Yishang Street

5.6
4.4/5
207 reviews
Yishang Street is one of the two major historical and cultural blocks in Huzhou, consisting of three parts:Yishang Street, Guanyihetou, and Hongmenguan. The history of the block dates back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty: in the Song Dynasty, it was called Zhouzhi Main Street, Zhouzhi Front Street, and Market Street; in the Ming Dynasty, it was renamed Fuqian Street and Xiaoshi Street, serving as the essential route from the Huzhou prefectural government to the post house. By the mid-Qing Dynasty, it had become the main commercial district of Huzhou, lined with second-hand clothing stores, dowry shops, silver shops, and traditional Chinese medicine pharmacies. The pawnshops and money shops around Jiuqu Alley supported the financial center of Huzhou at that time, and the street's name originated from the many second-hand clothing stores that once gathered there. After the Northern Expedition, the second-hand clothing stores gradually faded away, but the old street has always remained a bustling commercial area in Huzhou. Today, the block retains the architectural texture of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, with river wharves, docks, and traditional alleys interspersed throughout. Every few steps, you can encounter traces of old Huzhou life. Places worth slowing down to explore include the Guanyihetou area, which was once where officials arriving in Huzhou by boat would dock and stay. The former site of the Shexi Hall has now been converted into the Huzhou Ancient Virtuous Officials Memorial Hall; the Zhou Residence at Dabaidukou is the memorial hall for the late Qing Dynasty jurist Shen Jiaben; the Hongmenguan area was historically related to students taking imperial examinations, and the former site of the Wuxing Telephone Company is still preserved in front of the hall, marking where Huzhou's telephone business began a century ago. For tourists, this old street of about 300 m is more like a concentration of Huzhou's local life: signature snacks, teahouses, and creative shops sit side-by-side in old houses, and many traditional Huzhou flavors can be found on the street. The block brings together many representative intangible cultural heritage projects, such as sugar painting, theZhenyuantong TeaSanzhen making technique, and the Zhou Shengji wonton making technique. Cultural venues like the Shexi Hall and the Shenjiaben Memorial Hall regularly host intangible cultural heritage-themed exhibitions and interactive experience activities, and the ancient stage often features opera performances. At night, when the lights in the alleys come on and the stone paths reflect the warm glow, the old street takes on a different charm.Huzhou · 25.7 km from Changxing

