Humble Administrator's Garden

8.8
4.6/5
87.3k reviews
The Humble Administrator's Garden is a famous garden in Suzhou, with water as its central feature, surrounded by artfully arranged rockeries and exquisite courtyard buildings, all flourishing with plants. This exemplary Jiangnan garden, along with Beijing's Summer Palace, Chengde Mountain Resort, and Suzhou's Lingering Garden, is collectively known as the "four great gardens of China" and has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage list. The garden's design is exquisitely crafted, offering "a unique view with every step" as you explore, with every corner embodying the charm of Jiangnan water towns. Its winding paths lead through layered archways and stone walls with intricate cutouts, where no two pavilions or windows are alike—each perfectly complemented by surrounding flora to create picturesque scenes. You could easily spend hours photographing here. The garden is divided into eastern, central, and western sections, each with distinct features. The central garden largely preserves the simple and natural style of Ming Dynasty gardens, representing the essence of the entire complex and warranting thorough exploration. The eastern garden offers more open spaces, while the western garden features exquisite architecture. At the southern end of the Humble Administrator's Garden lies Suzhou Garden Museum, China's specialized museum dedicated to garden art. Humble Administrator's Garden features major views including Lanxue hall, Hanqing pavilion, Yuanxiang hall, Xiangzhou boat, Thirty-six mandarin ducks hall, and bonsai garden. Two particularly interesting sights stand out: first is the "borrowed view of Beisi pagoda"—when looking westward from the east garden, the pagoda 1 km away appears within the garden, creating a popular photo opportunity for travelers, with this borrowed scenery technique visible throughout the grounds during exploration. Second is the "small flying rainbow bridge" in the central garden, where vermilion railings reflected in water resemble a rainbow, forming an exceptionally beautiful view centered on this bridge. The garden's floral displays change with the seasons: azalea exhibition in spring, lotus exhibition in summer, chrysanthemum exhibition in fall, and fruit bonsai exhibition around the Spring Festival.Suzhou · 5 km from downtown

Hanshan Temple

27k reviews
Hanshan Temple is located in the western suburbs of Suzhou and has a history of over 1,500 years. It gained worldwide fame through the famous line "Outside Gusu City, Hanshan Temple; midnight bell sounds reach the traveler's boat" from the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji's poem "Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night." Every day, countless devotees come to the temple to strike the bell, offer incense, and pray for peace. Hanshan Temple primarily consists of structures such as the Mahavira Hall, bell tower, stele corridor, and scripture repository. The Mahavira Hall features a tall white marble Sumeru pedestal, atop which sits a gilded statue of Sakyamuni. Flanking the walls are 18 exquisitely crafted gilded iron arhat statues cast during the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty, relocated here from the sacred Buddhist site of Mount Wutai. In the stele corridor, visitors can see fragments of inscriptions by Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin—two of the "Four Great Talents of Jiangnan"—as well as poetic steles by notable figures like Yue Fei and Kang Youwei. Particularly iconic is the poetic stele "Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night," inscribed by the renowned late Qing scholar Yu Yue. The bell tower in the temple is the source of the "midnight bell sound," and the resonant, melodious chime is a symbol of Hanshan Temple. Every December 31st, Hanshan Temple holds a bell-ringing ceremony to ring in the new year, striking the bell 108 times to symbolize the dispelling of worries in the coming year. Although the current bell is no longer the one mentioned in Tang poetry but rather a relic from the late Qing dynasty, it is an enormous rarity that requires three people to embrace it fully.Suzhou · 2 km from downtown

