Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle

3.4
Carlisle Castle is located in the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, in the United Kingdom, and is a medieval military structure of significant historical value. The castle was first built in 1092 by order of King William II of England, initially to strengthen border defenses. Due to its location on the border between England and Scotland, it has served an important military and strategic role for hundreds of years, enduring numerous sieges and wars, and is one of the most besieged castles in the history of the United Kingdom. Carlisle Castle is constructed primarily of sandstone, and its surviving structures include the keep, gatehouse, defensive walls, and inner courtyards, with repairs and renovations over the centuries giving it a multi-period architectural style. Among these, the keep is one of the castle's most iconic structures, having served as a defensive core and an important living space. In the 16th century, the castle's defensive system was further strengthened to adapt to the development of artillery technology, allowing it to continue to serve its military function.Carlisle · 755m from downtown

Edinburgh Castle stands majestically on the volcanic cliffs above the Royal Mile, guarding Scotland for centuries—it once served as a royal residence, military fortress, and prison. Today, you can stand at the exact spot where the One O'Clock Gun fires, stroll through St. Margaret's Chapel, and explore the National War Museum on the west side, which showcases centuries of Scottish military history through uniforms, medals, and weapons, alongside the Crown Jewels displayed beside the Stone of Destiny. The castle esplanade echoes with the sound of bagpipes, the Crown's history predates the Act of Union, and the breathtaking views of the Firth of Forth stretch out before you. This historic British landmark still commands awe from people across the island.United Kingdom · Edinburgh

A large gift shop in Gretna Green. Many of the items are in line with the theme of the town of runaway marriages. The blacksmith's anvil is used for weddings, the horseshoes strung together the entrance arch, and the wedding rings made by the blacksmith are eye-catching. There are also many Scottish-style gifts. Even if you don't buy them, it's interesting to just look at them. There are discounts for purchases over a certain amount.

It's completely not worth going. It's a tiny place with one toilet, two gift shops, and one restaurant. You can walk through it in ten minutes, but the tour guide made us stay there for an hour. It's terrible and a waste of time.

The magnificent castle embodies the history, culture, and glory of Scotland. The visitor pathways and signage were well-organized, and there was even an audio guide in Mandarin, which allowed tourists like us who don't speak English to gain a deeper understanding of the castle. The staff at the visitor center were warm and attentive, and the police officers in the square outside the castle were friendly and responsible, helping me find my lost wife.
