On my trip to Switzerland, the most unforgettable part was taking the train from Bern to Lucerne. This is one of my favorite places on my three European trips and also the most beautiful small town in Switzerland. It has a romantic nickname: Luzern. Over 1,300 years ago, it was a small fishing village by Lake Lucerne, surrounded by picturesque mountains and lakes. On clear days, you can see the snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake. Today, Lucerne remains quite small, with the old town preserving the medieval Musegg Wall, Gothic churches, and Baroque-style buildings. Strolling through the old town and sitting by Lake Lucerne watching the snow mountains and swans is truly delightful. ✅ Attractions are concentrated / perfect for city walks 1️⃣ Chapel Bridge and Water Tower This is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe (built in 1333). The painted panels on the roof depict the history of the Black Death, and the octagonal Water Tower once served as a defense tower and treasury. 2️⃣ Hof Church | Twin-tower Gothic architecture This is the oldest church in Lucerne, but it’s famous not for its age, but because Audrey Hepburn’s wedding (1954) was held here. 3️⃣ Lion Monument Mark Twain called it “the saddest stone.” This monument tells a piece of Swiss history and symbolizes the loyalty and perseverance of the Swiss people. 4️⃣ Lake Lucerne boat cruise Lake Lucerne is the fourth largest lake in Switzerland. Taking a boat ride offers views of Mount Pilatus’s reflection and close encounters with the swans 🦢. 🚢 Different boat routes also connect to various lakeside resort towns and mountains like Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus. ✅🌄 Recommended to shoot classic scenes of old town buildings and snow mountains together at sunset. ✅🍱 The food here is very diverse. Besides authentic Swiss delicacies (recommended 🧀 cheese fondue, Chuegelipastetli), there are Mediterranean styles, Spanish dishes, and Chinese cuisine. For authentic Swiss flavors, I recommend the Stadtkeller Swiss folk song and dance restaurant in the old town. ✅ If you have enough time, I strongly recommend staying here for a night. The sunset over Lake Lucerne is very beautiful. After sunrise, the small town in the early morning is very peaceful. 🏨 Hotel recommendation: near Lake Lucerne, ideally with a room view of the lake. Lying down watching the sunset 🌅 is truly a luxury, though prices will be higher. ✅ Transportation The best way to get to Lucerne is by train 🚞. Many popular tourist cities within Switzerland have direct trains to Lucerne. Lucerne is located between mountains and lakes, with picturesque scenery. Traveling by train through the foothills of the Alps is so beautiful it makes you want to set off again.

Walking along the shore of Thun Lake, the snow-capped mountains seem to be right before your eyes, and the lake water is as still as a mirror, reflecting the quietest moments of life to you. 📍 Route: Grindelwald → Spiez (board the boat) → Thun (explore) → Return to Spiez (stay) 🗓️ Date: August 31, 2025 🏨 Accommodation: La Belle Vue Boutique Hotel & Cafe (by Spiez Lake) ⸻ Itinerary and Cost Details From Grindelwald to Spiez Train takes about 45–55 minutes, ticket price ranges from 10 to 25 CHF. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, this segment is completely free. Boat from Spiez to Thun The journey takes about 45–60 minutes, ticket price is around 36 CHF, also included in the Swiss Travel Pass with no extra charge. The lake scenery on this route is definitely worth experiencing. Thun Castle Entrance Fee Ticket costs about 12 CHF, free entry with Swiss Travel Pass. Return from Thun to Spiez By train, it takes about 15 minutes one way, ticket price 6–10 CHF; if you choose to return by boat, it is also free with the pass. 👉 If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, this entire Thun Lake trip is almost free, and you only need to pay for the short train ride from Thun to Spiez (6–10 CHF). Spiez: The Starting Point by the Lake Descending from Grindelwald, the mountain shadows fade and the lake light draws near. Arriving in Spiez at noon under bright sunshine, the hotel is right by the lake, and opening the window you can see sailboats gliding on the water. After dropping off your luggage, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the pier, just in time to catch the boat to Thun. ⸻ 45 Minutes on Thun Lake: The Most Beautiful Route Thun Lake is known as Switzerland’s “Sapphire,” with turquoise-blue water that looks like the sky melting into the lake. On the route from Spiez to Thun, you can see the white peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau from the bow of the boat—clear and breathtaking. Along the way, three lakeside castles are also worth noting: Oberhofen with its tower spire rising