Fengqiao Scenic Area is located by the canal west of the ancient city of Suzhou, known forFengqiao, Tieling Pass, Fengqiao ancient town,Ancient canal(A section of the Grand Canal) serves as the main attraction. Zhang Ji's Tang dynasty poem "Mooring by maple bridge at night" has drawn countless visitors through the ages to reflect on history and experience the ethereal atmosphere of hearing Hanshan Temple's bells beneath Fengqiao bridge. The Fengqiao Scenic Area's ancillary attractions occupy most of its elongated, north-south oriented Jiangfeng islet, which connects to land via bridges. Hanshan Temple stands to the east, separated by a narrow waterway. The Iron Bell Pass and Hanshan Temple are on the same bank, together with the Maple Bridge adjacent to the Iron Bell Pass, located at the northwest corner outside Hanshan Temple. The attraction has three entrances: the Heshan entrance in the south near Heshan Road and Jinmen Road, the Jiangcun Bridge entrance near the main gate of Hanshan Temple in the middle, and the Iron Bell Pass entrance in the north which leads directly to the main attraction, the Iron Bell Pass and Maple Bridge. The southern part of Jiangfeng Islet is a green belt with sparsely arranged gardens and halls, while the northern part features the newly built ancient-style Maple Bridge Old Town. There was indeed an old town here historically, thriving during the Ming and Qing dynasties as a hub where the canal and ancient post road converged, attracting numerous merchants before being destroyed in war. You can visit several exhibition halls in the town, including the Water Transport Exhibition Hall to see ship models,Jiangfeng AcademyViewing the art exhibition, the miniature model "Scenic spots of Fengqiao" in Fengqiao Garden recreates the scene from the Ming and Qing dynastiesFengqiaoThe bustling scene of the area. Several bridges are also worth noting. Jiangcun bridge near the gate of Hanshan Temple is an ancient bridge rebuilt during the Qing dynasty. It's said that the "jiang feng" in "jiang feng yu huo dui chou mian" refers both to maple trees by the river and to Jiangcun bridge and Maple bridge. The wooden covered bridge, Tingzhong bridge, offers a great angle for photographing Maple bridge and Tieling Pass. Under the archway Jinghong crossing at the northern end of Jiangfeng islet, you can see the busy traffic of boats on the ancient canal, with a cargo ship dock just across the river. A short walk east from Tingzhong bridge brings you to Maple bridge, where several steps by the waterway are said to be the mooring spot of Zhang Ji. The original construction date of Maple bridge is unknown; what we see today was rebuilt in the 6th year of Tongzhi reign (1867 AD). Walking across this single-arch stone bridge, you'll notice the steps extending into the gateway of Tieling Pass, worn smooth by time with uneven edges, vividly conveying the passage of years through the marks left by countless visitors. Tieling Pass was first built in the 36th year of Jiajing reign (1557 AD) of the Ming dynasty, serving as Suzhou's only remaining anti-pirate tower. Its stone base remains original from the Ming-Qing period, with ivy covering the weathered surface like a chronicle of time. The upper pavilion is a modern reconstruction. Visitors can ascend the narrow staircase to overlook Fengqiao ancient town and gaze at Puming pagoda of Hanshan Temple. From the dock below Tieling Pass, you can take a cruise that leisurely passes under bridges, recreating the poetic "arriving guest boat" experience. Additionally, the cruise features Pingtan performances, where soft Suzhou dialect blends with oar sounds and water reflections—a living footnote to the verse "the midnight bell reaches the visitor's boat."Suzhou · 2 km from downtown

Lion Grove Garden, Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, and Canglang Pavilion are collectively known as the “Four Famous Suzhou Gardens”. The Lion Grove Garden was built in the Yuan Dynasty and was originally a back garden of Zen temples. It was later purchased as a private residence. This garden was treasured by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, who always stayed here during his visits to Southern China. Although the Lion Grove Garden is small, the artificial mountains in the park are very well-known. The strange rocks resemble dancing lions. The connection between the artificial mountains is not dissimilar to a maze. You can play hide-and-seek in the stone maze or count the number of observable stone lions.Suzhou · 4.8 km from downtown

