THE YELLOW RIVER TOWER

7.1
4.6/5
842 reviews
THE YELLOW RIVER TOWER is a landmark antique-style pavilion built by Lanzhou for the Yellow River. The main tower stands approx. 93 m tall with 16 floors, located at a major bend of the Yellow River in Lanzhou. It integrates Yellow River culture exhibitions, elevated viewing, and live performances. The core experience here is admiring the river from the tower. The 16th-floor "Lanzhou in the clouds" observation deck offers a panoramic view of the S-shaped river bend skirting the city and urban landscapes on both banks. At dusk when the sunset glow blankets the river, many travelers specifically choose this time to ascend the tower. Each floor houses thematically diverse exhibits: the 11th-floor Lanzhou city memory exhibition resembles a 3D photo album, narrating urban stories of the Yellow River flowing through the city; the 13th-floor features a premium Yellow River stone exhibition displaying uniquely shaped rocks polished by millennia of river erosion; the 15th-floor Lanzhou memories·light and shadow museum immersively showcases the four seasons of the "Golden City" through projections, also making it photogenic; the 14th-floor Yellow River study allows visitors to enjoy tea and books while overlooking the river, and families with children can explore the 8th-floor exhibition themed on ancient animal fossils. After nightfall, the live performance "Ode to the Yellow River·Great Lanzhou" uses the entire tower as its backdrop, projecting the Yellow River's flow and Lanzhou's urban memories onto the night-lit facade through chapters like "Origin of the great river," "Golden great city," "Folk great charm," and "Orchid great state." The neon-outlined tower reflection dancing with its watery counterpart becomes the nightlife highlight. We recommend arranging your itinerary with daytime tower visits, sunset viewing at dusk, and evening performances to fully experience THE YELLOW RIVER TOWER's essence in one trip.China · Lanzhou

The Yellow River converges with the White River in Tangke Town, Zoige County, Sichuan, forming the magnificent First Bend of The Yellow River. Here, you can admire the peculiar and spectacular natural view, making it a favorite spot for photographers. To witness the First Bend of The Yellow River, you can climb the steps or take the elevator to reach the viewing platform. The scenery from the platform will make you forget all your worries, and it's also an ideal location to watch the sunset. The winding Yellow River, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, appears exceptionally enchanting, as if "the sunset and a lone wild duck fly together, while the autumn water blends with the vast sky in one hue."China · Zoige

The Zoige Flower Lake is located in the Re'er Dam Grassland at north of the Zoige County. The shore is densely reeded and the Flower Lake is named after a small white flower in the lake. In addition, here is the place to watch the black-necked cranes, which are under special state protection. Huahu Lake is tremendous, and the submerged is an incomprehensible marsh. Under the daylight, the water surface reflects distinctive splendor and is loaded with hearts. The lake is encompassed by huge rich reeds, which are influencing with the breeze, mirroring the quietness and changes of the lake.China · Zoige

Zhuo'er Mountain is located on the northeastern side of Haibei Prefecture's Qilian County. This is a branch of the Qilian Mountains with a hilly landscape and Danxia-type landforms. Bare outcroppings of red sandstone stick up from the green vegetation of the grasslands. To either side of the mountain range lie a sea of trees, blooming canola flowers, little villages and country towns. The sight is both distinctive and beautiful. In addition to its own scenery, Zhuo'er Mountain is also a platform for visitors to view the surrounding countryside. Opposite to Niuxin Mountain, with its year-round snow-capped visage, the view from Zhuo'er's peak is vast and expansive.China · Qilian

Tiantishan Grottoes, also known as the Great Buddha Temple, is located in Dengshan Village, Zhonglu Township, approx. 50 km south of the city. Established during the Northern Liang period of the Sixteen Kingdoms in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it has a history of about 1,600 years. Tiantishan Mountain stands majestic and steep, towering into the clouds. With stone steps carved into the mountain, the rugged path winds upward like a suspended ladder, hence its name "Heavenly Ladder Mountain." Now the Tiantishan Grottoes only have 3 remaining tiers with 17 caves of varying sizes. The larger caves stand 30 m in residual height, 19 m in width, and 6 m in depth. Inside the caves, there is a 15 m tall and 10 m wide statue of Sakyamuni, flanked by six other statues including Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Virupaksha, Vaisravana, Kasyapa, and Ananda. These sculptures are vividly shaped, exuding solemn expressions and distinct appearances. The north and south walls of the cave are adorned with large murals. The south wall features a cloud-patterned azure dragon, with an elephant and sika deer in the middle section—the elephant carries glowing scriptures on its back—while the lower section depicts fierce tigers amid trees and flowers. The north wall's upper part shows another azure dragon, its middle section portrays a white horse and black tiger (with shining scriptures on the horse's back), and the lower part displays peony blossoms. The entire mural exhibits fresh brushwork, vibrant colors, majestic momentum, and lifelike imagery. The Tiantishan Grottoes are representative of China's early cave-temple complexes. In 2001, the Tiantishan Grottoes were designated as a fifth-batch national cultural heritage site. The attraction features the Tiantishan Villa and a grotto cultural relics exhibition hall.China · Wuwei

