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest, which provides shade. 2. Continue a gentle ascent for about 1.5 hours to reach Yituo (the first meadow). The view opens up here, making it a great spot for a short break and photos. 3. Continue toward the ridge to reach Ertuo (the highest point of the main peak). This is the core viewing platform, offering a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and a perfect spot for epic photos. 4. Pass through the Santuo meadows in sequence, walking along the ridge to enjoy the scenery and the grazing cattle and horses, then begin a slow descent. 5. Follow the gravel path through the forest back to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain to complete the loop. ✨Energy-saving option: Turn back after reaching the first meadow (Yituo). The total trip takes about 3 hours, which is suitable for those with average fitness who just want to see the meadow scenery without completing the full loop. 📸Best Photo Spots 1. Ertuo Main Peak: 360° panoramic layered mountains. The top choice for photos of sea clouds and distant mountains—this is where you can capture those sweeping panoramic shots. 2. Yituo Meadow: A flat, expansive lawn with cattle and horses. Perfect for portraits and wide-angle landscape shots. 3. Ridge Trail: Combines colorful forests and distant mountains, offering the best autumn atmosphere. 🗺Golden One-Day Itinerary (Highly recommended) Morning: Hike Laopingtuo (5–6 hours, enjoy alpine meadows and layered mountains) Lunch: Farmhouse restaurant in Caohezhang Town to taste Benxi lamb soup, wild mountain vegetables, and rainbow trout Afternoon: Liaodong's First Cold Spring. Stop by on your way down to cool off in the icy spring water and relieve hiking fatigue. This route ensures you don't have to backtrack. 🎒Essential Gear List 1. Footwear & Clothing: Non-slip, durable hiking shoes and long pants (to protect against branches and insects). The wind is strong at the summit, so a light windbreaker or jacket is a must, as there is a significant temperature difference between day and night. 2. Tools: Hiking poles (to protect your knees, essential for the descent); download the offline trail map for Laopingtuo on the Two Steps (Liangbulu) app in advance, as mobile signal is very weak once you enter the mountains. 3. Supplies: At least 2L of drinking water per person and trail food (bread, energy bars, nuts). There are no shops on the mountain. 4. Other: Trash bags (Leave No Trace, take all trash with you), sun hat, mosquito repellent, and a simple first-aid kit. It is recommended to bring a headlamp to prevent being caught in the dark if the descent takes longer than expected. ⚠️Important Safety Tips 1. This is a wild mountain, not a scenic area, and there is no staff for rescue. Solo hiking is not recommended; try to travel with a partner. Cancel your trip if the weather is bad (heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms). The mountain paths become muddy and slippery after rain, making it very easy to fall. 2. There are no trail markers. Strictly follow the offline trail map and do not deviate from the main path to avoid getting lost. 3. The cattle and horses on the meadows are free-roaming livestock. Observe them from a distance; do not approach, feed, or chase them to avoid injury. 4. The mountains are dry in autumn. Open flames are strictly prohibited throughout the area; do not start fires in the wild. 5. The gravel path on the descent puts a lot of pressure on the knees; slow down and do not run. 6. Know your limits. Do not push yourself to complete the full loop if you lack the stamina; choose the shorter route and turn back. Safety first.

Shenyang trip | Staying at Shenyang Station X Hotel, visiting the century-old East Pagoda, a soul-soothing journey through an ancient city — traveler post in Shenyang

Shenyang trip | Staying at Shenyang Station X Hotel, visiting the century-old East Pagoda, a soul-soothing journey through an ancient city

