If you are planning a New Year trip to Kyushu, taking the train from Kumamoto to Aso Station on January 2nd is an incredible scenic adventure! · 🎫 Seat Reservation Trick: While you can board with unreserved cars, reserving a seat online in advance costs a small fee (around 400–500 Yen per seat). During the busy New Year holiday period, trains might not always be completely sold out, but reserving ahead is highly recommended if you want peace of mind and guaranteed seating!(do it online via JR website) · 🚆 JR Pass Benefit: If you are using the JR Kyushu Rail Pass (North Kyushu Area), it covers your base fare and standard ticket costs. You just need to pay the small seat reservation fee if you choose to book specific reserved seats in advance via the JR Kyushu online reservation system or at a ticket machine/counter. · 🛤️ The Route from Kumamoto to Aso: The journey takes you from Kumamoto into the breathtaking volcanic heart of Kumamoto Prefecture. As you approach, keep your camera ready for stunning views of the outer rim of the massive Mount Aso caldera and rolling countryside. · 🌋 About the Aso Trains: Depending on the specific train service you book (such as the popular limited express trains like the Kyushu Crossing Bus connections or scenic diesel railcars), you'll experience comfortable, beautifully styled regional trains designed to showcase the natural beauty of the region. #asotrain #mountaso #kyushutravel #japanrailpass #newyeartravel #tripmoments

🌄 Epic Scenic Drive to Mount Aso: Nature’s Movie Screen on Wheels 🚗🌿
Kick back and let Japan’s countryside charm you on a self-driving road trip from Kumamoto to Mount Aso! Rolling green fields, distant misty hills, and wide-open skies make this drive a living landscape painting. It’s the perfect way to soak up rural Japan at its most picturesque—even if Mount Aso’s crater is closed due to volcanic activity, the journey itself is an unforgettable highlight.

🗺️ Recommended Route & Experience:
Cruise the Yamanami Highway (Route 11) for sweeping panoramic views—take it slow, windows down, and savor the cool, breezy air, especially from April to May when the weather is just right (not too hot, not too cold). You’ll pass lush grasslands, wetlands, and scattered forests—keep an eye out for grazing horses and those endless rolling meadows!

📷 Insta-worthy Photo Spots:
Pause at Daikanbo for the iconic overlook where Aso’s caldera and patchwork farmland stretch to the horizon. On a sunny day, catch dramatic clouds over the caldera rim; on rainy/overcast days, the mists add a mysterious, ethereal vibe to your shots.

💡 Visiting Tips:
· Address: Takawara, Aso, Kumamoto 869-2223, Japan
· Opening Hours: Mar 20–Oct 31: 08:30–18:00; Nov: 08:30–17:30; Dec–Mar 19: 09:00–17:00
· Check Mount Aso’s live status before visiting, as the crater area may close due to volcanic activity.
· Weekdays or early mornings mean fewer crowds and quieter roads.
· Bring layers—mountain weather changes fast, and it can get chilly even in spring.

⚠️ Precautions:
· Roads can be foggy/rainy, so drive cautiously.
· If the crater is closed, enjoy the journey and landscapes—there’s plenty to experience from the road!

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.