Lingering Garden(Liuyuan Garden), along with Suzhou's Humble Administrator's Garden, Beijing's Summer Palace, and Chengde's Mountain Resort, is collectively known as one of China's four great classical gardens. Within its grounds, pavilions, towers, exotic rocks, and winding corridors blend with lush greenery and a tranquil pond, creating picturesque views at every turn. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the serene harmony between garden landscapes and natural scenery. Lingering Garden(Liuyuan Garden) was first built in the 21st year of the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty (1593 AD) as the private garden of Xu Taishi, the "Assistant Minister of the Court of Imperial Stud," and was then called "East Garden." At the end of the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty, it was acquired by Liu Shu, who expanded it and renamed it "Cold Green Villa," then known as "Liu Garden." Later, it was purchased by the official Sheng Kang, who renamed it "Lingering Garden(Liuyuan Garden)." The garden is divided into four sections, each offering distinct landscapes—water and hills, pastoral scenes, mountain forests, and courtyards—within a single space. The central area highlights water features (a small pond), surrounded by structures like the Ke Pavilion, Yuancui Pavilion, and Quxi Tower. The eastern section excels in winding corridors and architectural details, housing over a dozen scenic spots such as the Jiaqing Xiyu Kuaixue Pavilion, Linquan Qishuo Hall, and Guanyun Tower. Here lie the "three treasures of Lingering Garden (Liuyuan Garden)": the Guanyun Peak (Taihu rock), the nanmu hall, and the fish fossil. Guanyun Peak is slender in shape, embodying all four wonders of Taihu Lake stones: "slenderness, wrinkling, perforation, and transparency." It is said to be a relic from the Huashi Gang of the late Northern Song Dynasty. The nanmu hall is located in the Five Peaks Immortal Hall, with its pillars made of nanmu wood. However, they were damaged during the Anti-Japanese War and later had to be covered with cement and painted. The fish fossil is a piece of marble about one meter in diameter, produced in the Diancang Mountains of Yunnan. Its surface texture resembles a landscape painting. The northern and western sections of Lingering Garden(Liuyuan Garden) are relatively open. The northern area features rural scenery and a newly established bonsai garden, while the western zone, the highest point of the garden, offers a wild charm with its remarkable rockeries. On the southern side of the pond, the Hanbi Mountain House and Mingse Tower serve as the garden's primary viewing structures. The Lingering Garden(Liuyuan Garden) is not very large. You can explore the entire garden by following the 700 m-long winding corridor and garden paths, where guide map signs are also available.Suzhou · 2 km from downtown

The twin bridges depicted by artist Chen Yifei capture the gentle charm of "small bridges, flowing water, and homes." The southern part of the ancient townSouth LakeVast and beautiful. When the lights come on at night, Zhouzhuang takes on a whole new charm. Tour highlights Ancient mansions with brick-carved gate towers in the misty rain of Jiangnan The architecture in zhouzhuang primarily consists of jiangnan-style residences, including nearly a hundred ancient courtyard houses, most of which date back to the ming and qing dynasties. Surrounded by water on all sides, the ancient town was shaped by its rivers, with intersecting waterways forming a grid-like pattern embedded within the town. This unique layout creates streets that follow the water's edge and markets that line these streets. Above zhouzhuang's water alleys, 14 ancient stone bridges from the yuan, ming, and qing dynasties remain well-preserved. These ancient bridges, water alleys, and historic houses truly embody the poetic scene of "small bridges, flowing water, and homes." Visit ancient dwellings and trace the footsteps of famous figures There are many ancient residential architectural relics here, with the famous ones being zhouzhuang zhang hall, zhouzhuang shen hall, and the mysterious zhouzhuang ancient town - shen wansan's water tomb, which is said to be his cenotaph. Zhouzhuang shen hall was built by shen wansan's descendants and is a well-preserved qing dynasty residence in zhouzhuang. Its ingenious structure allows visitors to glimpse the life traces of a wealthy magnate in jiangnan, and even touch the legendary "treasure basin." Originally named yishun hall, zhouzhuang zhang hall was built earlier in the ming dynasty and later transferred to the zhang family during the qing dynasty, renamed zhouzhuang zhang hall. It is a typical ming dynasty official residence. The rowing boats in the water alleys are a beautiful dream of the water town. Zhouzhuang is a small town, with its length and width both approx. 1-2 km, making it perfect for exploring on foot. However, taking a boat ride along the waterways is highly recommended. The boats in the ancient town are wooden vessels covered with traditional blue floral cloth, accommodating 1-6 passengers. The boatwomen often sing local Wu dialect folk songs, adding a charming water-town ambiance. "Only in Zhouzhuang" immersive multi-dimensional space theater "Zhouzhuang: A Dream Within A Dream" is an immersive multi-dimensional theatrical experience designed to transport audiences on a "journey of self-encounter" through layered dreams. The story follows Zhou He, a youth traveler attending an astronomy enthusiasts' gathering in Zhouzhuang, who witnesses the dreams and life of his Song Dynasty namesake from 900 years ago. During the 80-minute performance, audiences enter the dreams of both contemporary Zhou He and his Song Dynasty counterpart, following four chapters - "Old dreams", "Entering the painting", "Going to war", and "Finding the way" - to explore the aesthetic world of the Song Dynasty and the ancient water town of Zhouzhuang, witnessing the pursuits of its historical figures through cross-temporal dialogues. Leisurely life, enjoy relaxation with ease Zhouzhuang is a perfect place to relax. In the morning, you can enjoy the breeze by the river and savor some Jiangnan-style breakfast. During the day, you can stroll around the town, listen to opera while drinking tea at a teahouse, or read a book with coffee at a café. Jinji Lake

