Yu Garden

56.3k reviews
Yu garden is located in the northeast of Shanghai yu garden tourist business district, adjacent to Shanghai chenghuangmiao and Shanghai yu garden tourist mall. It is a renowned classical Jiangnan-style garden and a famous scenic spot both domestically and internationally. In 1982, it was approved as a "national key cultural relics protection unit". Yu Garden was first built during the Jiajing and Wanli periods of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of over 450 years. The garden's owner, Pan Yunduan, once served as the provincial administration commissioner of Sichuan. To allow his father to enjoy his later years, Pan Yunduan began from 1559 (the Jihai year of Jiajing reign) to transform his family's vegetable field by gathering stones, digging ponds, constructing pavilions, and planting bamboo to create a garden. After more than 20 years of meticulous effort, Yu Garden was completed. The character "Yu" carries the meanings of "peace" and "tranquility," and the name "Yu Garden" embodies the wish to "delight one's elderly parents." When first constructed, Yu Garden covered over 70 mu of land and was meticulously designed by Zhang Nanyang, a renowned garden architect of the Ming Dynasty, who personally oversaw its construction. The entire garden features grand scale and exquisite scenery. The current Yu Garden covers an area of 2 hectares, featuring staggered pavilions, rugged rocks, lush trees, and exquisite craftsmanship that reveals grandeur in miniature. It showcases the artistic style of Jiangnan garden architecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties with its serene beauty and delicate details. Yu garden still preserves historical sites such as the "library building" - the birthplace of Shanghai-style painting and calligraphy, and the "dianchun hall" in yu garden which served as the headquarters of the Shanghai small sword society uprising. Ancient scholars praised yu garden with accolades like "peerless beauty in the southeast" and "the crown of southeastern gardens". Many domestic and foreign political leaders and celebrities have visited Yu Garden, making it a rare traditional cultural landmark in Shanghai.China · Shanghai

Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot is a peninsula in northern Lake Tai, named for its resemblance to a turtle raising its head. Here you can explore expansive garden complexes, cruise across Lake Tai's misty waters, discover hidden wonders on Taihu Fairy Island, or admire cherry blossoms in spring - truly experiencing why it's called "the finest spot of Lake Tai".Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spotthe artistic conception. Every spring, the spectacular cherry blossom display becomes a major attraction here, complemented by the lively cherry blossom festival. Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot in Wuxi is surrounded by water on three sides, offering both the natural beauty of vast lakes dotted with sailing boats and the idyllic charm of rural landscapes with small bridges and flowing streams. It showcases the most breathtaking scenery of Taihu Lake. Taihu Fairy Island isTai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic SpotMust-experience highlights include the Taoist celestial palace and grotto statues blending Taoist and Buddhist elements. Ascending Luding Mountain on the peninsula offers panoramic views of the lakeside greenery, with graceful boat silhouettes visible on sunny days, showcasing Taihu Lake's vast beauty. As a premier cherry blossom destination, Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot offers two unique experiences: first, a "land-water-air" panoramic viewing approach, and second, enchanting night blossoms illuminated by artistic lighting. The early cherry blossoms here typically bloom in early March, featuring mostly single or semi-double petals. Blossoms are categorized by season - early varieties last about one week from first bloom to petal fall, while late varieties bloom for 7–10 days. Temperature variations create 5–12 day gaps between these phases, when hybrid varieties flourish. The iconic Somei Yoshino cherries usually reach peak bloom in mid-to-late March (optimal viewing period), though exact timing depends on weather conditions - cold snaps may delay this floral spectacle. Summer is the perfect time to admire beautiful lotus blossoms. Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot in Wuxi features numerous historical sites and private gardens built by former elites, including Hengyun Villa with its "Finest Spot of Tai Lake" archway and Changchun Bridge, as well as Wuxi's ancient temples.Guangfu TempleMoreover, savoring the traces left by literati and artists throughout history—such as inscriptions, calligraphy, and paintings scattered throughout the site—adds another layer to your visit.Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic SpotOne of the great pleasures here. Hanshan Temple

27k reviews
Hanshan Temple is located in the western suburbs of Suzhou and has a history of over 1,500 years. It gained worldwide fame through the famous line "Outside Gusu City, Hanshan Temple; midnight bell sounds reach the traveler's boat" from the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji's poem "Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night." Every day, countless devotees come to the temple to strike the bell, offer incense, and pray for peace. Hanshan Temple primarily consists of structures such as the Mahavira Hall, bell tower, stele corridor, and scripture repository. The Mahavira Hall features a tall white marble Sumeru pedestal, atop which sits a gilded statue of Sakyamuni. Flanking the walls are 18 exquisitely crafted gilded iron arhat statues cast during the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty, relocated here from the sacred Buddhist site of Mount Wutai. In the stele corridor, visitors can see fragments of inscriptions by Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin—two of the "Four Great Talents of Jiangnan"—as well as poetic steles by notable figures like Yue Fei and Kang Youwei. Particularly iconic is the poetic stele "Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night," inscribed by the renowned late Qing scholar Yu Yue. The bell tower in the temple is the source of the "midnight bell sound," and the resonant, melodious chime is a symbol of Hanshan Temple. Every December 31st, Hanshan Temple holds a bell-ringing ceremony to ring in the new year, striking the bell 108 times to symbolize the dispelling of worries in the coming year. Although the current bell is no longer the one mentioned in Tang poetry but rather a relic from the late Qing dynasty, it is an enormous rarity that requires three people to embrace it fully.China · Suzhou

