Qishi Village Chenqi School, Yizhang, Hunan

The former site of the Yizhang County Committee of the Communist Party of China, also known as the "Common People's Night School," served as an academy during the Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China period, originally called "Chenqi Academy" and later renamed "Chenqi School." Built in 1846 (the 26th year of the Daoguang reign in the Qing Dynasty), it features a herringbone wooden beam structure, a small blue-tiled hipped roof, and a two-story brick-and-wood construction. The front wall's top design reflects Western architectural influences, covering a land area of 286 square meters with a floor space of 769 square meters. Following the "Horse Day Incident" in May 1927, when Kuomintang reactionaries brutally suppressed and massacred Communists and revolutionary masses, plunging the county into a white terror, the Yizhang Party organization shifted from public to underground activities. In early June, the Yizhang County Committee secretly relocated here, using it as a base to establish a special Party branch, covertly expand the Party organization, and effectively support the Yizhang New Year's Uprising. On January 12, 1928, after Zhu De and Chen Yi led remnants of the Nanchang Uprising forces to launch the Yizhang New Year's Uprising with the County Committee's assistance, the revolutionary momentum surged unprecedentedly, prompting the Yizhang County Committee to move back to Yizhang County town from Qishi. As part of the Qishi Uprising historical site complex, the former site of the Yizhang County Committee—Chenqi School—was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2013 by the State Council (7th batch).