For this short trip to Shenyang, I chose to stay at the Shenyang Station X Hotel. The overall experience exceeded my expectations and provided a comfortable base for my visit to the East Pagoda. I sincerely recommend it to friends who want to take a slow-paced trip to Shenyang. The hotel is right near Shenyang Station, making transportation very convenient. I was able to reach it shortly after getting off the train and dragging my luggage. Check-in was efficient, and the front desk staff were friendly and patiently explained the room facilities, while also thoughtfully recommending travel routes. Walking into the room, the first thing I noticed was how clean and fresh it was, with no unpleasant odors. The bedding was soft, the pillow height was just right, and after a day of rushing around, I could relax as soon as I lay down. The room had good lighting, the bathroom featured dry/wet separation, the hot water was stable, and the toiletries were complete. The public areas were tidy and quiet, the overall environment was simple and elegant, the soundproofing was effective, and I wasn't disturbed while resting at night. There is a bus stop right outside, so whether you're heading to Taiyuan Street for food or to the East Pagoda, getting around is worry-free. It's a one-stop solution for dining, accommodation, and transportation. After resting, I set off for the East Pagoda Huguo Yongguang Temple, commonly known as the East Pagoda. As one of the four pagodas of Shengjing, it was built in the eighth year of the Chongde reign of the Qing Dynasty. The former Shengjing Eight Views site, "East Pagoda Spring Plowing," is located here, preserving Shenyang's rich historical heritage. Once you step into the park, the noise is instantly shut out. Red walls paired with the white Tibetan-style ancient pagoda create a palpable rustic atmosphere, and every casual shot makes for a stunning photo with an ancient vibe. The pagoda body is exquisitely carved, with wind chimes hanging from the top; when a breeze blows, you can faintly hear the crisp sound of bells. Walking slowly along the path, you can visit the Hundred Blessings Wall, collect special stamps at the cultural and creative shop, and take home a travel souvenir from Shenyang. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin Hall has a sutra copying area; calming down to write is exceptionally peaceful. When you're tired of walking, you can try the vegetarian noodles in the temple, which are fresh, light, and offer great value. There are also cute stray cats strolling leisurely in the courtyard, adding a lively, down-to-earth feel. Without the crowds, it's perfect for a slow stroll, taking photos, and praying for blessings, allowing you to feel the tranquility of the century-old pagoda. It's very comfortable to spend 2 or 3 hours here. After finishing at the East Pagoda, I returned to the hotel, reminiscing about the peace brought by the ancient pagoda all the way. This trip, the hotel was comfortable and reassuring, the attractions were full of heritage, and the whole journey was relaxed and fulfilling. The hotel location is superior, hygiene is in place, and service is thoughtful; the East Pagoda has both a sense of history and is a great photo spot, is open for free, and is very suitable for tourists who like cultural relics and quiet photography. If you come to Shenyang, want to find convenient accommodation, and want to avoid the crowds to visit lesser-known historical sites, the Shenyang Station X Hotel combined with the East Pagoda route is highly recommended. This stay and tour were very satisfactory throughout. Next time I come to Shenyang, I will choose this hotel again, and I also recommend it to all friends traveling to Shenyang.

Don't just book anywhere when visiting Shenyang! Found a hidden gem of a hotel near the North Station for your trip

I stayed at the SERENDIPIA Hotel during my trip to Shenyang 🥂, and it was a pleasant surprise. The location is incredibly convenient. It's just a short walk to the Qingnian Street Metro Station, and getting to Shenyang North Station by taxi is quick. Traveling to Zhongjie and the Imperial Palace is easy, so dragging luggage around wasn't tiring at all. The lobby is simple and elegant, with a great atmosphere for photos. The room is spacious and features smart home controls. The mattress is soft and supportive, making it incredibly relaxing to lie down after a long day of travel. The bathroom has a dry/wet separation and was spotless. The soundproofing is good, ensuring a very quiet night's sleep 🌙. The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of options, including authentic Northeast snacks. The 24-hour self-service laundry and gym are fully equipped, which is especially useful for long trips. The front desk staff were friendly, and the check-in process was quick and efficient. Whether you're a tourist visiting the city or here for a short business trip, this hotel is a great choice. I'll definitely make it my top pick next time I'm in Shenyang.

Gu Nai Hotel (Shenyang Qingnian Street MixC Mall) can be added to your accommodation shortlist, and you can confirm your travel arrangements based on your own itinerary. The city lights outside the guest room window create a comfortable contrast with the dark gray interior. A gray outfit paired with a light-colored hat creates a focal point without needing extra accessories. What I want to leave behind is not just a shopping list, but that moment of finally slowing down while standing by the window after a day of shopping. A photogenic, off-the-beaten-path trip to Shenyang | Stay at Shenyang Station X Hotel and visit the Northeast Theological Seminary hidden in the forest

