A boat ride along the Qinhuai River allows you to enjoy the scenery along the river while listening to the historical stories and anecdotes told by your guides. During the tour, you will see many antique buildings with white walls and black tiles. Lights from the buildings as well as the strings of red lanterns under their eaves are reflected in the Qinhuai River, as though the boat is taking you through the famous literary work of Zhu Ziqing.Nanjing · 49.2 km from Quanjiao

Xuanwu Lake Scenic Area

7.1
4.8/5
6.9k reviews
Xuanwu Lake Scenic Area, anciently named Sangbo or Houhu Lake, is located at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain. As one of China's larger imperial garden lakes, it is collectively known as the "Three Famous Lakes of Jiangnan" alongside Jiaxing's South Lake and Hangzhou's West Lake. The scenic area consists of five green islets—Huanzhou, Yingzhou, Lingzhou, Liangzhou, and Cuizhou—connected by bridges and causeways. Scattered across these islets are historical sites like the Guopu Mound and Lansheng Pavilion, making it now a renowned cultural and leisure park in Nanjing. Exiting Nanjing Railway Station, the southern side leads directly to the lakeside path, where a leisurely stroll offers panoramic lake views. The southern shore also borders a section of the Ming Dynasty city wall, framing a picturesque composition of the wall, lake, and distant Zhongshan Mountain—a uniquely charming vantage point for lake appreciation. In summer, vast stretches of lotus blossoms adorn the lake, with their emerald green leaves creating an enchanting scene. This area has been Nanjing's prime lotus-viewing destination since ancient times. For a different perspective, you can rent a pedal boat or electric boat to tour the lake and enjoy the view of the five islets and surrounding cityscape from the water. Alternatively, you can explore the islets on foot: in spring, cherry blossoms adorn Yingzhou, which also features a lotus garden perfect for admiring and photographing lotuses. Huanzhou boasts artificial waterfalls and rockeries made of Taihu stones, including the striking "Child worshiping Guanyin" formation resembling a child bowing to the goddess. The Guopu Mound on the northwest hill offers the highest vantage point overlooking the entire lake. Lingzhou's Tailing Flower Frame provides views of Zhongshan and Little Jiuhua Mountain. Liangzhou gathers attractions like the Bonsai Garden, Azalea Garden, and Scenic View Tower. Cuizhou is lush with pines, bamboos, and willows, ideal for quiet strolls. The attraction's eastern side features a couple garden planted with tulips, peach blossoms, and other flowers, often frequented by newlyweds for wedding photos.Nanjing · 49.6 km from Quanjiao
Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum

Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum

22.8k reviews
Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is located in the Zhongshan scenic area in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing, nestled at the southern foot of Purple Mountain, adjacent to Linggu Temple to the east and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum to the west. It serves as the tomb of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The entire architectural complex, designed by architect Lü Yanzhi, follows the mountain's terrain along a central axis from south to north. When viewed from above, the tomb area forms a "warning bell" pattern, symbolizing "awakening the people." Construction began in 1926, and the main structures were completed in 1929, marked by the grand burial ceremony. The blue-glazed tiles paired with granite walls create a solemn and serene tone, making it one of the representative works blending Chinese and Western architectural styles. Along the central axis: the entrance features a towering granite Bo'ai archway, with the gilded inscription "Bo'ai" (universal love) handwritten by Sun Yat-sen on its lintel. Behind the archway lies a long tomb path flanked by trees. At the end of the path stands the mausoleum gate with cyan-glazed tiles, inscribed with "Tianxia wei gong" (the world belongs to the public). Further north is the stele pavilion housing a massive granite tombstone. Beyond this are 392 stone steps with a height difference of over 70 m, each section offering a resting platform. A thought-provoking visual design hides here: looking up from below, only steps are visible; looking down from above, only platforms appear—a detail worth experiencing firsthand. On one platform along the way, a pair of bronze tripods inscribed with "grand burial ceremony" are displayed, one bearing a bullet hole from Japanese artillery fire in 1937—a detail often missed by hurried visitors but worth pausing to observe. At the top of the steps lies the main sacrificial hall, designed in palace style. Its three arched doorways are engraved with "minzu" (nationalism), "minquan" (democracy), and "minsheng" (livelihood), while the central door bears Sun Yat-sen's calligraphy "Tiandi zhengqi" (righteousness of heaven and earth). Inside, a white marble statue of Sun Yat-sen sits at the center, with six relief carvings around its base. The burial chamber behind the hall is usually closed to the public, with visits focused on the sacrificial hall. The surrounding area also features memorial structures like the music stage, Liuhui Pavilion, Yangzhi Pavilion, Xingjian Pavilion, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.Nanjing · 54.9 km from Quanjiao

Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area is located west of West Lake Scenic Area, including Lingyin Temple andFeilai peakTwo main views.Feilai peakNot large or tall, yet it gathers hundreds of statues of bodhisattvas and eminent monks from different dynasties, creating a beauty of fusion. The Lingyin Temple in the mountains is a famous ancient temple in Hangzhou, bustling with incense offerings. Lingyin Feilai Peak Scenic Area itself is not very large, and you can explore it on foot. After entering the main gate, turn left, and you'll see it in no time.Feilai peak, following the forest trail for less than 5 minutes, you'll see the entrance to Qinglin Cave. It's said that the stone slab in front of the cave was once the sleeping bed of Ji Gong, and lying on it is believed to free one from worldly troubles, attracting many travelers to take a rest here. Heading north, the Yuru Cave houses exquisite statues of the Eighteen Arhats from the Northern Song Dynasty, with additional finely crafted statues of the Six Patriarchs of Zen Buddhism on both sides of the cave's eastern entrance. The Longhong cave ahead is commonly known asGuanyin caveInside, there is a rock crevice known as "a thread of sky." Not everyone can see the light passing through the crevice, so you often see people craning their necks to look up. The cliff outside the cave is covered with stone carvings of Buddha statues. At the lower part, you can see the Song Dynasty carving of "the white horse carrying scriptures." The Ligong Pagoda at the entrance of Longhong Cave is the only remaining Ming Dynasty pagoda in Hangzhou. Following the Cold Spring Stream from here, you can also see the big-bellied Maitreya. Opposite the stone carvings stands the famous Lingyin Temple, which is open to the public free of charge but requires real-name reservation in advance, and is still well worth a visit. The statue of Skanda in the heavenly king hall is a relic from the Southern Song dynasty, carved from a single piece of camphor wood, making it extremely precious. The newly renovated Yongfu Temple in Hangzhou is located next to Lingyin Temple. Follow the signs uphill to reach it. Besides the serene ancient architecture, the temple grounds also feature a tea plantation and many ancient trees, offering quite a scenic view. Visitors must return the same way from Yongfu Temple. For those who wish to hike, there is a fork in the path halfway back to Lingyin Temple, leading to Taoguang Temple's exit and onward to Beigao Peak. This route is quiet with few people, making for a pleasant walk. Beigao Peak can be reached by hiking or taking a cable car. At the summit, the Temple of the First Wealth God under Heaven is one of Hangzhou's famous ancient temples.China · Hangzhou

Humble Administrator's Garden

8.8
4.6/5
87.4k reviews
The Humble Administrator's Garden is a famous garden in Suzhou, with water as its central feature, surrounded by artfully arranged rockeries and exquisite courtyard buildings, all flourishing with plants. This exemplary Jiangnan garden, along with Beijing's Summer Palace, Chengde Mountain Resort, and Suzhou's Lingering Garden, is collectively known as the "four great gardens of China" and has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage list. The garden's design is exquisitely crafted, offering "a unique view with every step" as you explore, with every corner embodying the charm of Jiangnan water towns. Its winding paths lead through layered archways and stone walls with intricate cutouts, where no two pavilions or windows are alike—each perfectly complemented by surrounding flora to create picturesque scenes. You could easily spend hours photographing here. The garden is divided into eastern, central, and western sections, each with distinct features. The central garden largely preserves the simple and natural style of Ming Dynasty gardens, representing the essence of the entire complex and warranting thorough exploration. The eastern garden offers more open spaces, while the western garden features exquisite architecture. At the southern end of the Humble Administrator's Garden lies Suzhou Garden Museum, China's specialized museum dedicated to garden art. Humble Administrator's Garden features major views including Lanxue hall, Hanqing pavilion, Yuanxiang hall, Xiangzhou boat, Thirty-six mandarin ducks hall, and bonsai garden. Two particularly interesting sights stand out: first is the "borrowed view of Beisi pagoda"—when looking westward from the east garden, the pagoda 1 km away appears within the garden, creating a popular photo opportunity for travelers, with this borrowed scenery technique visible throughout the grounds during exploration. Second is the "small flying rainbow bridge" in the central garden, where vermilion railings reflected in water resemble a rainbow, forming an exceptionally beautiful view centered on this bridge. The garden's floral displays change with the seasons: azalea exhibition in spring, lotus exhibition in summer, chrysanthemum exhibition in fall, and fruit bonsai exhibition around the Spring Festival.China · Suzhou