Jinji Lake is located in Suzhou Industrial Park, showcasing a modern skyline of high-rise buildings that contrasts with the ancient charm of Suzhou's old town. Slightly larger than Hangzhou's West Lake, it attracts many travelers daily for lakeside leisure walks, shopping, and dining, as well as couples taking wedding photos. The attraction has four entrances to this open park, accessible from any side. Most travelers enter through the west entrance, near a subway station offering views of Suzhou's new landmark, the Gate of the Orient skyscraper, colloquially known as "Big Pants." Bike rentals are available near the subway exit for those wanting to ride around the lake. The west entrance leads to Lakeside New Heaven and Earth, the starting point of Lakeside Avenue, featuring a pleasant wooden waterfront promenade and lifelike bronze statues. On sunny days, many jog or ride bikes here, while the lakeside grass is perfect for picnics, barbecues, or kite-flying. You can also see the "Harmony" sculpture by the lake. With enough time, consider taking a boat from Wanghu Pavilion Pier to Peach Blossom Island at the lake's center, especially stunning during the blooming season. After exploring the west entrance, walk or take a water bus to Ligongdi Pier. Ligongdi, the only causeway on Jinji Lake, preserves traditional Suzhou architecture and hosts an international waterfront shopping street blending global brands and local shops. Alternatively, ride the free (holiday surcharges may apply) sightseeing train to attractions like the Fund Museum, extreme sports area, Mid-Lake Pavilion, Lingyun Bridge, and Li Chaoqiong Poetry Monument. Couples or families can take a water bus directly from Wanghu Pavilion Pier to Moon Harbor or enter via the north entrance, where the modern leisure plaza features the Suzhou Culture and Arts Center (dubbed "Suzhou Bird's Nest"), linking the Red Maple Forest view and Suzhou International Expo Center, housing theaters, cinemas, and performance halls. Capture photos or watch a 3D movie here. Thrill-seekers can ride the Ferris wheel for panoramic lake views. Jinji Lake's nightscape is equally captivating. Take an evening cruise (about 40-minute duration) from Moon Harbor or Wanghu Pavilion Pier, passing daytime attractions. The lake's illuminated bridges are a highlight, with digital waterfalls displaying colorful patterns and text. Don't miss Harmony Sky Screen, spanning 500 meters long, 32 meters wide, and 21 meters high—outstripping Las Vegas' canopy—where giant lotus leaves and colorful fish animations dazzle overhead nightly.Suzhou · 11.2 km from downtown

I've memorized "A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge" since I was little, and this time I finally got to visit Hanshan Temple in person! 🌿 Yellow walls and black tiles, the faint scent of incense—stepping inside instantly brought a sense of peace. Take your time to explore the stele gallery. The stele inscribed with Yu Yue's poem "A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge" is here; every word carries poetic meaning across a thousand years. You can climb the bell tower and ring the bell to pray for blessings. The deep, resonant sound carries far, seemingly carrying away all your worries.

Today's visit to the Suzhou Museum, guided by Ms. Xu Hui, was incredibly enriching. Previously, I only knew of the warm patina of the celadon ware and the exquisite craftsmanship of the pearl reliquary pagoda; I could only see the surface of the objects. Many hidden details, the historical context, and the stories behind them—without your patient explanations, I would likely have simply rushed past them, missing their true meaning. Your explanations were unhurried and concise, seamlessly blending historical facts with engaging details, allowing the coldly displayed antiquities to slowly acquire the warmth of time. Although this trip had other regrets, your thoughtful explanations allowed me to truly understand a part of the profound cultural heritage of Jiangnan. I am deeply grateful and thank you very much.

It wasn't peak season, so it was a great place to stroll around. There were fewer people, and more seating options at the back. Seating was limited at the beginning. Tea shops were a bit pricey, but that's to be expected since it's a tourist area. There are plenty of restaurants near the exit, so you can choose according to your needs. Just ask about the prices beforehand; there are several ticket options, but they're all reasonably priced.
