The Jianshui Excursion Train departs from Lin'an in Yunnan Province. The train station and train carriages are decorated in a historical style from the Nationalist era. The beautiful scenery changes with the seasons. In spring, visitors can enjoy fields of yellow canola flowers, while in summer rice seedlings erupt into a sea of green. The rice is harvested in autumn, while winter is the best time to view the rice paddies. The train stops at Shuanglong Bridge and Xianghui Bridge, which afford magnificent views over the surrounding area.Jianshui · 1.5 km from downtown

ZHUJIA HUAYUAN is located on Hanlin Street in Jianshui County. It was a home and ancestral temple built by the Zhu Weiqing brothers in the waning years of the Qing Dynasty. Within the park, the ancestral hall, temple, living quarters and gardens are all magnificent and majestic. Visitors to the site can take the opportunity to learn about the architectural style of the southwestern residential gardens. The entirety of the Zhu Family Garden is built on a south-to-north axis and, for Jianshui, is a typical and classical combination of residential buildings and gardens. The buildings are, of course, laid out in a specific order. In the southeast corner of the Zhu Family Garden stands a Huaiyuan Hall with an exhibition on the Century-Long Rise and Fall of the Zhu Family.Jianshui · 2.1 km from downtown

Shuanglong Bridge

Shuanglong Bridge, commonly known as "Shuanglong Bridge", spans, on the west side of Jianshui Ancient City, the confluence of the Song Lo and the Tachuong River, taking its name from where the two waterways meet. This stone arch bridge was first built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty and originally had only three arches. After the river widened, fourteen more arches were added during the Daoguang era, joining the original three to form 17 arches. At the center stands a three-story pavilion with a xieshan roof and triple eaves, covered with yellow glazed tiles, with a small pavilion at each end. The main pavilion and the small pavilions are staggered along the bridge's more than 100 meters of length, and from a distance the bridge resembles a multi-storied boat moored on the water. Bridge expert Mao Yisheng once listed it as one of the country's large ancient bridges, and it has appeared on Chinese postage stamps as a representative of Yunnan's ancient bridges. Today the ancient bridge no longer carries motor vehicles, and the deck is reserved for pedestrians. You can watch the flow of the Song Lo through each arch, or walk to the bridgehead to look back at the bridge's full profile. A wetland park has been built beside the bridge, with ponds, farmland, and distant hills opening up into a broad rural scene, and at sunset the arches and the pavilion are reflected on the water. If you take the narrow-gauge sightseeing train of Jianshui Ancient City, there is aShuanglong Bridge Stationon the route where you can get off and see the ancient bridge up close.Jianshui · 4.6 km from downtown

All the buildings in the Ant Workshop follow the context of the pottery culture. The style is free and bold and full of avant-garde artistic sense. It integrates pottery-themed homestays, catering, pottery experience spaces, and artist studios, with a strong sense of life and culture. When I came to the ant workshop, I saw a white "palace". The two white palaces were built with hollow bricks, standing on the hill outside Jianshui City, holy and peaceful. Passing through the round arched doorway, only to find that there is something special inside. The entire pink space is spread out in front of you, the mottled light and shadow reflected by the sunlight through the hollow bricks, the gorgeous macaron color matching, full of romantic colors. Extending further into the palace, you will reach the exhibition hall of purple pottery art. The main colors of the building are also pink and white, and the ancient pottery art with a history of thousands of years constitutes a brand-new aesthetic. The first floor of the purple pottery art exhibition hall displays unique purple pottery art works, and the second floor is full of hand-painted works by Mr. Luo Xu, including pottery wine glasses, fruit plates, vases, etc.Jianshui · 1.7 km from downtown

