🌋 Have you ever imagined what life in a city with a volcano standing majestically nearby would be like? 😍 Some places feature homes nestled among lush green mountains, some offer views of smoking volcanic peaks, and others boast natural hot springs powered by geothermal energy. 🏘️ 1. Arequipa, Peru 🇵🇪 A white city built from volcanic stone, with the Misti volcano towering in the background, blending ancient architecture with breathtaking mountain views. 🌋 2. Catania, Italy 🇮🇹 A coastal city on the island of Sicily located near Mount Etna, one of Europe's most active volcanoes. Here, you'll find ancient architecture, Italian cuisine, and a lava-sculpted landscape that has shaped the way of life for centuries. 🏡 3. Hilo, Hawaii, USA 🇺🇸 A Pacific oceanfront city on the island of Hawaii, surrounded by rainforests, waterfalls, and volcanic terrain. The island is home to the Kilauea volcano, which erupts periodically, making the nature here both beautiful and constantly evolving. ♨️ 4. Aso, Japan 🇯🇵 The urban areas and communities around Mount Aso feature vast grasslands, volcanic craters, and views of a massive caldera. It is a perfect destination for lovers of nature and unique landscapes. 🌿 5. Antigua, Guatemala 🇬🇹 A historic town with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and surrounding volcanoes such as Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango, making the city views exceptionally striking. At times, the activity of the Fuego volcano can be seen from a distance. ✨ The charm of volcanic towns isn't just about the beautiful views, but also the stories of geology, culture, food, and a lifestyle that grows alongside nature. However, each volcano has different risk levels; always check for safety warnings and area restrictions before traveling.

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.
