Known as the "Panda Capital," Chengdu, a city in southwestern China, is a popular hub for flights to Southeast Asia. What can you do during a long layover in Chengdu? For example, you can stroll through the city's historic districts, sample the vibrant Sichuan cuisine, and even see pandas. Chengdu is served by two international airports. Direct flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg are handled by Chengdu Tianfu Airport, while domestic and some international flights are handled by Chengdu Shuangliu Airport. However, there are exceptions, so be sure to check your arrival and departure airports when purchasing tickets. Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) is a modern air hub that opened in 2021. Located 60 km southeast of central Chengdu, it consists of two terminals. Terminal 1 handles international and some domestic flights, while Terminal 2 handles domestic flights only. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is one of China's busiest airports, located just 20 kilometers from the city. Opened in 1938, it has undergone numerous expansions and modernizations over the years. Both terminals primarily handle domestic flights, but they also accommodate international and regional flights. Both Chengdu airports have well-developed infrastructure, but the more modern Tianfu Airport is better equipped. Both hubs offer duty-free shops and a good selection of restaurants. Capsule hotels (rentable for a few hours or a day) and comfortable lounges are available for relaxation. Relax in a massage chair, order traditional tea, or simply admire the many panda souvenirs. The airports are connected to Chengdu and to each other by public transportation. Options include the metro, shuttle bus, or taxi. Both airports are connected to the city by metro lines. This is perhaps the most reliable option for travelers in terms of travel time, and is also the most cost-effective. Travelers planning to visit other cities in China can choose the high-speed train as a second mode of transportation. Chengdu's main attraction, a major draw for both local and international tourists, is its panda sanctuary. However, visiting it may not be the best option for those traveling in transit. Firstly, a walk through the sanctuary, including travel time, will take approximately 4-6 hours. Secondly, it's best to arrive around opening time (7:30-8:00 AM), when the pandas are most active. If you only have a few hours, consider exploring the historic districts and parks. To see Qing Dynasty architecture, visit Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) or Jinli Ancient Street (锦里古街), which is especially impressive in the evening. Chengdu Taikoo Li (成都太古里) is famous for designer boutiques, art spaces, and trendy cafes. Visit a traditional teahouse with bamboo chairs and stone tables in People's Park (成都市人民公园). The city boasts museums displaying the region's cultural and historical relics, as well as temple complexes. The Chengdu Museum (成都博物馆) and the Sichuan Museum (四川博物院) offer exhibits that introduce you to the city's history and the daily life of local residents. In general, the journey from the airport to downtown Chengdu and back by metro takes about 2 hours; by ground transportation during rush hour, this time can stretch to 3-4 hours. Passport control upon arrival will take about an hour (if you're lucky, significantly less) and check-in for your outbound flight will take about 2 hours. If your layover in Chengdu is six hours, there's no point in going into the city: there's practically no time left for exploring. The exception is if you're transferring by train: in that case, you'll have time to visit a park or explore one of the nearby historic districts. If you have 10 hours, you'll have time to quickly explore the historic part of the city, sample local cuisine, and perhaps even visit a museum or temple. And if you have more time (24 hours or more), it's entirely possible to see the main sights and even plan a visit to a panda sanctuary. Chengdu is famous for hotpot and spicy Sichuan cuisine, but one of the city’s most memorable food experiences can be much quieter: spending an unhurried afternoon in a traditional teahouse. We tried it in People’s Park, one of the best places to see Chengdu’s tea culture as part of everyday city life. Instead of rushing between attractions, we sat at a wooden table, ordered green tea and received a beautifully presented assortment of small sweets. The tea was served with whole leaves, allowing us to watch them slowly open in the hot water. There was no complicated ceremony or strict sequence to follow. We simply poured another cup whenever we wanted and allowed the pace of the afternoon to slow down. The accompanying sweets made the experience more interesting. The wooden tray contained several individually presented desserts with different shapes, colours and textures: a sesame-topped pastry, delicate molded sweets and playful designs inspired by local landmarks and symbols. They were served in small portions, so the set felt more like a tasting experience than a full meal. Each sweet gave us something new to try without distracting from the tea itself. What makes Chengdu’s teahouses special is that tea is only part of the experience. People come to talk, relax, observe life around them and spend time without watching the clock. Some teahouses also offer traditional performances or other entertainment. During our visit, we watched a Sichuan opera performance while drinking tea. It added colour and atmosphere to the afternoon, but the main pleasure was still the simple ritual of sitting together, refilling our cups and taking our time. This is why I would call a Chengdu teahouse a must-try food experience, even though it is not centred around one famous dish. It offers something that a quick restaurant visit cannot: a chance to experience the city’s social culture through tea. If you're heading to the Chengdu area, make sure to save this fun spot! Located at Yangtianwo Square in Dujiangyan, there's a massive panda sculpture lying on its back, clutching a phone as if it's snapping a selfie. It’s so adorable that you just can't walk past without grabbing a shot. The square itself is quite spacious, allowing you to find plenty of great angles. My favorite way to pose was making it look like the panda was actually taking a selfie with me! 📍 Good to know: The spot is right next to Lidui Park Station, making it super easy to reach. The square is open to the public and free to visit at any time. Pro tip: I wouldn't suggest coming all the way here just for the panda. It's better to pair it with a visit to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System—check out the ancient engineering first, then swing by the square for your panda photos. The statue itself doesn't take long to see, but you'll probably spend way more time than expected trying to get that perfect shot! 