Beishan Pottery Village is a purple pottery cultural estate located on a hillside in the suburbs of Jianshui, built over more than a decade by local potter Xiang Bingcheng and his team. The artisans collected hundreds of thousands of discarded jars, pots, and pottery shards from various kilns, combining them with local bluestone to construct this hillside complex covering over 80 mu. Layered stone walls and pottery jars cover the hilltop, resembling a castle from a distance. Jianshui purple pottery is ranked among the four famous potteries of China and is known for its "carving and clay-filling" decorative technique. The pottery village itself can be considered an enlarged piece of purple pottery: walls, steps, stone chairs, and benches are all inlaid with pottery jars and shards of various sizes, with rough stone contrasting against smooth, glazed surfaces. The park features a pottery museum and pottery workshops, where you can view precious purple pottery pieces from various dynasties and try your hand at pottery making. The artisans' studios are scattered throughout the castle, and you can even see signs introducing local labor models along the stone paths.Jianshui · 6 km from downtown

Chaoyang Tower, also known as Yinghui Gate, is located at the east end of Jianzhong Road in the center of Jianshui County. It is a landmark building of Jianshui Ancient City. During the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty, the Nanzhao regime built an earthen city here. In the 20th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1387), Lin'an Guard was established and the original earthen city was expanded into a brick city. In the 22nd year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1389), Chaoyang Tower was built, which was the east gate tower of Jianshui City at that time. In the early years of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, Li Dingguo captured Lin'an City. The three towers of the South Gate, West Gate and North Gate were destroyed in the war. They were repaired in the fourth year of Kangxi, but were damaged again. Now they have collapsed and disappeared. Only Chaoyang Tower at the East Gate, despite many wars and earthquakes, still stands as before, becoming a symbol of the important town in southern Yunnan. Chaoyang Tower is three stories high and has a three-eaved hip roof structure. Standing on the top of the building, you can overlook the people of Lin'an Road from the window. Chaoyang Tower and the half-moon square next to it are leisure places for local people. The morning sun rising up the city wall and the Chaoyang Tower shining brightly at night are favorite scenes for photography enthusiasts.Jianshui · 2.1 km from downtown

I booked the 2:30 PM train ride to Jianshui for my trip. Even in late October, there were still many tourists. Next to and opposite me were three international friends. Chinese and foreign tourists alike were laughing and taking pictures the whole way. Jianshui's natural scenery and historical civilization captivated all the tourists, both Chinese and foreign. At 6:30 PM, the train arrived at Jianshui Station on time. The tourists waved goodbye to the train with reluctance.

Although Jianshui Ancient City is a relatively niche tourist destination in Yunnan, this visit provided me with a unique experience! The city is clean and tidy, the tourism management is quite standardized, and the ancient city ruins are well preserved. The Zhu Family Garden, in particular, deeply impressed me with its rich local culture; it's likely a microcosm of the ancient city's heyday and definitely worth a visit. Allow ample time to savor and appreciate its beauty!