Located in the upper reaches of Liujiaxia Reservoir, on the north bank of the Yellow River in Sigouxia, southwest of Yongjing County. On the steep and dangerous red sandstone cliffs 2 kilometers long from north to south, the cave shrines are lined up one after another, and the plank roads are suspended in the air. It is magnificent and spectacular. It is one of the three largest caves in Gansu and one of the five largest caves in my country. Bingling Temple was formerly known as "Tangshu Cave", which means "ghost cave" in Qiang language. It was called "Longxing Temple" in Tang Dynasty, "Lingyan Temple" in Northern Song Dynasty, and "Bingling Temple" after the Yongle Period of Ming Dynasty. Bingling is called "Benlang" in Tibetan language, which means "one hundred thousand Buddhas". Bingling Temple Grottoes were first built in the first year of Jianhong in the Western Qin Dynasty (420 AD). Since the Sixteen Kingdoms period, it has gone through the Northern Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, with a history of more than 1,600 years. During the period when the Western Qin Dynasty built its capital in Linxia, the king personally visited the grottoes and wrote inscriptions, the originals of which are still preserved on the rock walls. From the time the grottoes were carved in 420 AD to the Song Dynasty, the grottoes had a great influence on Han Buddhism, Pure Land Buddhism, Huayan Buddhism and Zen Buddhism. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the Yellow School (Gelug School) of Tibetan Buddhism was introduced to Bingling Temple. Bingling Temple Grottoes, based on the inheritance of folk art from previous generations, absorbed foreign Buddhist art and created vivid sculpture and painting art with a brand-new attitude and concise approach. Its relief pagodas and Tantric murals are as famous as those of Mogao Grottoes and Maijishan Grottoes. The grottoes are divided into three parts: the upper temple, the cave ditch and the lower temple. The lower temple is more spectacular. They are distributed on a cliff 200 meters long and 60 meters high. There are 196 caves and niches in Bingling Temple Grottoes, 694 stone statues, 82 clay sculptures, and more than 900 square meters of murals. The larger Maitreya Buddha statue from the Tang Dynasty is 27 meters high, and the smaller statue is 10 centimeters high. Among them, there are 2 caves and 1 niche excavated in the Western Qin Dynasty, 8 caves and 25 niches excavated in the Northern Wei Dynasty, 2 caves in the Northern Zhou Dynasty, 2 caves in the Sui Dynasty, and 20 caves and 113 niches in the Tang Dynasty. The artistic achievements of Tang Dynasty works were quite high, and there were more than 3,000 monks at that time. The ink inscription of the famous monk Faxian in the first year of Jianhong in the Western Qin Dynasty (420 AD) in this cave is the earliest chronological inscription preserved in the caves in China. It provides a mark for the dating of other ancient caves in the country and has very important historical value. The main body of the cave statues and murals is composed of the large seated Buddha in the natural cave No. 169 and all the small and medium-sized caves in the cliff face. Cave No. 169 was formerly known as Tangshu Cave, and is now called "Tianqiao Cave". It is 15 meters high, 8 meters deep and 20 meters wide. It is one of the earliest and best preserved caves in my country. There are three types of shapes in the cave: Buddha niches, stone carvings, and stone-based clay sculptures. Niche No. 171, located on the cliff of the cave, has a large seated Maitreya Buddha statue made of stone-based clay from the Tang Dynasty. It is carved against the mountain and is 27 meters high, majestic and solemn. The Western Qin "Manjusri Bodhisattva Asking about Illness" in the cave is one of the earliest Vimalakirti Sutra Transformations seen in my country. The original Cave No. 16 is now located in the Sleeping Buddha Hall opposite the cave group. The 8.6-meter-long clay sculpture of Bingling Temple Reclining Buddha is a reclining Buddha from the Northern Wei Dynasty, which has very important research value. The 25-cm-tall maid statue from the Tang Dynasty is one of the more precious existing cave statues in my country, and fully embodies the style of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Next to the cliff at the entrance of Bingling Temple stands the steep Sister Peak, surrounded by scenic spots such as the Mandarin Duck Cave and the Medicine Spring, with green mountains and clear waters, dangerous peaks and strange rocks.Yongjing · 77.3 km from Hualong

