Travel through the century-old tunnel: a day trip to the Old Caoling Tunnel

🌄 Starting point of the journey: Fulong Station In the early morning at Fulong Station, the sun shines through the clouds and the breeze blows on my face. This is the meeting point that my friends and I agreed to meet, ready to embark on a journey of nostalgia and adventure. The scenery around the station is quiet and beautiful, making people slow down and enjoy this moment of tranquility.  We rented bicycles from "Ancient Road Feelings Iron Horse Rental". The store offers a variety of models to choose from and introduces the route and precautions in detail. The rental process was quick and friendly, making us look forward to the upcoming journey.  🚴♀️ Cycling Tour: Along the Coast Starting from Fulong Station, we cycled along the Northeast Corner Cycling Trail. This route is flat and scenic, with magnificent sea and mountain views along the way. We passed the Lai Lai Sea Erosion Platform and the Four Corners Cave Viewing Area, and stopped at Maoao Fishing Village to taste the local fresh seafood.  During the ride, we stopped from time to time to take pictures. These attractions are not only beautiful, but also full of local cultural atmosphere, allowing us to understand this land more deeply. 🕰️ Crossing the tunnel: Old Caoling Tunnel After riding about 10 kilometers, we came to the entrance of the Old Caoling Tunnel. This tunnel was built in 1924 and was once the longest railway tunnel in Southeast Asia. It has now been converted into a bicycle path. The lights in the tunnel are dim and the air is cool. Riding in it is like traveling back to a hundred years ago.  The ground in the tunnel imitates the form of railway tracks, and retro-style oil lampshades are hung on the walls on both sides, creating a strong nostalgic atmosphere. In the tunnel, we can not only feel the weight of history, but also hear the sound effects of trains echoing in the tunnel, as if the train is about to pass.  The north and south entrances of the tunnel are respectively marked with two calligraphy works, "White Cloud Flying Place" and "Controlling the Danger of Nature", to commemorate the arduous project of the year. Standing on the border between Taipei and Yilan, we took a commemorative photo of this moment, symbolizing the completion of the journey through time and space.   🍽️ Rest and Food: No. 9 Cafe After the ride, we came to "No. 9 Cafe" near the tunnel to rest. This cafe has an elegant environment and offers a variety of drinks and light meals. We ordered signature coffee and handmade desserts, sat in the outdoor seats, admired the surrounding natural scenery, and enjoyed a moment of relaxation.  📝 Tips • Opening hours: The Old Caoling Tunnel is open all year round. From June 1 to September 30, the opening hours are from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and the site is cleared at 17:00 and entry is prohibited; from October 1 to May 31, the opening hours are from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and the site is cleared from 16:30.  • Transportation: You can take the train to Fulong Station and then rent a bicycle to go to the tunnel. You can also drive there, and there is a parking lot nearby. • Note: On holidays and national holidays, walking is prohibited in the tunnel, only cycling is allowed; if you need to walk, it is recommended to choose a weekday.  • Surrounding attractions: Fulong Beach, Bitoujiao Trail, Sandiaojiao Lighthouse, Daxi Fishing Port, Starbucks Fulong Sea Viewing Store, etc. are all worth visiting.  This trip to the Old Caoling Tunnel not only allowed us to experience the fun of cycling, but also gave us a deeper understanding of this historic tunnel. In the tunnel, we felt the years and stories of the past, as if we were traveling through a time tunnel.