West Lake

4.7/5

West Lake is undoubtedly the epitome of Hangzhou's beauty. The famous "Ten scenes of West Lake" surround its shores, where nature and culture complement each other, forming the core area of Hangzhou tourism. You don't need to visit every attraction - instead, spend half a day or a full day strolling along the lake. However you choose to enjoy it, the experience will surely lift your spirits. West Lake is the core attraction of Hangzhou, surrounded by clouds and mountains on three sides and the city on one side. The Su Causeway and Bai Causeway stretch across the lake, dividing it into several water areas. The lakeside scenery is highlighted by the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" from the Southern Song Dynasty, along with the later "New Ten Scenes" and "Three Additional Scenes," featuring over a hundred attractions along the shore and mountains. Pavilions, temples, pagodas, gardens, causeways, and islands complement the distant mountains and nearby waters, while legends like the Broken Bridge where Lady White Snake met Xu Xian add a layer of storytelling to the landscape. West Lake extends east from Songmuchang in Hangzhou and the north of Baolu Road turning to Shaoniangong Square, passing Baisha Road, Huancheng West Road, Hubin Road, and Nanshan Road to the south of Wansong Ridge, covering all attractions including Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain. To the south, it stretches from Gulou along the eastern foothills of Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain, passing Fengshanmen and Fenghuangshan Road, then following the West Lake water diversion channel to the north bank of the Qiantang River, turning to the Coral Sand Reservoir and ending north of Liufangling. To the west, it runs from Liufangling, Zhugan Mountain, Jiuqu Ridge, and Mingren Ridge to Meiren Peak, Beigaofeng, Lingfeng Mountain, and east of the ridge line of Laohe Mountain. To the north, it follows the foothills of Laohe Mountain (west wall of Zhejiang University), turns 30 m north of Qingzhiwu Road, connects to Yugu Road, Zhejiang University Road, and Shuguang Road, ending south of Songmuchang. West Lake has over 100 attractions, renowned for its "Ten scenes of West Lake", "New ten scenes of West Lake" and "Three reviews · Ten scenes of West Lake". West Lake overview You can explore West Lake on foot, by cruise, on electric bikes, via self-drive, or by riding. Among these, electric bikes are the most convenient and effortless option, with hop-on-hop-off sightseeing vehicles circling the entire lake. Riding along the lakeshore is romantic and leisurely, with many public bike rental spots available. For a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks around the lake offering various vessels and routes. We highly recommend taking a cruise to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon at the lake center while enjoying the scenic views. Alternatively, you can hail a hand-rowed boat for a more flexible experience with a boatman guiding your tour. North line scenery The north shore of West Lake gathers quite a few attractions, usually starting from the remnant snow on broken bridge at the northeast corner and heading west all the way to Yuewang Temple. You can walk along Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, visiting cultural attractions like Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Chinese Seal Art Museum, and Zhongshan Park's Crane Pavilion. Enjoy authentic West Lake vinegar fish at Louwailou Restaurant, then cross Xiling Bridge to leave the island - Yuewang Temple and Breeze-ruffled lotus at Quyuan Garden are just a short distance away. If it's a summer day with strong sunlight, it is recommended to stroll along Beishan road, hiding under the dense shade of trees to admire the curve of Broken bridge and the swaying weeping willows on Bai causeway opposite. There are many entrances along the way leading to Precious stone hill, where you can hike for views, and descend to reach Yuewang temple. Yuewang square has many small shops for snacks, and the Impression West Lake show here in the evening is also worth watching. If you have ample time and energy, you can also head to Su causeway from here for a walk to enjoy the panoramic view of West Lake. Southeast coast (Lakeside-Nanshan Road) Another area with a concentration of attractions is the Hubin Road-Nanshan Road along the southeastern coast. Hubin Road is located at the junction between Hangzhou's urban area and the attraction, offering views of West Lake, a dock for West Lake cruises, and the iconic music fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is its quick access from the attraction to the downtown business district, making it suitable for travelers with a tight itinerary to make a short stop. Head south from Hubin road and walk along Nanshan road, where you can visit attractions like Orioles singing in the willows, Long bridge, Leifeng pagoda, Evening bell at Nanping hill, and Viewing fish at flower harbor. The distance between adjacent attractions is not far, so you can walk or take a sightseeing bus or public transport, which are also convenient. You can arrange a day to visit a few of them according to your preference. Among them, Leifeng pagoda and Evening bell at Nanping hill can be visited in the evening. Listening to the bell at Jingci temple and overlooking the night view of West lake from Leifeng pagoda are both great experiences.Hangzhou · 91.6 km from Changxing

