The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is located along the main branch of the Lancang River, west of Dujiangyan City. It was constructed in the Qin dynasty around 256 BC by Li Bing, Prefecture Chief of Shu County, and his son. It is one of the few ancient Chinese water conservancy projects that has remained preserved and intact. The project consists of three primary works—Yuzui Diverting Embankment, the Feishayan Spillway, and the Baopingkou Water Inlet, and two secondary works which include the Baizhangdi (the thousand-feet dam) and Renzidi (the y-shaped dam). They divide the Yongjiang River into an outer and an inner branch, the former of which is used to divert floods and the latter for irrigation. This has allowed the Western Sichuan plateau to become "the land of abundance" as we now know it.Dujiangyan · 3.9 km from downtown

Mount Qingcheng

34k reviews
Mount Qingcheng has long been praised as "Tranquil Paradise under Heaven," with its peaks encircling like city walls—hence the name. Legend says Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty established Taoism here in a thatched hut, making it the ancestral home of Celestial Master Taoism, where temple incense still burns today. The mountain divides into front and back sections: the front features Taoist temples and cultural relics, commonly referred to as "Mount Qingcheng" by most travelers; the back excels in natural landscapes like pools, waterfalls, streams, and gorges, making it ideal for hiking and summer retreats. The highlights of Qianshan are concentrated. Starting from Jianfu Palace beside the mountain gate, follow the ancient stone steps upward past Natural Picture, Tianshi Cave, Chaoyang Cave, and Shangqing Palace, with the summit's Laojun Pavilion as the final vantage point. Tianshi Cave, also called Changdao Temple, is one of the mountain's largest Taoist complexes—its front courtyard holds a millennium-old ginkgo tree allegedly planted by Zhang Daoling, while the cliffside Ink-throwing Trough behind is said to be where the celestial master drew mountains with vermilion ink. Painting master Zhang Daqian once resided at Shangqing Palace, styling himself "Guest of Qingcheng." At the mountain's base, Yuecheng Lake's mirror-like waters add ethereal beauty to the lush greenery. The rear mountain entrance is the quaint Tai'an ancient town. From here, the trails connect Wulong gully and Feiquan gully into a loop, with views like Misty spring triple pools, Double spring water curtain cave, and Hundred-zhang long bridge accompanied by the sounds of water and shaded woods. The Longyin gorge walkway built along cliffs overlooks rushing streams below, making it a dedicated hiking route. The mountain stays pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The front mountain and back mountain entrances are not connected, usually requiring separate itineraries. Most 1-day tours choose one of the two. The front mountain's main temples can be visited in half a day, while the back mountain loop is longer and requires reserving most of a day. Travelers wishing to see the sunrise often ascend the mountain a day early, staying overnight at mountain temples for convenient morning viewing.Dujiangyan · 12.3 km from downtown

Qingcheng Houshan is located near Qingcheng and features numerous interesting sites throughout its foothills, including Tai'An Ancient Town and Tai'An Temple. The fragrant clouds of incense in Qingcheng Houshan gently fill the air, yet the surroundings are clear and pure. The region is quiet and tranquil. This area is especially suitable for leisurely travel by foot. When compared to Qingcheng, this is a softer, gentler experience. An adventurous traveler will find a small farmhouse or charming bed and breakfast to spend a day or two and breathe in the fresh mountain air while exhaling the stress of city living. It is a quiet , quaint, comfortable area.Dujiangyan · 16.6 km from downtown

South Bridge is a replica covered bridge spanning the inner river of theMinjiang River. One end connects to the streets of the Ancient Town of Guan County, while the other is adjacent to the entrance of the Dujiangyan Scenic Area, making it easy to cross when traveling between the two. It was first built during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty and was originally named "Puji Bridge." It was commissioned by the then-magistrate of Guan County using funds saved from the major renovation ofDujiangyan. After being repeatedly damaged by floods and wars, it was rebuilt in 1959 and named "South Bridge." The 1979 renovation established its current layout, turning the old saying about old Guan County—"there is no road out of the South Gate"—into history. The bridge features a pailou-style, triple-eaved gate design, with ridge ornaments, mythical beasts, and figures sculpted on the barrel-tiled roof. The wood carvings, dragon heads, and hanging eaves at the bridgeheads are all gilded and painted, and the ceiling inside the corridor is covered with colorful paintings. The entire bridge is intricately carved and painted, earning it the reputation of a "painted pavilion on the water" and a "viewing platform." Leaning against the railing, you can watch the inner river water rushing out fromBaopingkou, with the roar of the water and the river breeze blowing in your face. After nightfall, South Bridge takes on a new look: the lights turn on, and the river surface shimmers with flowing, deep blue light, known as "blue tears." This contrasts beautifully with the silhouette of the covered bridge and is a popular sight in the city at night.Dujiangyan · 3.1 km from downtown