😄 Save this for your Chengdu itinerary! If you visit Chengdu, make sure to leave some time for a meeting with the pandas. We visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and it became one of the sweetest memories of our trip. We arrived in the afternoon on a weekday, so there were not too many visitors. It was easy to walk around and get close to the panda enclosures without having to squeeze through a crowd. I really enjoyed that — instead of taking a quick look and moving on, we could stop, watch and simply enjoy these amazing animals. The base is large, green and beautifully maintained. The landscape has different levels, and the walking paths lead through several areas, so exploring the park on foot feels like a little adventure in itself. We chose to walk, but small shuttle buses are also available if you prefer not to cover the whole territory on foot. And now for the main stars. 🐼 The adult pandas are true celebrities. Calm, relaxed and completely aware of their popularity. They can simply sit, eat or lounge in the sunshine while a whole crowd of admiring visitors watches them. But the baby pandas are a completely different story! They are little explorers with endless energy and curiosity. One moment they are climbing a tree and then seem to have no idea how to get back down. The next, they discover a little stone and immediately decide to investigate it with their teeth. You could watch them for hours — every little panda seems to have its own personality and its own plans for the day. There is also an area for red pandas. Unfortunately, during our visit they were fast asleep, so we didn’t get to see them being active. Many visitors say that when they are awake, they can move around the area among the visitors, so perhaps we simply have to save that experience for our next trip. ❤️ I think the Chengdu Research Base is a place to visit without rushing. Walk around, observe, take photos and simply enjoy the moment. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves animals and wants to see pandas beyond the usual photographs. I went to Dujiangyan / 都江堰 quite spontaneously because I kept seeing the famous “Blue Tears” / 蓝眼泪 and wanted to know what it actually looked like in person 😂 Instead of planning properly, I took a Didi straight from central Chengdu. Mine was around 1.5 hours going there, and by the time I travelled back to Chengdu, I had easily spent about 2.5–3 hours just getting there and back. Was that the smartest way? Probably not 😂 There’s a much more sensible train option towards Lidui Park Station / 离堆公园站, and if I were doing this again, I’d definitely make Dujiangyan a proper day trip instead of travelling all this way mainly for the Blue Tears. Because once I arrived, I realised there’s actually quite a lot around here. You have Dujiangyan itself, the old town area, Nanqiao / 南桥, and Yangtianwo Square / 仰天窝广场, where you’ll find that giant panda casually lying there taking a selfie 🐼📱 And yes, the panda is MASSIVE in person 😂 Definitely worth walking over for a photo while you’re here. Then stay around until evening for the Blue Tears. One thing I’d prepare myself for: the river gets VERY crowded once the lights come on. A lot of people gather along the railings trying to take photos, so getting a completely clear spot isn’t always easy. I somehow accidentally found a better solution while waiting 😂 Before it got dark, I went into one of the restaurants beside the river, ordered some food and beer and basically just sat there until the lights came on. I’d actually recommend doing this if you find a restaurant with a decent river-facing seat. I noticed quite a lot of locals doing the same thing — especially the girls who clearly came prepared for photos 😂 Instead of squeezing outside with everyone else, they were comfortably sitting inside, eating, drinking and waiting for the right time to take their pictures. Honestly… smart. Now the biggest thing I wish I knew before coming: The “Blue Tears” didn’t look THAT blue to my naked eye. In person, the water looked more turquoise/greenish to me because the effect comes from the lighting on the rushing river. But the moment I opened my phone camera… Suddenly: BLUE. Very blue. 😂 Even looking at my own photos now, the river looks much more intensely blue than how I remember seeing it with my eyes. So if you’re coming because you’ve seen those glowing blue photos online, they’re not necessarily fake or heavily edited — just know that your phone seems to pick up the blue much more strongly than your eyes do. Personally, I’m glad I came because I genuinely wanted to see it once. But would I travel another 2.5–3 hours from Chengdu just for the Blue Tears again? Probably not 😂 For me, it’s definitely a one-off experience. If I came back to Dujiangyan, I’d spend the day properly exploring the area first, see the giant panda, walk around the old town and Dujiangyan, have dinner somewhere by the river, and then treat the Blue Tears as the final stop of the day. China is literally another planet! 🪐 To ensure a comfortable trip, prepare in advance 👇 🔌 1. Plugs and Adapters: China uses type A and type I plugs. Check if they differ from your country's standards and buy a universal adapter in advance. Hotels don't always provide them. 😉 💵 2. Money and Payment Apps · Exchange some of your money for yuan cash—keep it as a backup. · Download Alipay, verify your passport, and link a foreign card. You can pay in two ways: directly from your card by scanning it or from the built-in wallet—choose what's most convenient! · Download WeChat and set up WeChat Pay as a backup. WeChat is also useful for communicating with guides and hotel staff. 🌐 3. eSIM and Navigation. Google services, YouTube, Instagram, and common messaging apps are blocked in China. · Get an international eSIM with a data plan before your trip (for example, on trip.com, get at least 2 GB per day). In the afternoon, take a walk along Tangba Street to check out Japanese-style shops, the panda graffiti wall, and creative bookstores. Take your time and buy some souvenirs. When you're tired of walking, you can come to Chuanwa'er Panda Courtyard Hot Pot (Chunxi Road branch) for a meal. Nine-grid hot pot, the panda courtyard vibe is amazing, the courtyard greenery is great for photos, and it's super cost-effective at about 50–60 per person. 36 small-plate dishes: you can't go wrong with the fresh tripe, tender chicken feet, and freshly sliced tender meat. There are also panda-themed desserts to help with the spice, and the freshly made bandit-style scorched rice is super delicious! Both tourists and locals love coming here. After the meal, go to the Chunxi Road overpass to see the night view, and that's the end of a perfect day!