He Garden

He garden, originally named Jixiao villa, is the crowning masterpiece among Yangzhou's private gardens. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit and a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, and was named among the first batch of national key parks alongside Beijing's Summer Palace and Suzhou's Humble Administrator's Garden. The most distinctive architectural feature of He garden is its 1,500 m double-decker corridor, renowned as the "first corridor under heaven," which creates both the convenience of interconnected pathways and the beauty of winding variations. Experts consider it the prototype of China's modern overpasses. Another highlight is the "first mountain under heaven" in Pianshi mountain house, a unique rockery masterpiece created by the great painter-monk Shitao. Famous scholar Yu Qiuyu remarked that in the history of Chinese gardening, Pianshi mountain house is something to look up to. Contemporary experts in ancient architecture and gardens like Tong Jun, Liu Dunzhen, Pan Guxi, Luo Zhewen, and Chen Congzhou have all praised He garden's unique gardening techniques, calling it "a solitary example among Jiangnan gardens." Mr. Luo Zhewen even inscribed it as "the first garden of the late Qing dynasty." Stepping into He garden is like entering a magnificent historical and cultural scroll. It reveals the complex psychological journey of a legendary figure who was simultaneously an official, salt merchant, recluse, and educator. It vividly portrays the rise and fall of an aristocratic family transitioning from feudalism to enlightenment, and it brings to life the rich supplementary stories of China's turbulent modern history.Yangzhou · 69.6 km from Xinghua

I took advantage of the weekend break and drove with friends to Zhenhu Lake in Taizhou to relax. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and breathing in the fresh air, I felt much more relaxed. I even saw some Père David's deer up close. I think this trip was really great!

The Yu Gardens are stunning, the whole place is based on Chinese poetry and you can feel it down to the detail. However the crowds are wild, it was so so busy and I went on a weekday. But the reason why everyone was there was because it was so beautiful so just expect to walk slowly, take a deep breath and take your time.

We were very fortunate that our top guide today was Ms. Dong Ling. Her professional expertise was solid; she didn't just recite from memory. She eloquently explained the stories and archaeological backgrounds behind each of the museum's treasures, making dry history vivid and easy to understand. My son and I deeply experienced the thousand-year history of Nanjing. Highly recommended!

The ancient town is very old, with ancient camellia and banyan trees. My child, just over 1.4 meters tall and wearing sneakers, was charged at some attractions, but was allowed to pass through Zhenhu Lake without paying. Another unique feature of Taizhou is its paid parking; street parking is also quite expensive, especially during holidays.

Amazing experience! The animals looked happy and were absolutely adorable. The park features enormous pools and spectacular aquariums, with an incredible variety of fish, jellyfish, shellfish, and other marine life. The dolphin and orca shows were absolutely fantastic and a must-see!There are also several fun amusement park rides and attractions, making this a perfect full-day program. We visited on a weekday, and the park was quiet, so we didn’t have to queue for anything. During peak periods, however, waiting times can reach several hours. An unforgettable experience and an absolute highlight of our trip!

Hanshan Temple is very famous, and I came here because of the poem "A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge." The temple itself isn't particularly large, making it easy to stroll around. The ancient bell and inscriptions are highlights, and the atmosphere is quiet and solemn. The Maple Bridge scenic area is right outside the temple, with the river view and ancient bridge complementing each other, creating a charming Jiangnan (southern China) atmosphere. It gets quite crowded, especially on holidays. There's a strong commercial atmosphere, with many shops selling souvenirs and incense. It's suitable for a quick stop to appreciate the poetic imagery, but don't expect it to be exceptionally tranquil. A leisurely walk, listening to the bell tolling, evokes a strong sense of history.

He Garden (Jixiao Villa) truly lives up to its reputation as the "Number One Garden of the Late Qing Dynasty"—it's definitely worth a visit! The most stunning feature is its covered walkways and corridors, two stories high, interconnected like an ancient overpass. Even on rainy days, you won't get wet. Every step reveals a new vista, with various latticed windows framing the garden like paintings—every snapshot is a masterpiece. The Pian Shi Shan Fang (Stone Retreat) is a unique example of rockery by the master Shi Tao, incorporating the ingenious concepts of "flowers in a mirror" and "moon in the water." The brick and wood carvings in the Shui Xin Ting (Water Pavilion) and Mu Dan Tang (Peony Hall) are exquisite, showcasing the fusion of Chinese and Western architectural styles of the late Qing Dynasty. The garden is full of detail and rich in cultural heritage. A leisurely two-hour stroll is just right—highly recommended! A guided tour is still necessary! A wonderful visit! Learned a lot!

Before setting off, I was worried it would rain on the day of our visit, but luckily it was cloudy and not sunny, making for a wonderful experience! As soon as we entered the park, the kids went straight for the Halloween trick-or-treating, collecting twenty bags of candy in total. The Ugly Dwarf Nut Chocolate flavor was the best. The Little Dragon roller coaster was the kids' favorite, and they rode it twice. Unfortunately, it was during a primary school field trip that day, so the queue for the boat rides was too long, and we couldn't try them. We successfully obtained our Lego driving licenses from driving school; I suggest upgrading the quality of the licenses to make them more suitable as souvenirs.