Jianshui Ancient City | A Thousand-Year-Old Lin'an, Hiding Yunnan's Gentlest Slow Time ✨ Having traveled through many ancient cities in Yunnan, I have a particular fondness for Jianshui. Unlike the bustling crowds of Dali and Lijiang, this ancient city of Lin'an, with its thousand-year history, is a truly living ancient city. There's no excessive commercialization or dense clusters of trendy shops; only the rich cultural heritage and the everyday life brimming with life, hiding the leisurely pace of southern Yunnan's life within the ancient alleyways and blue-brick walls passed down through the years. The moment you step into the ancient city, all the anxieties of your journey are soothed. The winding bluestone paths, polished by centuries of wind and rain, are both warm and rustic. Along the streets are well-arranged Ming and Qing dynasty houses and elegant stone archways, their upturned eaves embodying Chinese aesthetics, their mottled walls etched with the marks of time. Deep within the alleys, locals still live and work for generations, with wisps of smoke rising from chimneys in the morning and leisurely conversations in the afternoon—a blend of everyday life and ancient charm, gentle and healing. The spirit of the ancient city is hidden in its cultural heritage passed down through generations. The Chaoyang Tower, standing majestically in the east of the city for six hundred years, bears witness to the vicissitudes of Jianshui over a millennium. Greeting the sunrise and bidding farewell to the sunset, it is the most captivating landmark of the ancient city. The Jianshui Confucian Temple, the largest in China, is tranquil and serene. Ancient cypress trees reach for the sky, and the Pan Pond reflects the surrounding landscape. Its ancient and solemn architecture, with its bracketed eaves and flying corners, exudes a scholarly atmosphere that has continued for a thousand years. A stroll through it is filled with a refined and tranquil ambiance, inspiring awe. Every step reveals a scene of ancient charm, and every brick and tile tells a story. The Zhu Family Garden, hailed as the "Grand View Garden of Southern Yunnan," features winding corridors, secluded courtyards, and exquisitely carved beams and painted rafters. Each courtyard offers a unique view, showcasing the elegant splendor of a once-powerful family. The century-old narrow-gauge railway, winding its way through rice paddies and ancient villages, its whistle whistling softly in the evening breeze, offers an immersive experience of the romance and gentleness of bygone days—a uniquely Jianshui-esque healing romance. What's most captivating is the vibrant, everyday life of the ancient town. Everywhere you look, there are stalls selling grilled tofu, their smoke rising, the crispy exterior and tender interior a testament to Jianshui's ingrained flavor. The fragrant and sweet grass-sprout rice noodles and authentic local barbecue are affordable and delicious, each bite a taste of southern Yunnan. Spend your leisure time sitting by the roadside, watching locals chat and slowly grill tofu, letting time flow by peacefully—a truly serene and enjoyable experience. And here you'll find the unique Jianshui purple pottery, its thousand-year-old kilns burning ever since. Meticulously crafted by artisans, its crackled texture is warm and elegant, embodying the craftsmanship and heritage of southern Yunnan—the ancient town's most precious cultural symbol. By day, admire the ancient architecture and cultural heritage; by night, embrace the vibrant life of the ancient city. By day, Jianshui is like Lin'an, a city steeped in history and culture, with its scholarly atmosphere and gleaming ancient buildings. By night, Jianshui transforms into a gentle, relaxed town, with soft lights, tranquil streets, and the aroma of delicious food carried on the evening breeze, making every journey more pleasant. In Jianshui, there's no need to rush to see everything; simply stroll at your leisure. See the ancient buildings reflected in the moonlight, hear the rumble of the railway tracks, savor the everyday life, and cherish the gentle passage of time. This hidden gem of an ancient city in southern Yunnan tells the story of the most healing slow-paced life in Yunnan through its millennia-old cultural heritage and gentle, vibrant atmosphere. 🌿 (For sightseeing)

Tuanshan Residence, located near Tuanshan Railway Station, is home to the Zhang family. Their ancestral precepts are quite educational. Surrounded by a village gate, it was formerly used to protect their clan. Now, many local residents live there; elderly people play cards and sell goods, while newcomers come to visit. For example, I encountered a vendor from Jianshui selling ceramic tile figurines—quite interesting. Life there is simple and rustic, worth a visit.

It's a worthwhile place to visit; the walk through it was quite impressive. The dry cave section showcased a collection of traditional beliefs. The rock climbing and bird's nest harvesting techniques in the Swallow Cave were truly nerve-wracking. The cave is deep, with constantly changing scenery, but the final climb up the steps is not recommended for elderly people with mobility issues. There's a small restaurant outside the scenic area worth trying.

Chaoyang Tower, with its long history and one story taller than Tiananmen Square, is a must-see attraction in Jianshui! The exhibitions and historical information upstairs are quite interesting; you can learn a lot if you take your time. From Chaoyang Tower, you can enjoy some panoramic views of Jianshui, which is a great perspective! The prices at Chaoyang Tower are reasonable, the service is excellent, and overall, I highly recommend it!