I have always wanted to find a place with few people and a great atmosphere for photos. After seeing many recommendations for the Northeast Theological Seminary, I planned this short trip to Shenyang. I booked the Shenyang Station X Hotel directly. It turned out to be a very wise choice, perfect for photography enthusiasts and those on a light weekend getaway! I arrived at Shenyang Station by train and found the Shenyang Station X Hotel quickly after exiting. It is within easy walking distance, so I didn't have to drag my luggage for a long time—a huge relief for travelers arriving by high-speed rail or train. Upon entering the hotel, my first impression was that the overall environment was clean and elegant, without any noise or chaos. The public areas are decorated in a simple, stylish way with soft lighting, which immediately eased the fatigue of my journey. The front desk staff were warm and polite, the check-in process was fast with no tedious waiting, and they even thoughtfully introduced me to the best way to get to the Northeast Theological Seminary. The attention to detail was spot on. Opening the door to the room, it exceeded my expectations. The room had great natural light, was spacious and airy, and was very clean. The bedding was soft and fresh, making it incredibly relaxing to lie down. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area, toiletries were fully stocked, and the hot water was consistent. The soundproofing deserves praise; although it is near Shenyang Station, once the door was closed, I could barely hear the traffic or noise outside, allowing for a restful sleep. The amenities were complete, the Wi-Fi was fast, and it was convenient for charging my phone and editing photos. For us, needing to wake up early the next day to visit attractions, having a quiet and comfortable place to stay was truly essential. After a night of rest, we set off early the next morning for our destination: the Northeast Theological Seminary, often called the "Hogwarts of Shenyang." It is hidden among the forests near Qipanshan. The Gothic-style castle with its spires is surrounded by layers of green trees, and the red brick building covered in creeping vines looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale. It is also a super popular, niche, and free spot in Shenyang. A quick note: the interior of the building is not open to the public, but taking photos on the surrounding forest trails is more than enough to get great shots. There is no admission fee, parking is free if you drive, and you can also take bus route 168 to Shangmu Station and walk there. I recommend coming on a sunny day after 3:00 PM when the light is soft—it is the golden hour for photography. Walking slowly along the forest path, the tall trees interweave, and sunlight filters through the leaves, creating a healing Tyndall effect. The popular vine corridor, tree hole shapes, and castle spires are all hot photo spots. Wear solid or light-colored clothing, and every shot will have a cinematic feel. You don't need to deliberately find angles; the raw photos look great. If you get tired, there is a coffee shop nearby where you can order a drink, sit in the forest, and just relax, listening to the rustling of the wind in the leaves. It is a great way to get away from the city noise and soak in the atmosphere. A leisurely 1–2 hour stroll is just right. If you have enough energy, you can also stop by the nearby Huaxia Folk Culture Village to experience a different kind of pastoral charm. We returned in the evening and stayed at the Shenyang Station X Hotel again. After a busy day, the thing I looked forward to most was returning to a comfortable room. The hotel's prime location really stood out again; whether driving or taking a taxi back to the city center, it was very smooth. We didn't have to rush to catch our train, and we didn't waste time on the road. Many friends traveling to Shenyang flock to popular spots like the Imperial Palace and Zhongjie. If you are tired of the crowds, I highly recommend this route: stay at the Shenyang Station X Hotel and take some time to visit the Northeast Theological Seminary to encounter the forest castle. It is convenient for travel, the accommodation is comfortable and worry-free, and the attraction is niche and unique. It is perfect for friends traveling together, couples, or solo travelers who enjoy quiet photography. A comfortable trip is much easier when you choose the right place to stay. Shenyang Station X Hotel is travel-friendly, quiet, and comfortable. It is the perfect base for exploring niche attractions in eastern Shenyang. I will definitely choose to stay here again next time I am in Shenyang!

Where to spend your weekend in Shenyang | A quiet downtown hotel for a relaxing short getaway

