When visiting Kyushu, don't just stick to downtown Fukuoka! If you have enough time, consider adding volcanic landscapes, hot spring towns, mountain canyons, and Nagasaki's night views to your itinerary. We've compiled 9 must-visit attractions in Kyushu. If it's your first time here, you can choose a route based on your travel duration and interests. 9 recommended attractions in Kyushu 1️⃣ Mount Aso | Kumamoto Prefecture One of Kyushu's iconic natural landscapes, where you can experience the grandeur of volcanic terrain. Nearby attractions like Kusasenri are perfect for nature lovers. Please check official daily updates to see if the crater is open. 2️⃣ Kumamon Square | Kumamoto Prefecture One of the official activity hubs for Kumamon, where you can browse merchandise and take photos. If you want to see a live Kumamon performance, please confirm the daily schedule and operating hours in advance. 3️⃣ Takachiho Gorge | Miyazaki Prefecture Famous for its canyons, columnar rock formations, and Manai Falls. When weather and operating conditions permit, you can experience boating in the gorge. It is recommended to check reservation availability in advance. 4️⃣ Yufuin Onsen | Oita Prefecture A perfect stop for a slow-paced trip! You can stroll through the Yufuin hot spring town, take a walk around Lake Kinrin, and explore the many specialty dessert shops and souvenir stores along the way. 5️⃣ Mount Inasa night view | Nagasaki Prefecture One of the most iconic night view spots in Nagasaki. Head to the observation deck around dusk to enjoy views of Nagasaki Port and the city lights. Visibility depends on the weather. 6️⃣ Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine | Fukuoka Prefecture Famous for enshrining the god of learning. It's a great place for worship, strolling, and enjoying food along the approach. You can combine this with a half-day trip in downtown Fukuoka. 7️⃣ Huis Ten Bosch | Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture Known for its Dutch-style streetscapes, seasonal flowers, and light displays, this theme park is perfect for families, couples, and friends. The park is large, so we recommend setting aside plenty of time to explore. 8️⃣ Kurokawa Onsen | Kumamoto Prefecture A traditional Japanese hot spring town surrounded by mountains and forests, perfect for experiencing open-air baths and strolling through the town. If you plan to bathe, we recommend checking the reception hours and bathing policies of each ryokan in advance. 9️⃣ Kokonoe "Dream" Grand Suspension Bridge | Oita Prefecture Enjoy views of valleys, forests, and waterfalls from high above—perfect for nature lovers. Opening status may change during strong winds or severe weather. 🚗 How to plan a well-balanced Kyushu itinerary? ✔️ Around Fukuoka: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine + downtown Fukuoka, suitable for short trips. ✔️ Kumamoto and surroundings: Kumamon Square + Mount Aso, plan based on opening status and actual travel time. ✔️ Oita hot spring scenic route: Yufuin Onsen + Kokonoe "Dream" Grand Suspension Bridge, suitable for travelers who love hot springs and natural scenery. ✔️ Nagasaki direction: Mount Inasa night view + Huis Ten Bosch, we recommend planning separately based on your accommodation location and time spent at the park. ✔️ Takachiho direction: Takachiho Gorge is far from other popular city attractions, so we recommend planning it separately or designing your itinerary to include surrounding areas. The above are planning ideas based on geographical regions, not fixed one-day tour routes. Attractions in Kyushu are widely distributed, so specific arrangements should also consider your departure city, accommodation location, and travel duration. 🚐 Kyushu private car charter service | Make your trip more flexible If you are traveling in a larger group, or wish to visit places where public transportation is less convenient, such as Aso, Takachiho, or Kurokawa Onsen, you can also inquire about our private car charter service. We can discuss routes and vehicle types based on the number of travelers, dates, pickup locations, and desired attractions. Final quotes are subject to actual itinerary confirmation.

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.