from the lake, Hünegg surrounded by woods, and Schadau Castle with its pink walls and white towers. It feels like sitting inside a slow fairy tale movie. ⸻ First Glimpse of Thun: A Quiet Small Town and the Aare River When the boat docks, Thun Castle basks in the sunlight, and the Aare River flows through the town, rushing but not noisy. Thun combines the grandeur of the Bernese Highlands with the warm life of a small town. ⸻ Thun Castle: The Best Spot to Overlook the Lake Climb the stone steps, and the castle’s white walls shine under the sun. From the tower, the entire Thun Lake spreads beneath your feet: the lake surface, orange rooftops, the Aare River, and distant snow-capped mountains together form the most iconic Swiss scene. Free entry with Swiss Travel Pass. ⸻ Church, Old Town, and Riverside Coffee Aroma Thun Church is right next to the castle, its clock tower shadow falling on the square. Walking down leads to the old street, where the river is divided by small bridges, and many cafes line both banks. When the wind blows, you can smell chocolate and coffee. This place feels more lived-in and quieter than Lucerne, without being interrupted by crowds. ⸻ Sitting by the Riverside for a While Before leaving Thun, I sat on a bench by the Aare River. Sunlight filtered through the leaves onto me; some people were fishing, some reading, some daydreaming. The true beauty of travel is probably this kind of unhurried time. ⸻ Accommodation: La Belle Vue Boutique Hotel & Cafe Located by Spiez Lake, a five-minute walk to the pier. Rooms have lake views, and at night you can hear the gentle clinking of masts by the lake. Breakfast and coffee are excellent, making it a highly cost-effective small boutique hotel in the Spiez area. Room rates range from 180 to 260 CHF, and advance booking is necessary during peak season. ⸻ Summary of Transportation · Grindelwald → Spiez: Train (45–55 minutes) · Spiez → Thun: Boat (45–60 minutes, best scenery) · Thun → Spiez: Train or boat · All routes are included in the Swiss Travel Pass, only the train from Thun to Spiez requires a small additional fee ⸻ Best Photo Tips · Board the boat from Spiez to Thun in the afternoon for the best lighting · Thun Castle from 3 PM to 5 PM offers the best light ⸻ Practical Tips · Thun Lake can be windy; bring a jacket even in summer · Thun’s old town has many cafes with reasonable prices; consider having a meal there · When taking photos on the boat deck, avoid occupying space for too long · August to September is peak season; book hotels in advance ⸻ Thun is not a “must-check-in” spot, but its gentleness and tranquility will make you fall in love with it unknowingly. If you want to slow down your trip in Switzerland, I would recommend Thun Lake to you.

The first time I came to Switzerland, the first attraction I visited was the capital of Switzerland from Germany. Before coming here, I took it for granted that the capital of Switzerland is either the well-known "Geneva" or the international brand "Zurich", but it happens to be this small city called "Berne". Legend has it that the ancient city lord, the Fifth Duke, swore while hunting that he would name the city after his first prey. The first animal killed was a Baren (bear), so he was named "Bern". Fortunately, it was not a pig. The car stopped next to the "Bear Garden"⓰, and walked uphill for 10 minutes to the "Rose Garden" built on a small hill❷❻❽⓯. This is a good place to overlook the entire "Old Town of Bern", which is listed as a World Cultural Heritage❼⓴. The Aare River❶, which gathers the clear water from the Alps, forms a huge loop when it encounters the highlands, forming a natural fortress for Bern with high steep cliffs and surrounded by water on three sides. The city's original wooden structures were destroyed in a fire, and stone was used for reconstruction. This heavy urban scene has been preserved to this day. Most cities in Europe have been destroyed by war, but Switzerland is a permanently neutral country, so the capital Bern has hardly been damaged and the medieval city scene has been well preserved. Before my eyes, there is a patch of brown-red roofs hidden in the lush greenery, and the church spire stands firmly ❸⓴ (pictured above). Walking into the old town of Bern, the buildings here are filled with a unique gray color ❺❾⓫⓬⓭⓯ (pictured below)⓱⓲. The Swiss relied on their feelings and agreed with each other to decorate each balcony with red geraniums❺. The gray and red colors formed a strong visual impact. Walking along the market street towards the city center, a major feature of the old town of Bern is that there are more than 100 fountains in the middle of the road. These sculptures were carved in the 16th century, and each one contains a story. The water from the fountain is very clean and can be compared with bottled mineral