Lingyin Temple

21k reviews
Lingyin Temple, also known as "Yunlin Temple," is located at the foot of Lingyin Mountain on the west side of West Lake. With its serene environment, it is the oldest renowned temple in Hangzhou, preserving numerous exquisite cultural relics from various dynasties. This is the place where Jigong became a monk, and it is said that prayers made here are very efficacious, attracting a continuous stream of worshippers every day. Seventeen hundred years of trials have made Lingyin Temple a treasure trove of history and culture: the plaque inscribed "Yunlin Chan Temple" hanging in the heavenly king hall was written by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty; the stone pagoda in front of the main hall and the stone sutra pillar in front of the heavenly king hall are relics from the Wuyue period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms; the temple houses precious Buddhist artifacts such as ancient palm-leaf scriptures, a gilded statue from the Eastern Wei dynasty, a handwritten copy of the "Diamond Sutra" by Dong Qichang of the Ming dynasty, and the wooden dragon sutra from the Yongzheng era of the Qing dynasty. Lingyin Temple is also where the monk "Jigong" (Daoji) was ordained. In the Daoji Chan Master Hall of Lingyin Temple, a statue of Jigong is enshrined, holding a broken fan in his right hand, prayer beads in his left, and resting his right foot on a wine jar. Lingyin Temple is nestled against the Northern Peak and faces Feilai Peak. Though Feilai Peak is not tall, it features numerous fantastically shaped caves and over 340 Buddhist rock carvings dating back to the Five Dynasties period, making it a rare gem of ancient grotto art in southern China. The temple enjoys year-round bustling incense offerings, especially on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month or major Buddhist festivals, when devotees flock from all directions, creating massive crowds.China · Hangzhou

The Presidential Palace of Nanjing has a long history and prominent reputation. During the Qing Dynasty, it is the Weaving department of Jiangning and the Administrative headquarters of Jiangnan. On New Year's Day in 1912, Father of Modern China Dr Sun Yat-sen was appointed as the interim president at this location. Sun Yat-sen used this place as the president's office and meeting room thereafter. Since then, the palace served as the presidential residence of the Kuomintang government. The building is a mixture of Chinese and Western architectural styles. It is generously proportioned and intriguing to look at. Take a stroll through the park to track the footsteps of Sun Yat-sen and understand the ever-changing nature of history.Nanjing · 49.6 km from Quanjiao

Hongcun Scenic Area is a typical Huizhou ancient village, and renowned as a “village of Chinese paintings.” Visit Hongcun to see the ancient irrigation system, including its lakes Yuezhao (Moon Pond) and Nanhu (South Lake). Visitors can also observe the “three carvings” of Huizhou: brick carving, stone carving, and wood carving. With the same detail as paper cutting, the human landscape blends perfectly with the natural landscape. The scene is perfect for visiting students of art to sketch.China · Yi County

A night cruise on the eastern section of the Qinhuai River was passable, but not breathtaking. In terms of lighting and color, it paled in comparison to the old streets of Tangshan's Hetou area; in terms of picturesque streetscapes, it fell short of the commercialized ancient towns of Jiangnan. It's a pity that the historical and cultural heritage of the Qinhuai River was wasted, as the only decent presentation was the crude and superficial electronic commentary. The price of 120 yuan isn't outrageous, but it certainly doesn't offer value for money. The management of the cruise ships was also rather lax; the day and night cruises were held consecutively, yet the prices differed significantly. Catching one of the last few day cruises, the 40-minute ride was roughly the same as the first few dozen night cruises, and you didn't have to wait in long lines at the dock like night cruise passengers.

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Scenic Area, located on Zijin Mountain in Nanjing, is the tomb of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and a national 5A-level scenic area. Admission to the mausoleum is free. As the core of the Zhongshan Scenic Area, it is not only a memorial site but also a masterpiece of modern architectural art. Its unique architectural style: the overall plan is shaped like a "Liberty Bell," symbolizing the awakening of the people. There are 392 stone steps from the archway to the tomb chamber, symbolizing the 392 million people in China at that time. The core attractions are concentrated here: the Bo'ai Archway, the mausoleum gate, the stele pavilion, the sacrificial hall, and the tomb chamber. Surrounding these are auxiliary buildings such as the Music Stage, the Liuhui Pavilion, and the Meiling Palace.

At the summit, there's just a rock and a flat area, nothing special. On the other side, there's a temple to the God of Wealth with 1399 steps. You need to be very sincere to reach the top. Below are various Buddhist halls and temples, as well as some stone carvings of Buddha statues. The scenery is pleasant, with mountains, water, and forests.

Booking is convenient; you can enter the park directly via QR code without needing to exchange for a separate ticket, which is very convenient. The scenic area is popular, even more so than when I visited ten years ago. Traveling during off-peak hours allows you to fully appreciate the unique beauty of the gardens. Wearing traditional Chinese clothing while visiting the park will enhance the immersive experience.

On a hot day with temperatures above 30 degrees, I cleverly arranged a trip to the Chuzhou Museum in advance this afternoon. Although there are only two main exhibition halls on the second floor (the first floor is a temporary exhibition hall), the collection is quite rich and I gained a lot. The entire second-floor exhibition hall is based on time, clearly recording the migration changes in Chuzhou from ancient times to the present. After visiting the exhibition hall, it is like reading a thick history book, which makes people unforgettable and endless aftertaste.

Yiyuan Garden is a long-established private garden in Nanxun, with an exquisite layout, a wide lake, and winding pavilions and corridors. It's much less crowded than Xiaolianzhuang Garden, making it quiet and comfortable. Lush greenery and schools of koi carp make it perfect for a leisurely stroll and taking photos, allowing you to experience the elegance of a Jiangnan garden. Online tickets offer direct entry and are good value. It's a good place to rest after exploring the main street of the ancient town.