Taihu Lake

4.6/5
188 reviews
Taihu Lake is one of China's five largest freshwater lakes, spanning Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. It borders Wuxi and Changzhou to the north and Huzhou to the south, with the majority of its waters and shoreline located within Suzhou. In ancient times, it was also known by other names such as Wuhu and Lize. The lake is vast, with a water surface area of over 2,000 square kilometers. Dozens of islands are scattered throughout the lake, and together with the peaks of the peninsulas along the shore, they were historically referred to as the "72 Peaks." Mountains beyond mountains and lakes within lakes define the character of this body of water. The attractions on the Suzhou side are quite multi-faceted: Dongting East Mountain is a peninsula extending into the lake, where Luxiang Ancient Village preserves clusters of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, and the painted arhat statues at Zijin Nunnery possess a unique, ancient charm. West Mountain Island, which faces the peninsula across the lake, is accessible via Taihu Bridge. The bridge starts from Yuyang Mountain and connects across Changsha Island and Yeshan Island; driving across the lake feels like entering a painting. On the island, Shigong Mountain and Linwu Cave are known for their strange rocks and secluded caves. The Guangfu area has been planted with plum trees since ancient times, and when they bloom in early spring, the mountains are covered in white, giving rise to the name "Fragrant Snow Sea," which has been passed down to this day. The East and West Dongting Mountains are also the production area for Biluochun, one of China's top ten famous teas. Lake delicacies are also an essential part of Taihu Lake: whitefish, silverfish, and white shrimp are collectively known as the "Taihu Lake Three Whites." They are fresh as soon as they are caught, and the emphasis is on cooking them immediately after being caught; the boat cuisine by the lake is all about this freshness. After the arrival of fall, Taihu Lake crabs are also the seasonal stars on lakeside dining tables. If you have time, take a self-drive tour or go cycling along the lakeside road, where fishing ports, wetlands, and ancient villages are connected along the way. The light and shadows on the lake at dawn and dusk are especially worth stopping for.Suzhou · 32.1 km from Changxing

The ticket office at Xiamu Lake Scenic Area is a bit of a walk from the parking lot. Ticket prices increased for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, but a drink was included. After buying your ticket, you still have to walk a distance to reach the scenic area. Along the way, you'll cross a small glass bridge. There are many non-motorized play equipment for children. There's also a small purple sand beach where you can dig in the sand. Arriving at Xiamu Lake is a breathtaking experience! The scenery is stunning! There are also some man-made flower arrangements, perfect for taking photos.

It has a long history and is worth a visit. You can go up to the fifth floor of the Duobao Pagoda for a view. The whole journey is upstairs, and the view is spectacular. The Dabei Temple behind it feels like the Weiyang Palace in Hengdian Film and Television City.

Yiyuan Garden is a long-established private garden in Nanxun, with an exquisite layout, a wide lake, and winding pavilions and corridors. It's much less crowded than Xiaolianzhuang Garden, making it quiet and comfortable. Lush greenery and schools of koi carp make it perfect for a leisurely stroll and taking photos, allowing you to experience the elegance of a Jiangnan garden. Online tickets offer direct entry and are good value. It's a good place to rest after exploring the main street of the ancient town.

My second visit to West Lake was great; the boat tour was excellent. The dock was easy to find, the staff were very friendly, provided clear explanations, and helped with any issues. There were also sightseeing buses, which were nice but a bit pricey. Taking the boat tour and then walking around was both perfectly fine.

Here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the magnificent scenery of Taihu Lake and feel the magical charm of nature. Whether it's the sunrise or the starry night, you'll experience an ultimate visual feast. The "Baiyelong Bridge" nearby is particularly easy to overlook; walking up to it might be even better than the viewing platform.

The environment is so-so, but it's quite fun. Han Meilin's design, in particular, is very trendy and interesting. The history museum teaches you about the development history and knowledge of Yixing ceramics, and introduces some famous figures. While ceramics aren't as popular now, some of their names still ring a bell, like Gu Jingzhou. Tickets are only 5 yuan, and parking is free, so it's definitely worth a visit.

The scenery is pleasant. It is suitable for family outings. There are many varieties of plum blossoms. Most of them are aunts taking pictures. The Ancient Forest Museum is worth a visit. According to legend, more than 4,000 years ago, Xia Yu, the founder of China's flood control, was ordered by Emperor Shun Yao Chonghua to control floods in Taihu Lake. He dug three main waterways, Dongjiang River, Loujiang River and Wusong River, connecting Taihu Lake with the sea and diverting floodwaters into the sea. This is what Sima Qian recorded in "Records of the Grand Historian": "Yu controlled floods in Wu and connected three rivers and five lakes." Taihu Lake is vast, 200 miles from east to west and 120 miles from north to south, covering an area of 36,000 hectares.