In the vibrant city of Shenyang, there is a gentle corner tucked away deep in the bustling city, yet set back from the street: the Shenyang Haoze Gallery Garden Family Hotel. When you arrive with your children and luggage, passing through the city's hustle and bustle, and turn onto that quiet little road, the moment you push open the door, it feels as if the whole world has slowed down. There is no noise from traffic, no distraction from neon lights—just a quiet sanctuary for you and your children, like a haven on your journey, gently catching all your fatigue and expectations. You know that feeling, right? When you travel with kids, the biggest fear is staying somewhere too noisy, not sleeping well, the kids acting up, and feeling stressed. But at Haoze Gallery, all of this is gently resolved. It’s not on the main street, yet it’s in the heart of the city—close to the city's excitement, and even closer to a peaceful night's sleep. During the day, you can take your kids to explore the vibrancy and delicious food of Shenyang, and at night, returning here feels like coming home to a place surrounded by a garden. Your children can roll around on the soft beds while you brew a cup of tea by the window, watching the swaying tree shadows outside, feeling a sense of grounded happiness. Speaking of delicious food, we have to mention the Tawan Xingshun Night Market nearby, a place you won't want to leave. Just an 8-minute drive from the hotel, you can dive straight into that steaming, fragrant food paradise. The sizzling sound of skewers, the sweet aroma of roasted chestnuts, the smiling faces of children holding cotton candy, and all those snacks—both familiar and new—are calling out to you. "Delicious and fun"—that’s no exaggeration. You can take your kids and eat your way from one end of the street to the other, enjoy the lively night market atmosphere, and then leisurely return to the hotel, take a hot shower, and crawl into a soft bed. Nights like these are the most precious memories of any trip. And in the morning, when the first rays of sunlight stream through the gaps in the curtains, you won't be woken up by an alarm clock, but by a natural, gentle brightness. The hotel's breakfast is served from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM—a full four hours—giving you enough time to wake up naturally, letting the kids sleep in a bit, and allowing you to wash up without rushing before walking hand-in-hand into the restaurant. The aroma of breakfast greets you, with hot porridge, fluffy bread, fresh fruit, and the yogurt and cereal that kids love. Sitting by the window, watching your child eat with a messy face, you can't help but laugh out loud. Mornings like this—no rushing, no stress—are exactly what a vacation should be. This is what the Shenyang Haoze Gallery Garden Family Hotel wants to offer you—not just a cold, impersonal room, but a warm, memorable experience. It understands the challenges of traveling with children, the dilemma of wanting peace without being far from the action, and your hope to provide your child with a restful sleep and a relaxed breakfast while on the road. It’s not flashy or noisy, but through every detail, it tells you: You’re here, so just relax and stay. So, don't hesitate any longer. Bring your children, bring your expectations, and come to the Shenyang Haoze Gallery Garden Family Hotel. Spend your day eating and exploring at the Tawan Xingshun Night Market, and return to this quiet sanctuary at night to get a good night's sleep and enjoy a slow breakfast. Marshal Zhang's Mansion Museum

Really amazing location. It was extremely busy given it was a holiday in China, so the houses were completely packed. But it was such a cool experience to be able to walk the same halls that such an important historical figure walked !

Shenyang Imperial Palace

The Shenyang Imperial Palace is an amazingly beautiful and interesting place to visit! I was surprised that eventhough I went there during the National Holiday, it wasn't as crowded as I would expect. It's fantastically preserved, without feeling fake and without souvenir or food stands every 5 steps. It was the cherry on top of my Shenyang trip!

Shenyang Fangcheng Cultural Tourism Area

Visiting Shenyang's Fangcheng District is like opening a living history book. Along the bluestone pavement, the red walls of the Forbidden City contrast with the gray tiles of the hutongs, and the texture of the old buildings holds stories of the ages. There's no sense of isolation from a scenic area here; the vibrant atmosphere of Toutiao Hutong and the aroma of time-honored shops wash over you. Young people can immerse themselves in the plot of "Ban Ling Mi Jing" or immerse themselves in the adventure of "Qin Chao Awakening," while older generations can carefully appreciate the antiques of the Khan's Palace. Here, the past and the present seamlessly blend, allowing you to experience both history and modernity in a day, creating a truly vibrant experience.

Zhongjie Street

Zhongjie Street is quite long with many side streets, lined with shops and restaurants, and bustling with pedestrians. It seems well worth a visit and is a landmark pedestrian street in Shenyang. It's convenient to get anywhere from Zhongjie Street, but during my few days in Shenyang, I only spent a relatively short time shopping there. I mainly explored other areas outside of Zhongjie Street. It was a bit of a regret that I treated Zhongjie Street primarily as a transportation hub. Next time I visit Shenyang, I'll definitely explore it more. If I hadn't been in a rush, I could have spent more time there. I mainly visited the Forbidden City, Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence, and the Dadong Food Market on Zhongjie Street.

Liu Laogen Stage

The performance at Liu Laogen Grand Stage is a non-stop feast of Northeastern Chinese culture. Five different performers take turns on stage, showcasing their handkerchief twirling, musical instrument skills, and other talents, interspersed with relatable stand-up comedy and adapted songs—the jokes are so plentiful they'll keep you laughing non-stop. The actors are incredibly interactive; a few words of authentic Northeastern dialect instantly create a connection, and those in the front rows might even be invited on stage to participate. The performance blends traditional Errenzhuan (a traditional folk art form) with modern flair, creating a lively and down-to-earth experience. You'll leave with your hands red from clapping, your mind filled with lingering laughter.