The Qingcheng Mountain Passenger Cableway is an aerial sightseeing route connecting the mountain base to the summit. Spanning approximately 2.1 km, the cable car ride takes about 8 minutes. Visitors board comfortable four-seater cable cars that gradually ascend, gliding above Qingchengshan's lush forests. As the elevation increases, panoramic views unfold, revealing the mountain's magnificent landscapes. During the journey, visitors can admire Qingchengshan's unique geological features from above. The verdant rolling hills dotted with ancient Taoist temples create a breathtaking landscape painting. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in pink and white hues across the mountains. Summer brings lush greenery covering every slope. Autumn transforms the forests into a vibrant tapestry of colors. When winter snow arrives, the scenery turns into a silver wonderland like a fairy tale. The cable car offers not just spectacular views but also serves as a window into Qingcheng Mountain's rich history and culture. Multiple viewing platforms are set up along the way, allowing visitors to pause and admire the scenery while learning about the Taoist culture and natural ecosystem of Qingcheng Mountain. Staff members will guide visitors through the attractions and historical stories along the route, enriching the tour experience. The Qingcheng Mountain Passenger Cableway not only provides a convenient way to ascend the mountain but also creates a unique sightseeing experience. Looking for some fresh air this weekend, a friend recommended the front of Qingcheng Mountain. To be honest, I didn't have high expectations beforehand, thinking it would just be a hike and temple visit. But after walking around, I immediately added it to my "must-visit every year" list. Entering through the mountain gate, the first impression was "green." Towering ancient trees lined both sides of the stone path, the air was damp and fragrant with the scent of grass and trees. The path was gently paved, the steps weren't steep, and walking and stopping wasn't tiring at all, especially friendly to someone like me who doesn't exercise regularly. Not far along, I reached Tianshi Cave. The branches of an ancient ginkgo tree shaded most of the courtyard. An old Taoist priest sitting under the tree, drinking tea, nodded to me, and at that moment, I suddenly felt calm. Sitting on the stone steps, listening to the sound of the wind rustling through the pine forest for a while, all the chaotic thoughts in my mind cleared away. Further up to Shangqing Palace, the platform in front overlooks the front of the mountain. Clouds and mist rise from the valleys, making the mountain peaks appear and disappear, truly giving it an ethereal feel. I met a kind Taoist priest who told me a story about Zhang Tianshi and recommended I try the tea brewed with mountain spring water. That warm, welcoming attitude was far more comfortable than the standardized service at any trendy tourist spot. What touched me most about the entire mountain path was its tranquility. The sound of a stream accompanied me all the way, tinkling and melodious, like nature playing white noise. One section of the path was lined with bamboo and ferns, sunlight filtering through the leaves, making me feel as if I had stepped into a movie. On the way down, I took a ferry on Yuecheng Lake. The boatwoman hummed a tune, and the green mountains on both sides slowly receded—the feeling was indescribable. Although the summit was shrouded in fog this time, preventing me from seeing the panoramic view, it's good to leave something to look forward to; it gives me a reason to come back next time. The front of Qingcheng Mountain doesn't try to force you to climb until your legs break, nor does it try to fool you with artificial attractions. It simply offers you a peaceful green space, a cup of tea, and a quiet path. If you want to steal half a day of leisure from the fast pace of life, this is the place to go.

It truly lives up to its reputation as one of Chengdu's must-see spots; those who haven't been should definitely check it out. During the day, you can stroll around the scenic area, and in the evening, enjoy snacks near the South Bridge. The variety of trinkets and delicious food is dazzling. I recommend visiting the South Bridge at night; the lights create a stunning visual effect, the water flows rapidly below, and the overall atmosphere is magnificent. The antique architecture adds a unique touch, evoking a sense of history. The bioluminescent plankton truly lives up to its name.

Very nice ancient town to visit after visiting the Dujiangyan. There is a dining restaurant named 月光宝瓶 beside the river which offers a great view of the river. There are lots of local shops that sell the local products which is great for those that want to buy some souvenirs or local bakery pastry to bring home. We exited to 南桥 (South Bridge) to catch the high speed train to go back to our hotel, so didn't manage to catch a view of the 蓝眼泪 night lighting of the river.
