Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture is one of Kyushu's most breathtaking and spectacular driving destinations, featuring world-class caldera landscapes and sprawling grasslands. 🌋 ⚠️ Important Update (October 2026): The volcano is currently at Alert Level 2, meaning entry within a 1km radius of the crater is prohibited. Consequently, the access route to the Nakadake crater is temporarily closed. However, all major highlights in the surrounding area—including Daikanbo and Kusasenri—remain open, and you can still enjoy the stunning scenery by car as usual. 🚗✨ 🗺️ 1-Day Road Trip Itinerary Around Mount Aso 📍 Daikanbo Lookout: This is the highest 360-degree panoramic viewpoint, offering a look at the five peaks of Mount Aso, which resemble a reclining Buddha. The drive along the romantic "Milk Road" offers mesmerizing views on both sides of the path. 🌾 📍 Komezuka: A small, inverted cone-shaped volcanic hill with a distinct depression at the top, resembling a teacup. It is covered in lush green grass, creating a charming and unique sight (visible from a distance only). 🍵 📍 Kusasenrigahama: A vast savanna-like prairie set within a giant volcanic crater. It features large ponds and wild horses grazing freely. In October, the fields begin to turn a brilliant golden hue. Horseback riding tours are also available. 🐎 📍 Aso Volcano Museum: Located right next to the Kusasenri prairie, this museum showcases the history and formation of the volcano. It also features live monitors broadcasting real-time footage of the Nakadake crater. 📹 💡 Travel Tips 🔍 Check Weather and Gas Levels: It is highly recommended to check the official Aso Volcano warning website daily. If toxic gas levels are high, further access restrictions may be put in place. 💨 🧥 Bring a Windbreaker: The mountain summit is very windy, and temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. Be sure to bring a jacket.

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.