Zhongshan Bridge

Zhongshan Bridge, also known as the Lanzhou Yellow River Iron Bridge, spans the Yellow River with White Pagoda Mountain to its north and serves as a city landmark of Lanzhou. Completed in the late Qing Dynasty, it was built by the German firm Telge & Schroeter. The bridge materials, including steel beams and cement, were shipped from Germany across the ocean and then transported to Lanzhou via railway and horse-drawn carriage. It is one of the earliest permanent bridges built across the Yellow River in Lanzhou's history. It was later renamed Zhongshan Bridge in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a name that remains in use today. The bridge is over 200m long, and its gray-black steel truss structure is simple and substantial. The several arched steel ribs added above the bridge body during reinforcement in the 1950s give the entire structure a more imposing appearance. Today, the iron bridge is open only to pedestrians. Walking onto the bridge deck, you can see the Yellow River flowing slowly eastward beneath your feet. On the south bank lies the lush Binhe Road, while the north bank is home to White Pagoda Mountain Park. Climbing to the top of the mountain and looking back, the view of the iron bridge, the Yellow River, and the streetscape on both banks framed together is particularly beautiful. People often line up to take photos in front of the golden "Zhongshan Bridge" inscription at the south end of the bridge. In the pavilion on the east side of the south bridgehead stands a Ming Dynasty "General Pillar," a relic from the earlier Zhenyuan Floating Bridge that is easy to miss if you just walk past. After nightfall, the iron bridge offers a different scene: the bridge's colorful lights turn on, and the entire outline of the bridge is clearly illuminated. On one side are the bustling lights of Binhe Road, and on the other are the lights shining on the mountain, making it a great place to experience and photograph the night view of Lanzhou.China · Lanzhou

The scenic area seemed reasonably priced, and the scenery was very beautiful. However, the facilities within the area weren't particularly interesting. It's best to come here at sunset to watch the Yellow River. Overall, the experience was still worthwhile.

Online ticketing is very convenient for the attractions along the Sichuan-Gannan Grand Loop! After taking the escalator up to the mountaintop for the view, I recommend walking down the wooden boardwalk for the rest of the journey. However, the parking lot for the escalator is quite far from the entrance! There's no shuttle bus either! Ultimately, we had to split up: one person went down the stairs to get the car, and the other walked down the boardwalk. The experience was just so-so!

I was fortunate enough to encounter autumn snow in Qilian County, and the mountains of Zhuoer Mountain were blanketed in silver. Shepherds grazed their sheep on the mountaintop meadows, and the view from the observation deck was exceptionally magnificent. Transportation: Take a bus from Xining to Qilian County, then a taxi to Zhuoer Mountain Scenic Area. During the off-season, the scenic area shuttle bus is not running; you can ask the driver to take you directly to the visitor center. There are sightseeing buses within the scenic area that go directly to the summit platform. Dining: Limited options during the off-season; you'll need to find your own food. Delivery services are limited and do not deliver to guesthouses near the scenic area. Seeing the snow-capped mountains, forests, meadows, and Danxia landforms made the trip worthwhile!

The scenery at Tianti Mountain is delightful, with the Huangyang Reservoir's shimmering blue waters sparkling in the sunset. The view of the Buddha statue from the sky bridge is excellent; the setting sun casts its shadow on the Buddha, creating unique photographic opportunities. The Bingling Temple Grottoes are hailed by scholars as an "encyclopedia of Chinese grottoes," holding an irreplaceable and important position in my country's grotto art. It is not only one of the three major grottoes in Gansu, but also the first Yellow River grotto on the Silk Road.

Lanzhou Old Street is quite close to the Yellow River Tower. We walked there after visiting the Yellow River Tower. The old street area isn't small, and it feels like a newly built commercial district. In the afternoon during the off-season, there were very few people. I wonder if it will be more crowded at night? The shops are mainly restaurants, plus souvenir shops. If you're passing by, you can check it out!

As the first stop in Gannan from Linxia, it's a pretty good tourist attraction, with all three viewing platforms worth taking photos at. However, even during the off-season holidays, the shuttle buses are hard to find, so I can only imagine how ridiculous the queues will be during the summer peak season.

Before coming to Lanzhou, I had no idea what this bridge was like. I arrived around 3 PM; the sun was still blazing, and the iron railings on the bridge felt hot to the touch. This iron bridge, built in 1909, spans the Yellow River, looking sturdy yet silent. Standing on the bridge, the Yellow River surged beneath my feet, carrying the scent of silt. Speedboats darted out from under the arches, splashing up waves, and children on the bank screamed excitedly—their jubilation was unstoppable. I didn't rush up the mountain; instead, I found a seat at a teahouse under the bridge. I ordered a cup of "Sanpaotai" (a type of local tea), 15 yuan, with refills. The bamboo chair was a bit old, but just the right amount of comfortable. Several local old men around me were cracking sunflower seeds and playing chess, occasionally glancing up at the river and saying, "The water's risen again." That relaxed feeling is rare in tourist spots. You absolutely must try the Sanpaotai at the teahouse. Don't rush; sit for at least half an hour, just gazing at the river and daydreaming—that's the real deal. The cruise ticket is only a few dozen yuan, not expensive at all, and worth experiencing the view from under the bridge. Speedboats and sheepskin rafts are available on the shore; thrill-seekers can give them a try. Regarding photography: the "Zhongshan Bridge" stone monument on the south side of the bridge is a classic spot for photos. Take your time; although the sun is strong 🌞, the river breeze is very pleasant.