water. The fountain in the same frame with the clock tower is called "Hunter Fountain": a cute little bear is squatting, holding a shotgun, just like a sniper❿. At the end of the market street is Bern’s oldest building, the “Clock Tower”, which is considered the symbol of the city of Bern. It was built in 1192. The wall clock on the clock tower is very interesting and is also an antique with a history of 600 years❹⓮. At around 12 noon, the clock on the clock tower began to play music, and the painted statues began to dance: first the rooster crowed, then the bear guard of honor began to march to the music, and finally the god of time began to appear, and the hands pointed exactly to the hour. I witnessed this miraculous performance with hundreds of tourists, and sat under the wonderful arcades of Bern⓳, thinking of Einstein who once lived in this row of arcades❺. Legend has it that it was this "Bern Clock Tower" that gave Einstein the inspiration for the "Special Theory of Relativity". Looking back on Einstein's life, we can find that the life of this genius of this century was not all smooth sailing. When he was studying in Germany and Italy, his Chinese and history grades were not very good, so the principal advised him to go to Switzerland to study high school courses. But because the state schools here were more progressive and open, Einstein felt the joy of going to school for the first time. Einstein then graduated with the highest score in his final exams, even though he was the youngest student in the entire grade. Bern awakened the impermanence of life, and Bern allowed Einstein to exert all his energy. The "Clock Tower" gave him a fleeting light, and this genius of the century seized this moment. On the hill of the "Rose Garden", I have taken a picture of a bronze sculpture of an old man sitting on a bench with his back against the "Old Town of Bern"⓴. At that time, I didn't know that this old man was the genius who made great contributions to 20th century physics - Einstein. This place seems to have a magical power. This Swiss capital can be walked through in 20 minutes. How many miracles has Bern given birth to?
It is a very exquisite place with well-preserved buildings. From the rose garden, it is a harmonious scene. Churches and other landmarks are dotted among them. Whether you are going to the market to check in or walking slowly, it is very leisurely.
莲子99To be honest, there are not many bears in the bear park, especially if you travel during the National Day holiday, because it is a free open-air attraction, and the bears may be pulled back to the room. This is not a park, but a big pit. Here you can see the surrounding scenery, especially the small river and bridge.
莲子99Bern Clock Tower, a masterpiece of Swiss watchmaking, is the most important landmark in Bern. Under the towering green spire, there is a bronze bell with a diameter of 127 cm and a weight of 1,400 kg. The front of the clock tower is inlaid with two clocks of different sizes. In the niche on the side of the small clock face below, there are two small bronze bells and bell-ringing figures, the god of time-Hans, golden dolls, golden roosters, and a row of bears, which are realistic, lively and interesting. Every 5 to 10 minutes before the hour is the busiest time in the clock tower. Bustling tourists gather in front of the clock tower and stop to watch the "time-telling doll show". Just after 57 minutes, the show begins. The bell-ringer who rotates out next to the big bronze bell begins to ring the bell to tell the time on the hour. In the niche, the god of time flipped the hourglass, the dolls danced with joy, the golden rooster spread its wings and crowed, and the little bears paraded in a procession, welcoming the arrival of a new moment. After the bell rang, the tourists left one after another with a sense of satisfaction.
旅の径it’s best place to view the old town. also you can walk down for few minutes and it’s connected to the old town by a bridge. I heard there is a 🐻 park but I didn’t go
Su0725伯尔尼是瑞士事实上的首都,there’s a lot of building in olive green, which is quite amazing
PennyyouEinstein lived in Bern for several years and conducted some important theoretical research in this house. I think the layout inside is quite warm and has the feeling of an intellectual family.
hiluolingA large government building, only when I got here did I realize that this is a capital city. The building is solemn and has a German feel. You can join a tour group to visit it. The location is great, with a beautiful valley behind it.
莲子99When this museum was built, it was built based on the blueprint of castles from the 15th and 16th centuries. It is the second largest historical museum in Switzerland, displaying the history and culture of Switzerland from prehistoric civilization to the modern times.
